    Regarding 4:55: It's wonderful to see someone remember that parts, in particular potentiometers, have tolerances. If two instances of the same circuit sound different, it may be that you need to dial in one to sound like the other; setting the pots to the same physical position is insufficient. In that sense two original Klons will sound as different as the difference between an original Klon and a Klone. So it was refreshing to see you try dialing things in at 5:15.

    I ordered a Klon KTR in January 2021 and got a delivery message yesterday! It will arrive on Saturday ... provided I will have 395 Euros ready at my doorstep to pay for it ;-) After owning three original Centaurs, I'm glad I will have another pedal from the source itself. There are a lot of great sounding Clones and the RYRA is one of the best ... but in my view, the KTR is still a real Klon, even if it's made differently.

  • @SamI124QRiley
    @SamI124QRiley ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Another thing to bear in mind if you're hearing a difference is how you've got the pedals chained together - The RYRA's buffer going into the KTR or the KTR's buffer coming after the RYRA could skew your perception as they will react different.

    Good demo! Both of these are great. I’ve tried both and I’ve gotta say in a band situation the way the KTR tucks in the low end and it’s specific eq curve in the midrange gives it a big edge on the RYRA. The KTR also has a smoother breakup throughout its gain range. RYRA is a great pedal regardless! Just feels like when I’ve gigged both the KTR was really really designed for someone to be playing/sitting in the mix. So far haven’t found a copy that’s nailed it to the same level of detail! Shame it’s gone into silly money second hand. No overdrive pedal is worth over £500…

    The Klon or Klones of, are often used for always on pedals to sweeten/clean boost. They hit the first tube, or preamp stage nicely. So it would be interesting to do the same demo with a high end tube amp. None of my gain pedals sounds exactly the same into my fractal, vs tube amp. 2¢

    I ordered a Klon KTR in february 2021, so that's almost two years ago now. I already had a Klon klone and I really liked the sound and for the first time in decades (literally) I didn't really know what to do with my money and I decided to go for the KTR. €395,- I'm fine with it. It's okay. But I still don't have it. They told me a couple of months ago they were expecting them in october, last month. Two weeks back I received a letter (Thomann) in which they asked me if I wanted to stay on the list, because it could take another 2 years and then they would get only 10 KTRs for the whole of Europe!!!
    I decided to stay on that waiting list. But by now I don't even really care about the KTR anymore. I just can't stand the idea of me already waiting for almost 2 years for nothing. To be honest, I don't know what I'd do when I finally get it. I'll probably try it and if I like it I might keep it. But I have so many gain pedals and I'm completely satisfied with the tones I have, so I don't NEED a Klon. This means that I might as well sell it for a ridiculous amount of money.
    If I really wanted that Klon sound now, I would be perfectly happy with the Ryra, a Wampler Tumnus Mini, a J.Rocket Archer, or even an EHX Soulfood (the Soulfood sounds great, nothing wrong with it!).
    It just feels weird to wait so long for a pedal that I know I don't need and I might not even keep it.

    • @rjo8500
      @rjo8500 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Tumnus mini is voiced with more low end which works great with a Strat. I love one. But splitting hairs the voice of the Klon is not of bass but of cutting high mids. Don’t know why Brian Wampler went that way but it seems to be favored by many so..

  • @Lantertronics
    @Lantertronics ปีที่แล้ว

    I think to really dig into this, one would have to get a couple of Klons and a couple of Klones, to figure out if there's really a difference between the sound of the Klon and the Klone, or if you're hearing a level of difference that would also be present between two Klons and two Klones, just from part tolerances. Bill Finnegan wasn't making his own parts and he wasn't casting magic spells while making them.

  • @fraenkiboii
    @fraenkiboii ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Funny, I had a Klone phase a couple of years back and the one I kept was the RYRA, which is still on my board. I modded it by replacing the diodes to D9Es which have a lower forward voltage than the stock ones. Improved it a little. But it’s funny how pedals play with our psyche isn’t it? We all know we could achieve lots of the sounds with a Boss GE7 and yet that’s not very sexy, psychologically.

