That title is exactly what I've been saying to people all week. Unicorn Overlord feels like a FE game from an alternate timeline where every sequel was a notable mechanical improvement instead of being pretty much the same thing but more anime.
I like how everyone's reactions are "stereotypical plot". But imagine this: You're a 15 year old who has not played any Fire Emblem game yet. ... We are old... Anyway I really liked the demo.
I'm 33 and I've never played one, only games of this genre I've ever played were ancient ones, no specific name comes to mind, but they were the typical "start in a town and you gotta fight the evil army of something and you recruit people and take turns to move around the map, go rest in cathedrals, and all of that with a overview looking at all those 8-bit pixel characters" that old.
I hope this game sells well so Square will go "Oh shit, we have Ogre Battle, we should make more of those.". Also hope that Intelligent Designs looks at these and gives them ideas for Fire Emblem. The Liberation mechanic and freedom to go to certain places in the order of your choice would lend itself well to Fire Emblem. Also this might piss a few people off, but I wouldn't mind seeing a Fire Emblem with these kind of Unit Usage (As in multiple characters per unit, would also make Capture as a mechanic more useful as it would make recruiting Generics more appealing.).
Well taking in mind FE are the kings in taking other's ideas and implementing them on their games (if you think about it, their only true original mechanic is the casino emblem growth rate) I'm pretty sure they will copy yeah.
The localization debate for this game is very stupid. As someone that worked in J->E localization while living in Japan, I can tell you that the localization team did an incredible job. The flowery dialogue is preference, but the metaphors and similes used add context and personality to the characters.
and also people have to think if the localizers had taken "liberties" with the translasion it wouldn't sound as good as it does and the character desings wouldn't be as sexy as they are i think people have been burned with many bad localizations and censorship
Most likely he heard about the "Outrage" (which was mostly one person on twitter who got clowned on by thousands of people) and didn't look further into it. This is no where close to a bad localization.
10:10 Even with a simple villain I'd still much prefer it if he just didn't say his motivations. Or maybe just a vague hint "That is not for you to know, Queen of Frauds." or something like that. The unknown is always a much better hook than just openly stating the antagonists intentions. 42:20 Now that this corrupting magic is a thing I'm hoping Valmore himself is also just corrupted like that. He would fit the pattern as he also just suddenly turned on his queen out of nowhere. Just imagine expecting the final boss fight and then he just gets uncorrupted aswell and you're like "Wtf? Then who's even the villain?" and then you have to actually find that out next. Would be a nice twist and even make that very generic villain setup work. Also kinda hoping mommy and her entire squad is also still around to be uncorrupted and get recruited back. They did all look pretty cool. 48:15 Oh? Looks like I'm starting to get my wish already. I really don't think anybody of the people who were so loyal to fight that hopeless fight for the queen at the end are not corrupted. 3:32:20 That's really nice. There's way to few games that let you hire generic units and even have stat variations and customization on them.
Yeahhh I'm used to hearing it called that now but when they kept it I was shocked. I really need to play that one too. It looks super cool and that's kinda why a more charming name I feel like could've paired well with that.
Good, either a franchise will supplant Intelligent Systems' stranglehold or at least coexist putting pressure on them to make a better Fire Emblem or remake of Genealogy.
I think the game took inspiration mostly from ogre battle 64 than fire emblem, but there are a lot of similarities. I'm not sure how knowledgeable the devs are when it comes to other games though, Vanillaware games come in many genres, but they really never miss; Their games almost always have great gameplay, or great story, and sometimes both.

