I have some really tragic news to tell you, Megan. Yesterday *Arleen Sorkin the voice and original inspiration for the creation of Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series sadly passed away at the age of 67* . I didn't want to sadden you but I wanted to inform you now since you are such a fan of this show, much like many of us are. Arleen Sorkin was the original inspiration that drove Bruce Timm and Paul Dini to create the character and now Harley Quinn is the 4th most popular DC character to date and has impacted the lives of countless people and fans today. Arleen brought a vibrant, joyful energy to such a wonderful character like Harley and brought a perfect level of silliness, whimsical and yet emotional personality to such a role, that to this day I still hear her voice whenever I read comics about the character and voice actors for Harley Quinn today like Tara Strong, Hynden Walch, Kayley Cucco all honour her in some way and are inspired by Arleen's incredible and impactful performance.
    Rest in Peace Arleen Sorkin

First Conroy, now Arleen. Sorkin truly was the definitive Harley Quinn. Actresses like Tara Strong do good with Harley Quinn, don’t get me wrong, but Arleen was definitely the best Harley Quinn. May she Rest In Peace.

@@mikephelps9238 Yeah to me she was the definitive voice of Harley Quinn whenever I read comics in her voice, so hearing that she passed away at the age of 67 no less, is nothing short of a tragedy especially since she inspired the creation of Harley Quinn to begin with. Hopefully shes resting well with Kevin Conroy. RIP

Ivy is a character that can be empowering but can go over the edge into narcissism. She used her “family” as she wanted threw them away when they lost value. You can get interesting perspectives on her based on the viewer.

One of the best of the series. It has an unintentionally funny moment with Batman in broad daylight in a tree with binoculars spying on Ivy as if he's incognito. Also love how she fooled him in the end.

This was always one of those episodes that I used to skip as a kid, because I just found it so disturbing at the time. Mostly because of the kids, but as I got older the whole keeping the doctor alive in the basement and "extracting" his DNA did leave me morr disturbed. I felt it walks a good line between sympathy and still making it clear that Ivy isn't a saint. The infertility angle in particular I found interesting since I had seen women in my life go through that and how it personally effected them. Just so tragic to see and very powerful when they found ways around it and found happiness for themselves.
I always liked Ivy as a character honestly, the tug between her humanity and the need to be mother nature's unfeeling enforcer. It's the kind of thing that always made me think the line between villain/anti-hero worked so well with her.

    • @Bfdidc
      @Bfdidc ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ivy has different renditions of her character, but in at least some of them, she is pretty genocidal towards humans. So, while she's sometimes sympathetic, she is deeply villainous and a casual killer. One of the misdirects in this episode, that she's truly reformed and it's her husband behind everything, works pretty well. But you know that poor guy may be rather damaged by the end of all this.

13:59 But isn't feminism about equality? idk. I feel that having full control over your family and circumstances within that familial structure, without the other participants consent, isn't feminist. But maybe you mean it's her own warped idea of feminism, and not the actual ideology of feminism? idk.
At that point, I feel like Ivy's not a feminist, she's an oppressor. But people who've been oppressed sometimes, unfortunately, become radicalized into oppressors.
    idk...
... On a lighter note, there's a great TH-cam channel called ComicPop. They have a show called Back Issues where a guy who's read comics all of his life talks about a specific story or book on a couch with his two best friends, and sometimes his wife, and they have A LOT of episodes on Batman.
Some of my favorite episodes of Back Issues are Batman: The Mud Pact, and Batman: Shaman. They had a short lived all-Batman version of Back Issues called Bat-Issues, and the episodes focused on the Robin mini seres' are fantastic. Check it out, if your interested and enjoy! :)

RIP Arleen Sorkin. As for why Ivy had a photo of Harley in her album it's only because ever since the Harley and Ivy episode (not the Harley and Ivy adult animated series on Max), she's the closest thing Ivy's ever had as to a best friend. She and Harley had no romantic feelings for one another in this animated series. The whole lesbian Harley x Ivy pairing officially began in 2013 with the Harley Quinn comic series, long after Batman the Animated Series ended. From there on out there have been many incarnations of the Harley and Ivy's relationship from simply being acquaintances or good friends all the way to sexual and all coming from sources such as fan fiction and official works canon or non-canon in reference to one another works. It all depends on the writers and producers!

Yeah, in the animated cartoon, I just remembered Ivy being a good friend to Harley and trying to get her to have self-confidence and leave her abusive relationship with the Joker. They're sweet together.

  • @Regenmacher175

I appreciate that the episode clearly wants the audience to empathise with Poison Ivy whilst presenting her actions as deeply disturbing, entirely messed up and, most importantly, wrong. She almost ruined Dr. Carlyle's life and enslaved him for who knows how long.
We can appreciate that she wants to have a family on her own terms but that too has limits, since she has her "children" steal money, extort money and blackmail people to get money. Her clone also calls them enforcers and bodyguards so they, too, are a tool she uses to get what she wants and she is willing to have them die if it means they get to kill Batman right then and there. At the end of the day, they are disposable. The fact that she is pretty much unphased and happy throughout most of the episode adds to how disturbing all of this is. She has NO empathy for any human beings who might have been willing to help her and she's not interested in reforming either, since she lied to Dr. Carlyle about that until she was able to enslave him.
Her tears are real but she is crying about her own self-inflicted misery, not because she regrets anything she has done and hence my sympathy has its limits.

Hi Meg, new fan started watching your stuff a couple of weeks back. So glad you’re continuing with BTAS and enjoying Bruce’s story across films, games, animation. If you’re a fan of media that explores Bruce’s mental health I have to recommend the story BATMAN: THE IMPOSTER.
A very dark and realistic take on Batman that explores a Bruce Wayne without his support network that almost acts like a sister story to The Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson - which is appropriate since the writer Mattson Tomlin is co-writing The Batman II . Really beautiful artwork by Andrea Sorrentino, it’s a really tragic tale of a Batman that has entirely sacrificed Bruce Wayne.
    Have a great day !

The point of "Batman the Animated Series" was to make a cartoon that wasn`t a "kids show".(They had to censor some aspects, The Joker couldn`t kill like in The Comics for instance but Dini thought the Joker grins he left his incapacitated victims with was arguably worse than death and I concur.Of course, my coulrophobia means I am biased.)

It was highly disturbing and unethical (her poor enslaved husband her poor murdered babies/clones of him, it was all messed-up...!), but her medical condition is a real one mama has--an excessively strong immune system that attacks sperm. My brother was only born via in-vitro fetillization... he's a test tube baby! More normal means of treating the condition Pamela has... but it's a real medical condition and yeah, seeing Bruce believe her and even call her Mrs. Carlyle and the tears she sheds...
Yeah, I love that Poison Ivy basically takes what are inherently good concepts (women's rights, children's rights, environmentalism) and takes them to ridiculous, dangerous extremes--she's an extremist! It makes her more grounded in reality in a scary way, even if the plant babies are too out there to be a real fear/danger.
Pam's very sweet and patient with kids, I remember she even told off a bunch of teenagers trying to harass and objectify her and Harley. "Excuse me, boys, didn't your mommies tell you that's not the nice way to get a lady's attention?" Horrid teenager goes, "Oh, and what're you gonna do, spank us?" ... then, it's HARLEY (who's a lot less maternal/patient than Ivy is with kids, fff, even if she also wants badly to be a mom and mothers her "babies"--the hyenas--and in one good ending, raises those twins [possibly her grandkids?] in Return of the Joker) who brings out a BAZOOKA, "That's right, pigs, and HERE'S the paddle!!"
