      While you are probably correct, the "fall" added to things the pitcher has to consider and he becomes so fixated on that run that just scored that he totally forgot about the 'Fallen runner.' It all just adds to the factors and distractions he has to deal with resulting in a run and a second stolen base. He might even be blaming himself for allowing the fallen runner to enable the steal and that too keeps him from considering that 'fallen' runner. Data overload plain and simple.

    This is one reason I've been watching more college ball lately. There are so many unpredictable plays. Image something like this happening in the MLB. It's hard. They're set in "the way the game is played". This is such a creative play. The offensive coach knows that even if the fielders communicate "something is wrong", they won't be able to effectively communicate WHAT is going wrong. So naturally the lefty will notice the runner on first. When the pitcher steps off, his attention is the "bad" base running on first. Meanwhile, they triggered the third base runner's steal of home at the exact same time.
    This is creative coaching at its finest. When people say baseball is a primarily a mental game, THIS is what they mean. Thanks for the focus on college games this year, Matt.

  • @joireland

    I saw this run by University of Florida about 5 years ago. It's an awesome play that requires a lefty pitcher and some good timing. The runner on 3rd cannot leave too soon and should only leave when (or just before) the runner on 1st falls. It also buys more time if the runner on 1st stumbles 2 steps to prolong his fall (to distract so that the runner on 3rd can sneak down the baseline further and then sprint home). Also the batter must know, read the sign and confirm to the 3rd base coach so he doesn't attempt to swing (and possibly hurt the base runner badly). If the batter is right handed he should understand he has the right to be in the batters box since it is a pitch as far as the batter was concerned (just don't move your legs and you won't get an interference call ... in fact I've seen a slide between the batters legs before).

    This is a really clever play, and it only works with this exact base setup and a left handed pitcher. Further, it only makes sense to try when you really need a run, there's already two outs, and the pitcher is confident because he's ahead in the count. The cleverness is only enhanced by the fact that any yelling at the pitcher about what's happening will only further confuse him because, in that split second, he'll think they're yelling about the guy that fell down.

    Yea I pitched from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played travel baseball for coaches that played college or pro. But I also threw left handed and as a left handed thrower it's difficult to pay attention to that runner at third because you can't see the runner at third. So you have to rely on your defense to help you out and our coaches would always preach communication. So as a defense you have to pay attention to the runners on how aggressive that they are on the bases. It depends on the score as well but if your deliberate just like this pitcher was well the runners will pick up on that and take advantage of the situation. Somebody has to be yelling to step off but the runners picked up on how deliberate he was to the plate. So it was smart base running by Kentucky

    As a left handed pitcher myself that was a good distraction. However the number one thing you do when a runner leaves early is step off and immediately check the lead runner.

    Very interesting - and can only work with a left handed pitcher!

    Makes you wonder if the batter wasn't also in on the plan -- like trying to stand in just the right spot so he obstructs the catcher's view of the 3rd base line.

    Pitcher did not seem distracted by the runner on 1st at all. Pitcher was looking down at the ground the whole time. Runner on 3rd could have walked home. Runner on 3rd was 5 feet from home when the pitcher looked up.

    I don't think the trip was necessary. The pitcher didn't ever seem to acknowledge the runner on 3rd and then stares at his feet for 2 seconds.

    Situation requires a Left hand pitcher. Likely wouldn’t work on a right handed. Or could you mirror the trick and have the runner at third fall over?

    • @thatzwhat
      @thatzwhat 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      With two outs, the runner at third needs to score before the defense gets an out, so no point putting the runner at third in jeopardy. Likewise, when running the play with a left-handed pitcher the runner on first has to make sure he's not tagged out before the runner scores.

    I never pitched beyond Jr High. I can easily imagine how a young pitcher could hyperfocus on HIS plan, slowing his sensing and processing time to a strange situation like this to a crawl.

    What if the pitcher just had genuine concern for a fellow human being? A bit of a DIRTY play if you ask me;-)
    Also would it still be considered a flop if you are trying to fool other players, rather than the umps?

    When I played in junior league I did the same thing off first base. I fell down. Didn't mean to, just fell down. Then I got tagged out and my team mate on third saw me fall and was concerned so he stepped off the bag and got tagged out also.