I had a blast with the demo. I agree that they took Scarlett away a bit too soon, so you don't really have the time to get invested. That and the localization are pretty much my only two issues with the game so far.
Kayli Mills is Scarlett's English VA. She voiced Mareeta, Thea, and Tsubasa in FE Heroes she seems to be a fairly recent newcomer in the VA field (compared to some of the others I know of, she started in 2016)
Mangs i dont kno if you have ever played Tactics Ogre Person of Lordly Caliber on Nintendo 64 but some of the mechanics are very reminiscent of that as well, the deployed units, marching, stamina, sleeping to replenish stamina, capturing forts, swapping between units
This game is actually so good. I wish a lot of games were this good instead of being more pretty. This is like Nephilim Saga on steroids. It's so good.
Excited as always to see more content from you Mangs. Especially in the case of this game that I've fallen in love with so much! 3 full runs of the Demo under my belt, the last one on Expert while completing every mission available in the Demo so far. I adore this game and can't wait for the full release!
We have NEEDED a new, modern Ogre Battle game! So happy for this, despite the derped title… Mangs, If you ever play either March of the Black Queen or Ogre Battle 64 I will watch the heck out of those vids!
I hear Matsuno himself is also interested in Unicorn Overlord demo. Hope he gets inspiration and drive enough from UO to make an Ogre Battle sequel. He's like an artist that works only in the right mood lol
Hey Mangs, glad to see you're back. Wish I could've caught the stream live but ah well. As for Unicorn Overlord being great: I'm not surprised. Vanillaware always raises the bar for everything they do. They're a legendary game developer who makes some of the most stunning 2D games, well, ever (on top of them all being very, very fun and enjoyable).
"if the game is great the story doesn't have to be revolutionary" hmmmm what does this remind me of , Very cool game and fun stream though. Excited for the full launch in a couple of weeks
Localization in general has been trash. They need to fire every localizer and replace them with people that can translate and localise in a way to preserve the original story and context . @@Xord2006
This game is a lot of fun. I really liked the demo and buying this day one. I would recommend Lost Eidolons. It is extremely similar to Fire Emblem. The realistic artstyle is off putting but it is a fun strategy game. I have been playing that in my spare time.
This game looks like Fire Emblem! No, it's probably similar to Ogre Battle! Vanillaware, grinning at you before they snarled, "Have you ever heard a tale of a forgotten Square Enix game named The Last Remnant?"
Triangle Strategy with evil religion antagonist: "Wow so generic who'd have thought they'd be evil" Unicorn Overlord with guy who wants to rule world. "Typical but you don't need to reinvent the wheel this is a real final boss. :)"
@@ZangelinNah I think it's about predisposition. When someone goes in wanting to like something they'll find all the excuses, and when someone goes into something wanting to hate it, they'll nitpick it to death. Triangle Strategy was really interesting because a lot of the story revolved around something as mundane as salt, whereas every other JRPG or Fire Emblem game revolves around magical rocks, demon kings or dragons.
@@user-zq1eo2pp5s I like Triangle Strategy because it doing something different. It was to hard gameplay for me, but i like the try. The sad thing is i don't see what Unicorn Overlord is doing so different. It is copy pase FE story with easier game play. So why the noise?
I love how the chat is just constant backseaters spamming the same things over and over, and half the time it’s either bad advice or literally just wrong lol
I don't blame the chat since this guy plays like he is trying his best to annoy every watcher. Doesn't read battle forecasts, doesn't capture bridges, ignores tutorials, uses the same unit for every battle, cannot press the correct button even after 3 hours of playing...
3:23:00 Yeah bro, this DOES "happen all the time". And the only reason they have to keep trying is because people spread the word and we make our voices heard. You're in the EU, so your internet is already pretty censored.
This demo is looking so awesome! Just out of curiosity, do you happen to have dyslexia? I notice you misreading many words. Or is it just the font is too small?
@@DankbeastPaul I’m not just talking about technicals I’m talking about optimization as well as the expanded feature set related to compatibility. Outside of Capcom Japanese PC ports tend to be underdeveloped compared to western counterparts.
Really enjoying the demo, hoping spelbutiken delivers my copy for Switch in time for the weekend. I was a bit sceptical when the info reached me about the battle system being pseudo-real time as I really never liked real time-battle systems in RPG:s, esp as I play on console mostly...but Im glad that I so far find the combat to be quite enjoyable and the balancing in getting the right troops to the right place in time, getting the troops rest at the right spot etc. is really challenging in the good, non-frustrating way. There seem to be quite a bit of depth in the combat system and in the world building as well....I think this game has a good chance to be GOTY 2024 for me. :)
Just wanted to say something about the "controversy" surrounding the localization. They merely changed the dialogue to an older style of English, to match the setting. The original dialogue is very plain in comparison, making the localization a major improvement.
Nah this is major cope. They've inserted all sorts of unfunny jokes where there previously were none and changed the tone of certain characters like Chloe quite dramatically.
@@Dread_Maximus where are you getting that information? I've looked, and all I can find is the original poster bitching about the "flowery language", and the response by Yasumi Matsuno. Matsuno does make a reference to humor, but only in a general sense. I've yet to see anything referencing bad jokes, or changed characters.
@@neidhardt8093 I blame the localizers more than anyone at this point. They been going on a downward track on everything they localize being Flat, stiff and bad.
I really like the dialogue, but it is "stiff" as in: very flowery prose and formal theatrical style of line delivery. Its unnatural. Mind you, I think it fits the setting beautifully, and I am pro localization changes, always, when it comes to these games. Im slightly biased tho, considering I grew up on Final Fantasy XII, which I to this day hold as one of the greatest examples of how localization changes managed to elevate the narrative and line-to-line dialogue flow.
4:28:40 Yeah. Definitely feeling the *need for a 4th lunatic style difficulty* already. The game is already showing alot of min-maxing potential with all those hard counters, abilities and extra effects. 3 Difficulties is too low for any of these strategy games where alot of mechanics can interact and synergize with each other. There's just too wide of a gap to bridge when there's that much of a skill ceiling. Fire Emblem keeps making that mistake too. 3 difficulties is way too low. You'll already need 1 for the extremes of baby/story mode and min-maxer lunatic mode. With just 3 that leaves you with only 1 difficulty to cover the entire wide middle range. That's impossible. I think 5 is the minimum needed. The more the better. A smart developer would plan for that ahead and make difficulties easily configurable with a prameters. (enemy bonus stat %, extra enemy batches 1: yes/no, extra enemy skill set 1: yes/no, etc.) If you do it like that, all you need is to develop the extremes of baby and lunatic mode and then make just extra config settings for whatever many versions you want inbetween. You could even allow custom difficulties, where the player can set those parameters.
There’s no need for that. Difficulty settings are the laziest way to solve this problem. Optional objectives and optional prepromotes you can use as crutches are all you need
I understand why people like that style of difficulty settings but without a structured challenge I find myself constantly thinking about whether I should tweak this or that difficulty setting and usually end up making the game so hard I'm not having fun and then lowering something and feeling like I gave up. It's hard to ask a player who doesn't know what the game's difficulty curve is going to be like to make a judgement on difficulty in the first place even without that level of minutia. For me what fixes this design strategy is when there's also easily visible achievements that are like 'beat the game with all sliders set to at least hard'. People who like a more freeform experience probably aren't going to care about something like that and people who need structured goals like myself have something to go on.
Does this game have any dumb fluff garbage like modern FE? Does it make you build castles, tend to a high school, feed "dragon" women, or some other stupid sim bullshit? That's the main thing that turned me off to the series. I like the older games just keeping a focus.
I don’t like all the extra stuff they added into fire emblem either. The monastery is such a chore and I just want to fight. But the main reason I haven’t gotten into newer fire emblems is the graphics and 3D models. I think they look meh. I much prefer the sprites and art style of this game. It looks so good!!

