"Umntwana Ongaphakathi" ('The Child Inside') immerses us in Khumbula's poignant journey of self-discovery and healing. The film explores the tumultuous relationship between Khumbula and his inner child, set within a derelict home and a murky tavern. Reflecting a psychotherapeutic exercise, the narrative emerges from Bongeziwe's haunting track "soze" from his album "amaXesha." Love transcends time, leading to an introspective exploration of self-love. Khumbula grapples with his past, facing self-destruction, while his inner child remains a constant presence. Through emotional mirroring, their conflict and reconciliation take us through their darkest recesses, culminating in a cathartic confrontation and a path to healing, guided by maternal love. This universally resonating narrative speaks to reconciling with the past and seeking redemption. The film's creation involved personal introspection and technical finesse, and Bongeziwe Mabandla's versatility shines as the lead. "Umntwana Ongaphakathi" is an artistic manifestation of finding beauty within darkness, inviting audiences on a deeply personal introspective journey.

Bongeziwe, again you bring me to tears. you, your music, your transmission are so powerful. there was a study done by the brother of Borat, you know Sacha Baron Cohen. a psychologist at Cambridge University. The research showed that especially empathic people engage with music with the socialising part of their brain, i.e. the music itself is like engaging with a person. maybe we're actually all like that. but, i mean to say, your music touches deeply, even if i don't understand all the words. what someone else said, the expression of our pain. and now, I mean, the pain of our nation. and i realise, being privileged, I don't understand it. but i feel that I can feel it a little, witness it a little. and i so deeply wish to be a part of the healing of land and people. your music inspires this witnessing, this healing on the inside and the desire for healing for all of us. thank you for your voice. your spirit. your journey for everything you're giving to all of us.
