Thanks Sean for another easy to understand tutorial. I'm 67 and just got into the hobby last year and have been following you religiously. Keep them coming......
@@tyhigh1223 thank you so much, the technology is a little overwhelming. I have a base 3 and one Power master . According to the manual it states that I will need Two power masters ! Why two ?
Hi Sean, again great learning video, just trying to figure out how to select the 5 different horns/whistles with the base3 side of the app. Thanks, Mike
Thanks, Sean, for Part 1 and Part 2. You deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, especially for Part 1. I have a question for you [and others]. I plan to use the AP. I noticed you used your iPhone rather than your iPad to illustrate it. If you used the AP to run your trains, would you prefer the largest-screen iPhone or a mini iPad? I do not have either and am trying to decide which to purchase. If the iPad were kept on a stand, that would be one thing. But I plan to have the AP in my hand as I walk about the layout. Would a mini iPad be ungainly to carry around? Would the iPhone be a better choice? Or would the larger screen of the mini iPad be more important than the iPhone's ease of handling?
It's just personal preference. For me a phone is like holding a remote, so I like the smaller size. Plus, the app has not yet been optimized for iPads. So, it's an iPhone app running on an iPad, not a real iPad designed app, and I have found some display issues because of that, although it generally works. Hopefully Lionel will eventually design an actual iPad version.
@@seanstraindepot Thanks. I agree with you, but I just wanted my inclination supported by an experienced user. I will buy the larger-screen iPhone. I have a small-screen iPhone 10 now, and it is time to upgrade anyway.
Great video Sean, very informative. So I may be jumping the gun but I’m having a difficult time figuring out how to control conventional/non Lionel engines. I have an old/newer. ZW running 3 180 bricks. Channels 2 & 3 work fine but I can’t get channel A ( variable voltage) to work. I even purchased a separate legacy power master… still nothing. I assume it’s in my programming sequence. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 😊
Based on comments in threads on the OGR Forum, it sounds like Lionel "forgot" to properly include the ability to control either the older command controlled ZWs or the more recent ZW-L with the initial CAB-3 App release. (also Legacy Power Masters). It sounds like it totally slipped Lionel's collective mind that "TR" can also mean Track, not just Train for lash-ups. :(. The earlier Command capable ZWs that used the bricks had different behavior for the inner(B/C) and outer(A/D) channels. With the handles set properly to allow command operation of the track voltage (if memory servers you have to physically have them dialed up to whatever you want to be max voltage for it to work), A and D would start at zero and you would have to dial them up using TR commands to get what you want, but B and C would start at max voltage and you would have to dial them down with the TR commands if desired. (the design thought back then presumably being for people who would use B&C for accessories (or command control loops) that would not normally require variable voltage). So it might make sense that you see voltage coming off of channels B and C, but nothing off of Channel A. (since B&C would start at full voltage, per the handle settings) But than again, you said B and C "work fine". Does that just mean you observed they did put voltage on the track (which would match my description above), or were you actually able to adjust the voltage using TR commands (which would be totally confusing since others' comments seem to indicate this function is not yet implemented in the CAB-3 App)?
@@dave_7235 Thank you, you understand and explained my predicament perfectly. B &C are sending the 18 volts to the track, I haven’t tried to adjust their voltage because those are my dedicated command loops. I emailed Lionel and their only suggestion was to “try and reprogram the legacy power master” I’ve purchased a couple TMCC direct lockons and I try the reprogramming of the power master. Thank you so much for your reply. You’re the first person that’s addressed conventional control. I’d appreciate any further information you could provide when it becomes available. Thanks again🙂

@@dave_7235 One more quick question...So if I'm understanding it correctly the Base 3 app will not send a TR -1 (variable voltage) command to the track but will the physical remote Cab 1L work?
@@TaylorsTrains I re-reviewed the content I had originally seen regarding this, and I believe that is correct. Fantastic. Command control is fun and I think you will like it. Don't get discouraged by the new App with its current bugs until they fix them all. You can also get a handheld remote too, which works perfectly with the Base 3.
there is a glitch when running two locos on the Bluetooth side. In my case, signal for the second loco would be lost at random, and it would come to a stop. Not possible to reacquire, unless whole system shut down and rebooted. Noted also that one of my all-powered ABA units lost signal to at least one of the three units-you could here the wheels dragging across the track.