What makes me kinda happy is this comes out before my birthday, which is on the 17th of March.

This Demo runs smoothly in my old 1st gen Switch, I will buy it.

Oh lawd those games
I think the game took inspiration mostly from ogre battle 64 than fire emblem, but there are a lot of similarities. I'm not sure how knowledgeable the devs are when it comes to other games though, Vanillaware games come in many genres, but they really never miss; Their games almost always have great gameplay, or great story, and sometimes both.
The story and the looks of some character are copy pase Fire emblem, only gameplay is different.
This session has just been full of memes.

Mangs: P A N I C C "Please ban this man, please ban him right now"

XDDDDDD
It's so funny how everyone in the chat acts like they've been playing the game for 100 hours already.
Its an about 7 hours demo which released some time ago. Every TH-camr has already made vids on all secrets.
10:26 "The people who played this game made Fire Emblem" - Mangs
51:40 House Carls? What are those? Like Facility Manager Carls? Can you call those when your toilet is clogged? "Hey, Carl! Carl, get over here! I need you in my toilet." 1:06:35 What is this nonsense of this Carl being named Stephan. He's clearly a Carl. There better be a Carl the Housecarl in this game, I swear. 1:37:40 Lies! They are known for their floor swiping and plumbing skills.
3:23:08 Terminator Mangs mode on. (That's so strange. Why does one eye get dark when the flashbang goes off and shines more light on it. How does that work outside of having a robot eye? Is that the true power of color-blindness?)
the I personally would describe the vibe of the plot as "classic"

