    Yes, a difficult job well done, indeed! Almost hate to see the saga end, that is a beautiful coach. Being an old motor head, I love anything with an engine, on wheels, rails, wings, tracks, whatever. When I was younger I often thought about getting a family motor home, especially liked the GM motor home of the era. I guess age has input some better thinking and common sense but seeing that McD coach rekindled, somewhat, that interest. But you have taught us viewers so much about the complexity of the coaches and the intricacies and demands they put on owner/operators for their maintenance. Still, had I retired a much wealthier man, I'd consider a coach similar to the beautiful McD coach. Thank you for the "education" this provided, looking forward to following your exploits "down the many roads" ahead of you!

    Congratulations on a difficult job well done. The only curse with a job like that is as you discovered someone else always sets you up for failure. Why would they think the oil line wasn't needed for the compressor when they rerouted it to the 50 DN alternator? I have to wonder if the previous mechanics had any Detroit 2 stroke experience? You would think a DD mechanic would know you can't cut off the oil supply for the air compressor.
    May the owner of that coach be trouble free for quite a while with regular maintenance.
    Thanks for all your hard work on this coach.
    Cheers!

    I have to tell you....you have what at one time was my dream job. I drove buses for 17yrs down in Houston till there was an opening in their mechanic apprentice training program. I went and took the test and passed with flying colors then had to wait for a starting date. once I had it I was on cloud 9. I had about a 4 week wait for it to start....well, 2 weeks before it was to start I was riding on one of the employee's shuttle buses headed out to go n relieve the bus I was to drive for that night when this out of state driver with no insurance ran a redlight n hit the bus I was in head on. I had just started to stand up to get my gear together when it happened. I had the joy of playing pinball inside the bus which resulted in me destroying both my neck as well as my left shoulder. 3 operations and 15 years later im still trying to get recovered from that. god how I loved working on cars n trucks n was sooo close to working on buses and getting paid to do so....but noooooo….I love watching you work n dream of what could have been.....keep on keeping on my friend

    Since you concluded with that "Randy Quaid-esque moment" [Merry Christmas, *hitter was full], I'll add this: After hauling a local PA State Teacher's College football team in one bus, cheerleaders, training staff, and 'higher echelon alumni - fans' in a second bus, and spectators in a third, a "three - bus move", the MC96-A which hauled the team was parked in the charter lot, facing the back of the lot, which indicated that the bus needed to be serviced/cleaned/prepped for the next trip.
    When Joe, the mechanic who did most of the "get ready" work positioned the right rear corner over the sewer access manhole grate, he opened the door, pulled the handle, and about 6-ounces of "blue Inca Gold water" came out, and that was it, not one drop more!
    Now, Joe knew damn right well, that a college football team, which received boxed lunches enroute to the game, would not be shy about using the bus's toilet, so he headed back "up top" to see what "gives"... Well, he discovered that the team's lunch contained "jumbo ruby-red grapefruit", which were the exact same size as the lavatory discharge line and gate.
    Joe asked the chief mechanic, Butch, what to do, and Butch replied "anything but trying to spearfish them out" [there were at least 20 in the tank]. Joe went to his home, got his "bass fishing rod/reel combo", installed a 'bluefish' hook, and proceeded, beer in hand, to fish every last grapefruit out of the tank.
    I'm fairly certain that he was heard whistling the theme for the "Orlando Wilson Fishing Show".

    Its good to see you got this bus back on the road . I learn alot from your videos. I was glad to see you were buying some quality tools I know they ain't cheap. I have a few snap on mostly craftsman but im fortunate enough to borrow snap on, mac, matco, anytime I need too . I Own an drive a truck for a living so im not constantly turning wrenches. Those Haldex compressors are junk any more I changed 3 before I ever got 1 that didnt leak air or water before I could even get the truck out of the garage. Then it failed a month later so I replaced it with a different syle it lasted about 4 months before it started getting noisy. It still works but I keep my fingers crossed every day with it . Keep up the Videos. 👍👍👍

    I kind of laughed seeing that oil tank back there like that. Reminded me of working on those for a tour company - the drivers would leave gallons of oil and the shit hose there and one came back after the whole tin sheet had dropped out on the highway. Couldn't imagine being the car behind that one!