    I did an analysis of the frequencies on a Mosky Silver Horse & Tumnus & they are so close you aren't going to tell the difference. People hear with their eyes. I just had someone tell me you can't hear component tolerance difference on my FF build & the topper is there is 10% difference on the resistors. So in short people will always assume the OG stuff is the better hence adding to the rise in cost because of ignorance. With an eq on your board you can easily tweak any sound.

The KTR sounds great in any case. Love that RYRA Klone, though. Definitely has the magic.

    thank you so much for turning me onto the idea of having it on the board as a pure clean boost. i was always running my klon clone on a higher gain setting to have the "magic diodes" engaged. i liked the sound of that as well. but running it with the gain off does something really nice to a single coil guitar. awesome!

    worth noting, while bill finnegan swears the KTR is close enough to the OG clone that you shouldn't be able to notice much of a difference, having owned both they definitely felt different to me. I've tried a number of clones that felt closer to the original klon to me than the KTR did. Not really that shocked that the other klon clone you bought was doing it for you more than the KTR.

  • @Utube-g3g

    As a pedal addict but almost reformed. Just about have it under control, the klon pedal has never interested me for some reason. However, I have the tumnus on one side of the Wampler gearbox and I do like it. But I have some overdrives I put the gain down and volume up and sculpt the amp’s distortion into what I think is a better sound. One is the LPD 68 deluxe. I rarely use it alone but as I said into the amp’s distortion it’s perfect. Great playing as always Paul.

    I have the Boss OD-200, which has a Klon clone built-in, I figured this single pedal will cover a lot of sounds when paired with my Katana 100, I use the GAFC and the Airstep, I still need a few more pedals, something with a lot of spacy effects would be best. Single-effect pedals seem a little outdated, I do like the simplicity of a big stack of pedals but condensing them down makes a lot of sense too, so many choices it gets a bit mind-boggling, especially when every new pedal gets rave reviews.

Thanks for this Paul, great demo as usual, I'll be weighing up the two then buying one, just bought a Marshall DSL 40CR which is nice for the price but could do with a nice touch of crispness in an overdrive, as I think it's a bit wooley, could be me though as i've just got it, but the clean sound nice for an edge of break-up so one of these pedals I hope will achieve that.

    Well done! Nice, straightforward demo. Even with what sounds like a reverb-enriched sound, the nature of each of these effects shows through. IMO, the quality of both far outweighs the minor differences, most of which can be dealt with by using the guitar, and if necessary the amp, tone controls. Players who really obsess about the differences between these two boxes, or other klones are, I think, getting too far into the weeds. Do you really "need" one rather than the other? I had an original gold horsie Klon that I bought for $400 and sold for $5K to one of the most respected guitarists in the U S of A. I used some of that money to get a first run KTR (for about $150, if I recall correctly) which I eventually sold for $600 when I bought my present klone, the Rimrock Effects Mythical Overdrive (I considered the Ryra, too, but just hate the enclosure art!). Point is: I could perceive slight differences at every step of this series of pedals, but none was genuinely impactful or unable to be adjusted. Personally, I wish Bill Finnegan, whose research and prototyping and testing yielded this circuit, ought to get $10 for every klon-type pedal sold. What an impact! Anbd thanks for this video.

    5 yrs ago I read about the Meat and 3 modded Soul Food and how close to a Klon. Found 1 someone did at home and was selling used. Got it for $83 and couldn't be happier. Heard a TH-cam test of a JHS model against the Klon can pretty much hear mine in it. 1 of 3 modded drives on my board. The other 2 are a Alchemy modded BD-2 and a bias knob modded older 3 knob Tube driver that I run at 18v and use a 12av7 tube. Together these have a lot of diversity and sound.

