  • I found this Lawn-Boy L21ZPN on the side of the road - Free to a good home. I took her home and began to clean it up when I realized this was not your average lawn mower! Several secrets were hiding below the thick grime and green paint..

I have two of them ..an old 1970's model and a 2001...use them all summer ...love that two stroke smell 🙃.
It's been said that they were the most efficient engines at converting fuel into smoke and noise ..

Why do some people love two-stroke engines?
    1. They're a simpler design than four-stroke.
    2. The simpler design means they're cheaper.
    3. They can rev MUCH higher than four-stroke, so it's basically a dirt cheap racing engine.
The down side is the stink, the noise, mixing the oil/gas every time, and they're a bit worse for smog laws.
But if you like cheap and powerful, two-stroke is a good way to get there.
There are some old two stroke Saab cars prized by ice racers for insane high output and reliability. It's like having a Wankel engine, but lasts a bit longer.

I grew up with a lawn boy, that thing was at least 20 years old but was still running when we got a new lawn mower

I just pulled an older one of these out of a customer's crawl space Monday of last week and he told me to keep it. Now that I know it's a two-stroke this thing is for sure getting fixed up!

2 stroke everything! Vevor actually makes a really good ultrasonic cleaner.

The plastic cover on the deck is where a bagger attachment went.

Keep the mower. just purchase a spare ignition coil. Lawnboys are notorious for that. I have one of these in storage until I purchase a coil and had a Duramax 6.75 I sold that, Wish I had kept it. And an old 1967 model that I run every now and then. They always devoured long grass no problem. I'm 57 so started with the old 18' Iron horse/Lawnboy as a kid. With a 16:1 fuel ratio? She kept mosquitos and other flying insects away lol. And I loved the smell of fresh cut lawn combined. Enjoy your mower keep it!

I have the exact same model Lawn Boy as you do there. Mine was built in Apr 1991. The first 4 digits of the serial number (J346), tell you when it was built. In your case, J=1990. 346 is the day it was built. Yours was built Dec 12, 1990.

I remember seeing lawn boy mowers for sale in the early 60's at the SEARS STORE. They were expensive. My friend had a goat named lawn boy. Lawn Boy built their mowers, deck & engine.

Some of the best mowers ever made. I believe they were made by the Johnson Outboard Motor Company at one time. Emissions regulations pretty well killed them. The best ones in my opinion were the 70’s and early 80’s ones with cast aluminum decks. My dad loved these things, he had 23 of them and two sheds full of parts when he passed. Unfortunately most of it went to scrap as Lawn Boy enthusiasts are dying off. Yours I would guess to be a 90’s model.

My old 6.5 duraforce lawnboy handles thick heavy grass better than my new commercial Honda....

Can’t believe you didn’t recall that it’s a 2 stroker. These were the best mowers. The offset wheels made it perfect for running over roots, rocks, etc. You just couldn’t hit the blade on anything because of the wheel configuration.

I wore one out doing neighbors lawns as a kid. That big plastic cover is the non clippings collector, there was a tunnel housing to hook up the grass catcher that went on that same hole in the deck. The one I used was back in the late 60's early 70's. It was an ok unit. But I personally liked the brig's or the umaah motors. They seemed to hold up better in my case.
