Fortunately, I don't have to imagine. Byrd's primary residence was in Maryland and when I was stationed there, Ft. Meade, in the early seventies, the service club had Byrd and his trio there at least once a year, usually performing to a small audience of dedicated Byrd fans. Byrd was always polite, humble, and gracious, and delivered his usual amazing performance. I couldn't believe, at the time, just how fortunate I was to be able to witness his amazing talent, in such an intimate setting, and all for free. I love Charlie Byrd -- heckuva talent and heckuva guy.
Long ago, I got to see him play live at the Hong Kong Bar in the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. As I was standing in the entry queue, I could hear him begin playing "Corcovado" - one of my favorites. I just melted. The drummer was Bill Reichenbach, who was the drummer for Charlie Byrd from 1962 to 1973, and he had added a flautist - Mario Darpino. That night, Reichenbach suddenly started fooling around, and after the tune, Charlie turned to look at him as if to ask "WTF?" Reichenbach pointed to the first row of tables, and there was Buddy Rich.
I picked up on this recently. It is so beautiful that i listen to it over and over again and cry. Charlie Byrd is beautiful playing with his heart wave. What a nice sounding guitar, great trio.

While Charlie played Wave's melody, mmmmm.... good, really very good, but at the "guitar solo".....that remember to me to Santana in Woodstock. Anyway, nice performance
I don’t know the exact story behind it, but I believe he did one album with an electric. Went back to classical. that one album is rare! i wonder about the reasoning for trying and then staying with nylon.

I grew up in Annapolis MD and Charlie Byrd would play in the cellar of the King of France. Very small venue, maybe 30 people tops.

Samba & Bossa-nova guitarists usually use classical guitar.

During Mr. Byrds solo it sounds like the bassist is trying to solo on top of him. The tempo loses that "bossa" rythym .