      When I was an '80s teenager I had something similar to a Tube Driver. Dean Markely Overlord. It was black with red fonts. I thought the valve in it would make the Crate solid state amp sound better. I can't remember if it did or not. I do remember it needed to be plugged into the wall though. I now know that means the ECC83 valve ran on the proper voltages, unlike all the stuff that had what they call a 'marketing tube' in it. That means it was probably a serious piece of gear I guess.
      In those days I went to gigs in Auckland where most players used a Marshall half stack. Loud was allowed back then. Going back home to my solid state amp was not nice. Then I got a made in NZ valve amp called a Holden that ran a pair of KT88s (the amps AC/DC began on). I had a Fane Medusa speaker for it but no cab for the speaker lol. Imports were super expensive, so Kiwi kids made do with whatever we could get. It was decent enough until I destroyed it in a fit of teenage rage when it developed a fault. Duh me huh.
      Even more duh was when I was 16. I traded the first guitar I bought with my own money. A 1955 Gibson Southern Jumbo. $1100 NZD I paid. I walked out with a crappy Cort electric, a Boss HM-2, and a NZ made solid state amp. I though I had done well getting all that new stuff for an old guitar. Super duh. I have a few more brains these days -- hopefully. :D

    Would be interesting to hear a comparison between the Ryra and the StewMac Ghost drive. I think most of the hype about some pedals is just hype. In a mix.....you would be hard pressed to hear the difference between many of them. For those who watch the JHS show would know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they tend to point out that even many of the least expensive pedals offer greats sounds. I for one am a big fan of the Plumes.
    FYI, I think this was a great video but would benefit from an AB switch when comparing pedals as you can then hear the 2 closer together without the delay.

    Hi Paul..i know its a pedal vid, but re your strat...is it a custom shop ? & if so, how do you think it squares up to the Ultra models, and do you think it is worth the £outlay?
    Thanks ..great vid as per!

    • @TheStudioRats

      The Ultras a great, although I’m not a fan of noiseless pickups and I like relic guitars. For that reason I choose custom shop. Personally I do think it’s worth the extra outlay.

  • @FGg503

    I'd be happy with the Ryra. Potato potaato - the difference in tone is negligible and not worth the massive hike in the price of the KTR, never mind the original Klon.

    I’m waiting for another new guitar day Paul. It makes my day. 😉 ps I can’t help but think only guitarists hear these differences. When I ask a non guitarist can u hear the difference?! No is their typical answer. We have special ears 👂.

    Just because the KTR is made by bill Finnegan the same person who made the original Klon doesn't make it the original Klon it's still a clone because the diodes and the breadboard and the circuits are different.

    Back in the day I had a JHS Klone and I regret selling it. I also had an early Archer (Jeff) and I liked that one too. Currently I have the original Tumnus and although it’s voiced different, especially compared to the JHS, I like it and use it as a solo boost.

    I dig the channel, and agree with most of your conclusions, but not this one.
    I don't use my KTR as a clean boost, and if that's what you're using it for, there are better preamps. Once you engage the gain, even if you can match "A single tone" from it (my timnus can easily), you'll have a hard time matching its dynamic response across a range. The response doesn't change properly with fret position, or the force the string being struck.
    Its the same thing with Modelers vs Tube Amps, or a tube amp not turned passed "1": it just doesn't breath right. There's a missing harmonic richness to it.
    Is it "close enough" for most of us? ...Probably, but it's not the same.

    Thanks for the great video!
    Appears to be 2 George L cables in and out of the KTR? One George L in and a Neutrik out of the Ryra?
    Cables do introduce an audible difference in tone.
    My George L's have more high end than other cables I own. I wonder if this accounts for the somewhat darker tone of the Ryra?
    Just a thought.

    So glad I never bought into all the Klon hype. It just sounds like a tube screamer with the mids hump in a different frequency range (just watch the Shnobel comparison video: Klon vs vintage tube screamer), and I do not like mids hump overdrives.

    Had a silver klon for about 5 yrs. Liked it but didn’t always have it on the board. Got a proanalog manticore v2 after seeing it a/b’d with the klon on TPS. Manticore needs dialling in but is close enough for me and is more versatile imo.
    Couldn’t justify keeping the klon after that and that was when they were changing hands for 1k. Now 5k?!! Madness

      @@TheStudioRats "Klon'ed out" - great! Not that I have ever had the chance to play an original Klon. But what I'ved heard and read is that there were sound differences between the silver and the gold versions of the pedal. Maybe the KTR tends more to the silver version and the Ryra to the gold one.
