You can dislike the cause they fought for but don't hate the men, they were mostly decent people, in addition to some of the best combat soldiers this country ever produced.
Another group of men advising the enlisted of Black troops were French professional soldiers serving with the Union Army. Many of those Frenchmen had seen service in France's African colonies and were familiar with Black soldiers. If they were trained properly they would perform just as well as white soldiers.