Are you going to do one on how to set up modules. According to the manual online.. the cord that you used to use for the legacy command/base1 is no longer required. How would I set up the ASC2 and link them up together and have them both talk to the Sensir track and base3
That doesn't really have anything to do with the new Base 3. I did that many, many years ago in my O Gauge Layout Build series. Like episode 5 Part 1 & 2
@@seanstraindepot Yes, I think I figured it out, Sean! Thanks. I hooked up the one ASC2 I have to the base/Sensortrack and base3. Still waiting for the other wires and ASC2 to show up. Looked at the manual and according to the manual I don't need to hook it up to command/remote switch since it’s already has command control. I would just have to hook up the PD1 keyboard to the other sensor tracks and the other ASC2. So I appreciate you explaining it and I’ll be keeping my eye out for more videos that you make regarding the base3
I also have the same bug on my Lionel Bluetooth app where the slider mysteriously goes back to "0" on the second engine. That's irritating. Thanks for reporting that bug to Lionel! Thanks for the great videos Sean and thanks for the help on the OGR forum this weekend as everyone tries to figure this new system out! Looking forward to the third video and curious if you run into the same issues I did with running multiple trains and having them interfere with each other and locomotives . . . ie going to control one train, and another train and two locomotives move without being addressed. Would also be interesting to get a tutorial for using a station sounds diner as programmed into a train. Also curious if you were able to turn lights on/off with the Aux 2 button. I could not get any of the lights to function there. Thanks!
I am going to try that also on the next video and see. I have had a few, let's say, haywire moments that happened. But when I use the remotes, everything works perfect. So, the app seems to be the cause and the Hardware seems very solid.
Aux 3 only works with engines that have a feature built into the engine that uses Aux 3. Any function must be in the engine. The Base/App can't trigger a function if the engine is not equipped with it. It has always been that way.
Another great video, can you do a video on setting up accessories that will work thru the base3, ie: command switches, and also engine lash-ups.......🚂
Yes sean, cover lashups in the third vid; do a demonstration please because everyone ive talked to the screen either grays out or does nothing we need step by step play by play your videos are great!❤
Thanks for part 1 and 2. I was able to get the app connected to Base 3 and got my Legacy Big Boy added to the Base 3 side without using a Cab2. I got to that feature on the BlueTooth side but it does not really work. I am guessing that there is a way on the Base3 side which should have all the Legacy features. Thanks Tom B
Remember the functions are the same as before. To change the whistle or bell on a Legacy engine equipped with that feature, you tap Aux1, then pull the whistle slider. The whistle will change each time you do that. Same for the Bell only you swipe up on the Bell icon after tapping Aux1.

Hey Sean! Nice Part 2 of the Cab3! I believe MTH is going to really challenge Lionel’s Base3 with their new WTIU, Which I believe will arrive by the end of summer.
I tried to trigger the n&w class a safety valves by holding down auxiliary 3 but that triggered the action record. How do I trigger the safety valves instead?
Ok that makes sense. Also have you tried using a touch screen pen. I found with my fingers oils etc that the stylus seems to work better for me. Thanks again, these are very informative.
Thanks for the great tutorial Sean ; 'looks like the idea has potential. I'm gonna include one alongside the Cab-1L. Look forward to how you include "trains" and all the miscellaneous Lionel accessories with it as well.
It was started, or you can't get the Engine Menu, but I will try it again. There seems to be a lot of holding down buttons instead of tapping like on the old remote. Not documented at all or it's a bug. Hard to know without Lionel chiming in.
So you should know that bluetooth has a delay of up to 2 seconds from the engine, note that you get that delay with wireless headphones or EarPods. My recommendation is to go back and forth to ensure your connection is more constant… I suspect it is the Bluetooth transmitter in the engine. Might be older.
@@ralphbarbieri-y3j Yes I would start with that, unless there is a bug, and it does not work. Unfortunately, I don't have a Powermaster to test. Make sure everything is on the same channel.
No idea. Besides the app itself, it could vary depending how many locomotives with images you have I am guessing, since images are stored on the phone.
I guess if you have many “Cab 3” devices like phones and ipads you have to load the picture on each “Cab 3” device seperately. What a bummer, I would have thought they would load this over a master database roster kept by Lionel and downloaded using WIFI ?
Sean, great video, as always! I've had my base 3 for a few days now and you taught me more than a few things that I didn't know about the app, thanks! Something I have been unable to find anywhere is how do you reprogram TMCC engines with the app? For example: pressing ENG, 1, SET then ENG, 1, AUX1, 4. Does not program the TMCC R2LC, but creates a new engine number 14.