4:28:50 Bye Bye 👋
I love how everyone I've seen so far goes "Wow this music, great first impression" :D Vanillaware / Atlus knew exactly what they were doing haha
name is a lot better than 2XKO at least.
That dude at around 20:00 is totally wrong. Hina is the Japanese VA. The English one is Kayli Mills.
Been suffering from a remake of a renowned srpg game for koreans, and this unicorn thing might save us srpg craving koreans with some tastes.
They could call it poop nose battler for all I care, this game is fun!
Man who only plays Fire Emblem: "THIS GAME IS FIRE EMBLEM OMG"
Every single strategy game like this is always "OMG THIS IS FIRE EMBLEM" like Fire Emblem didn't copy this idea from earlier games.
I had a blast with the demo. I agree that they took Scarlett away a bit too soon, so you don't really have the time to get invested.
That and the localization are pretty much my only two issues with the game so far.
This game is amazing! After 13 sentinels I already knew Vanilla Ware was one of the best game developers around, this game just proves that as a fact.
Let's hope they also put some writers of 13 Sentinels on the job aswell. If they did, this is going to be anything but generic.
Your Highness, we are running out of blue paint.
I really hope you'll make a full let's play of this game once it releases
Kayli Mills is Scarlett's English VA. She voiced Mareeta, Thea, and Tsubasa in FE Heroes she seems to be a fairly recent newcomer in the VA field (compared to some of the others I know of, she started in 2016)
Apparently she also plays Emilia in Re:Zero and Yunyun in KonoSuba.
This looks like another vanillaware banger. Can’t wait to play this in March
This game gives Octopath traveler vibes and im loving it.
First to make timestamps gets pinned
Working on it
Edit: @hollowfox213 finished making the timestamps
Mangs i dont kno if you have ever played Tactics Ogre Person of Lordly Caliber on Nintendo 64 but some of the mechanics are very reminiscent of that as well, the deployed units, marching, stamina, sleeping to replenish stamina, capturing forts, swapping between units
This seems very much like a spiritual successor, yeah.
I got an ad for the free demo of Unicorn Overlord when I clicked on this video :D
41:52 "somehow, palpatine returned"
2:14:39 im time stamping this for when he gets the full game and realizes that his choise here did matter.
We have NEEDED a new, modern Ogre Battle game! So happy for this, despite the derped title…
Mangs, If you ever play either March of the Black Queen or Ogre Battle 64 I will watch the heck out of those vids!
I hear Matsuno himself is also interested in Unicorn Overlord demo. Hope he gets inspiration and drive enough from UO to make an Ogre Battle sequel. He's like an artist that works only in the right mood lol
Has mags not played any vanillaware game before? Not even 13 Sentinels: Ageis Rim?
Imma pretend Engage never happened and make this the new fe:
"Wow this new fe sure is different. I like it"
i liked engage

Engage was based though
Lmao stay in denial then
Stay in denial if you want engage is in my top 5 best fire emblem
Hey Mangs, glad to see you're back. Wish I could've caught the stream live but ah well.
As for Unicorn Overlord being great: I'm not surprised. Vanillaware always raises the bar for everything they do. They're a legendary game developer who makes some of the most stunning 2D games, well, ever (on top of them all being very, very fun and enjoyable).
Hope you all enjoy the game play of this!
Can’t wait for when it’s released
The backseating from the chat is insane.
I fucking KNEW you would play this Mangs. Fuck yeah! I am excited for the playthrough.
Can you promote units or evolve them just like in Fire emblem?
Yes
Sort of, every class eventually can become an advanced 2d tier version of the class.
Idk if it was said but you always want someone with your jaegin, so that the exp is shared and not wasted
This game looks like fe and Odin sphere had a baby
i was thinking more like an updated Orge battle 64
Fun stream and a great game, can’t wait to play it myself as well as watch you play it
"if the game is great the story doesn't have to be revolutionary" hmmmm what does this remind me of , Very cool game and fun stream though. Excited for the full launch in a couple of weeks
"Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?"