  • @neil6212

    Over all, a fabulous rescue! Are you later going to restore the fire damaged compartment? Should be interesting. How come you ended up replacing the necessary oil hoses with regular (Expen$ive) hydraulic hose, instead of re-using the original type reusable ends and the OEM type external braid hose? I assume it is still available. On the subject of hoses, I went to using the teflon hose with the stainless steel braid, and reusable fittings, although a new ferrule had to be used every time. Generally bought #4 hose in rolls of 50'. Worked great, but had o be kept away from situations where it could vibrate against something to wear a hole in the braid. I don't know what that system costs now, but it is probably up there. (I bought all of the shop supplies at work, where we used a number of small high pressure hoses, as well as of various hydraulic hoses. We had a crimp machine for those regular hydraulic lines, mounted to a rolling cabinet with drawers where we put the fittings, some hose, and the needed tools for making them up. Also had a Metabo 6" angle grinder with their "slicer" abrasive blades. Best whiz wheel cut off tool I ever used.)
    Looking forward to your next adventure in buses! You bring back some fond wrenching memories, as well as recall of some messes... I'll never be able physically to do this stuff again, but enjoy reminiscing!

    Great a boat Detroit. Just as im curious about the smaller 2 & 3 cyl Detroit's for a smaller sailboat engine. Maybe a 1cyl if they made it for a generator. I like the mechanical simplicity of Detroits and possibility of running alternate fuels in a remote location on a boat. Eventhough your working on 6 71s at least ill see a boat set up

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lots of 2-71 gensets are out there. And bigger. Ive never seen a 1-71 generator but that don’t mean they don’t exist

    • @Deftonesdsm
      @Deftonesdsm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BusGreaseMonkey hmm. Can they run without blowers? Ive seen the 2-71 gensets thinking would be great small sailboat engine. A lot more powerful than a standard engine for that boats size. Up to 34' usually a 3cyl kubota/yahnmar 16-25hp used for in harbor docking. Id like to use engine to go as fast or close to under sail. A 2-71 surely could do that simply easy to fix and im guessing could run a high %age of oil or kerosene off the mainland.

      @Mercmad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BusGreaseMonkey I worked on a bulldozer once with a 2.71 in it . I can't remeber what brand dozer it was though but it was leaker ,almost as much oil on the outside as was in .

    • @Mercmad
      @Mercmad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Deftonesdsm No, they use the blower as a scavenge air flow, the fresh air is blown into the engine ,and when the ports in the liners are exposed by the piston coming down,it blows the exhaust out through the valves in the head. Hence the two stroke. What you need to look for is a reduction box with a reverser ,usually a 2-1 reduction .The engine isn't needed to run big RPMs just produce lots of torque(the reduction helps this) ,so you will also need advice on prop diameter and pitch.Bolinder (the B in Volvo BM ) used to build single cylinder diesel engines for fishing boats which were often 60 x 15 foot. A real torque monster they were known as the boom boom bolinder .

    • @Deftonesdsm
      @Deftonesdsm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mercmad thanks 4 the info. So kinda like a miller cycle where the valves stay open for blower to force in air. No valves in 2 stroke but yeah. I already figured running a reduction trans/box and going with a correct size prop for rpm/boat size. I just like simplicity of detroit or a 4-107/8 perkins

      All the vehicles I drove over 15 years of driving city buses and coaches were set to purge at 125-130 psi, normal max pressure for service brakes is 120 psi so you don't need to set it much higher than that.
      If your system is pressurising to 150 psi it's an indicator you have issues somewhere in the air system (faulty pressure limiter/air dryer, tanks full of crud etc).

      That's how versatile the Detroit's were. They were used in so many different applications (stationary too) Many parts are modular/ interchangeable apparently.

    Is there any tests the buses have to pass before taking them on the highway when they have been standing for years... like the UK equivalent of an MOT or road safety certificate?

      Only in a couple of states. 90% no yearly inspections required

      In California at least if it is operated as a motor home there are no inspection requirements but if it is still a bus there is no proof required to register. There are 90 day inspections on all heavy duty vehicles. When you get your regular highway patrol audit you better have proof they were done on time and all items that didn't pass were fixed. I am not sure but I think this is a federal requirements too. I'm not sure on bus specific rules. I am in heavy trucks.

    Does it have an electric circulation pump to move the coolant up to the heater core? Would that work as aux cooling if it gets close to overheating?