@@osso12 Thanks for the reply, but I'm referring to resetting the TMCC settings in the locomotive itself. Not programming the TMCC locomotive to the base 3.
I am new to the hobby, and the base 3 and the app are a complete disappointment. I don't know how they release this product in this horrid state. I have android and the app keeps crashing. I have the latest version. My app isn't working as well as yours is in the video. It takes me 10 swipes to move screens up and down. Maybe I need to buy an I-Pad? My base 3 keeps shutting off randomly after 10-15 minutes. Sometimes the base 3 won't detect my trains randomly. I can't assign a new ID number to my one new Legacy engine. The sections on lionel control aren't very thorough. There isn't any instruction manual?? I also just bought the Cab 1L remote, and it appears to work well until my base 3 shuts off. Terrible.
Very strange, I have not heard any reports of Bases shutting off. I would definitely call Lionel for that issue. Maybe a replacement is needed. The app needs work no question, but with the Cab1-L everything should work fine.

Thanks for another very informative video, real timesaver. Keep up the great work.
Sean. Another awesome video. Thank you for your explanation in layman's terms. Looking forward to upgrading my system.
I tried to trigger the n&w class a safety valves by holding down auxiliary 3 but that triggered the action record. How do I trigger the safety valves instead?
I don't have that engine, so not sure. What does your manual say on how to trigger that feature.
Great video,, you answered many of my questions that I could not find answers to.
Great videos, have you contacted Dave at Lionel regarding the glitches you have experienced?
We are supposed to report them using. TalktoUS@Lionel.com They are monitoring that.
Ok that makes sense. Also have you tried using a touch screen pen. I found with my fingers oils etc that the stylus seems to work better for me. Thanks again, these are very informative.
@@chuckhunter328 good idea too!
What does the "R" mean in the center panel?
Reset - Resets your Engine back to default settings if needed.
Can I run 2 locomotives at once with the app?
Yes, you can do everything you did with the 990 Cab2 and more!
Sean. Great video. I wish I watched this before tackling the install of my base 3. Thanks for sharing
Great video, can you turn on track power with the app? On cab2, I use tr-1-power on the button, but it's crashing the app. Thanks
I don't have a power master to try that, which I think is what you have. Could be another bug in the app.
I have the zw-l
Wow, no way part 2 already!🎉
Thanks for the great tutorial Sean ; 'looks like the idea has potential. I'm gonna include one alongside the Cab-1L.
Look forward to how you include "trains" and all the miscellaneous Lionel accessories with it as well.
Sean, great detailed learning video. I'm new to this, never had legacy remote. One question, what is the letter R for in the center of the keypad?
That should be the reset button. It resets all the engines features back to default, so you don't have to change them individually.
Are you going 2 do a video just on the new CAB 1 remote adding the engines and connecting too please?
Part 2 wow! You fastest
Aux one works but train has to be already started; hold it down for 3 seconds then release.
It was started, or you can't get the Engine Menu, but I will try it again. There seems to be a lot of holding down buttons instead of tapping like on the old remote. Not documented at all or it's a bug. Hard to know without Lionel chiming in.
My only remaining problem is not being able to hook up to home internet.
I am going to cover manual setup of the wi-fi in part 3 for those who don't have WPS or it does not work.
Thanks sir.
So you should know that bluetooth has a delay of up to 2 seconds from the engine, note that you get that delay with wireless headphones or EarPods. My recommendation is to go back and forth to ensure your connection is more constant… I suspect it is the Bluetooth transmitter in the engine. Might be older.
Hi Sean,
I am using the app but I don't know how to power the track. I have a135 power brick and a power master any ideas?
Everything should work the same way as long as it is a Legacy Powermaster.
Yes it is a legacy powermaster. Then i'm probably gonna have to reprogram the powermaster.
@@ralphbarbieri-y3j Yes I would start with that, unless there is a bug, and it does not work. Unfortunately, I don't have a Powermaster to test. Make sure everything is on the same channel.
Thanks Sean!
How much memory does it use on your phone mega bites or whatever?
You set them up the same as you would legacy... enter train ID, the SET... not SET and then ID like you stated. Hope this helps
@@osso12 Thanks for the reply, but I'm referring to resetting the TMCC settings in the locomotive itself. Not programming the TMCC locomotive to the base 3.
@@tomdinunzio9521 from what i understand, the “R” button inside the app will reset locomotive settings.
Right, the way you have always done things with either TMCC or Legacy engines is the same. The Base 3 doesn't change that part.
Great job, Sean…….thank you so much!