It also has to not be cringe
Engage is not that cringe if you play with the japanese voice but the Bad translation doesn't help @@Hone_mor2525

this brings me so much nostalga from the N64 days of orge battle 64
This game is a lot of fun. I really liked the demo and buying this day one.
I would recommend Lost Eidolons. It is extremely similar to Fire Emblem. The realistic artstyle is off putting but it is a fun strategy game. I have been playing that in my spare time.
This is going to be such a great series to follow.
from what i know caniliaware never doeshsequels to their games
This game looks like Fire Emblem!
No, it's probably similar to Ogre Battle!

2:17:13 OVERCORN UNILORD 🤣
Triangle Strategy with evil religion antagonist: "Wow so generic who'd have thought they'd be evil"
Unicorn Overlord with guy who wants to rule world. "Typical but you don't need to reinvent the wheel this is a real final boss. :)"
It's all about the execution.
The virgin sneaky religious guy vs the chad huge guy with an axe and glowing eyes.
@@user-zq1eo2pp5s I like Triangle Strategy because it doing something different. It was to hard gameplay for me, but i like the try.
The sad thing is i don't see what Unicorn Overlord is doing so different. It is copy pase FE story with easier game play. So why the noise?
Oldie but Goldie versus Tired ass trope that was dumb when it first rolled out.
Scarlett kinda sounds like azula, and the queen sounded like Laura Bailey
Needs Moar Ogre Battle!!!
Yeah they do what SquareEnix wont and make good games.
They got lucky with Octopath and Triangle but usually isn’t their jam
Great stream Mangs!
Unilord Overcorn
must say. pretty impressed so far. with the gameplay. guess i'll give the demo a try too.
And gotta admire vanillaware's love for jiggle physics
I love how the chat is just constant backseaters spamming the same things over and over, and half the time it’s either bad advice or literally just wrong lol
Welcome to livestreaming.
I don't blame the chat since this guy plays like he is trying his best to annoy every watcher. Doesn't read battle forecasts, doesn't capture bridges, ignores tutorials, uses the same unit for every battle, cannot press the correct button even after 3 hours of playing...
Lol, why do they move like that when she's standing still? Are those her lungs?
Chat really had to SPELL out 'magick' for Mang 🤣
What a fantastic stream! ❤
2:58:00 you have gear rewards like the poison sword you never equipped
Magick instead of magic is used in a lot of fantasy games.
Yup, Dragon's Dogma comes to mind
3:23:00 Yeah bro, this DOES "happen all the time". And the only reason they have to keep trying is because people spread the word and we make our voices heard. You're in the EU, so your internet is already pretty censored.
I only played the demo for like 1 hr. Cuz at that point I said "Ok, I am gonna buy this on release. I can stop here and wait for the full drop

i was gonna buy it even without the demo
@@marsgreekgod oh word. I'll keep at it

Even that is better than "Various Daylife"
I wish he'd stop complaining about the jiggle physics before localizers take as much 'liberties' as they did with FE fates.

I cant believe you just made me buy Unicorn Overlord :)
I agree. I like the new flavorful English dialogue. Reminds me a lot of Fire Emblem Echoes localization which was awesome.

@@Dread_Maximus i'm just happy they kept the sexy character desings
"dialogue is a little stiff"
What do you mean by that? Is it that it's weirdly formal, or...?
They talk like the romanticized plays of medieval times instead of how a normal person would speak.
@@winghong3This has a different director and writer than Vanillaware's other games, so that's probably why.
@@neidhardt8093 I blame the localizers more than anyone at this point. They been going on a downward track on everything they localize being Flat, stiff and bad.
@@rance2799its set in medevil times so yeah. What you want cringy engage storytelling
Pc bros in shambles rn
I'll get it for my emulator before you 😂😂😂
You know, I was kinda mad when I saw this video, I didnt even watch it. Then after playing im completely hooked and 101% agree with you now.
Mangs, have you ever played any Ogre Battle games? UO is like a mash up of FE and OB.
Here's the localization "controversy" in a nutshell.
Does x happen? Yes.
Does x apply here? No.
Plain and simple. 🤷♂️
Good demo it goes about 7hours. Very good game
Triangle Strategy ruled though
Where's the timestamps guy??
Does this game have any dumb fluff garbage like modern FE? Does it make you build castles, tend to a high school, feed "dragon" women, or some other stupid sim bullshit? That's the main thing that turned me off to the series. I like the older games just keeping a focus.
@@winghong3 I'll keep an eye out on this. Thank you, King.
