How bad of a job can a fleet services shop do on a bus? This bus was unsafe to drive!

  • Someone went crazy with a grease gun, the shop charged diagnostic fees to learn about buses and still didn’t fix the issue. Lots of issues with this bus.

    That is so disappointing to have a shop like the one you have exposed in Bloomington, Indiana, continue to operate and ripoff unsuspecting and/or unknowledgeable bus owners. Scott, one of the reasons bus owners from around the country will gladly climb that super steep hill to your shop is because you and your family are such honest people with integrity, two traits that we are reminded of that seem to be short supply in so many places today. Congrats to you for doing what you do.

      Bad mouthing is one thing but the level of competence is a liability risk to his customers and not in the interest of public safety,he clearly has no interest in correcting his mistakes and was dismissive when informed of issues he had caused ,he may derive most of his income from litigation. What is legal and what is right are rarely the same thing unfortunately.

You don't protect these people you expose them.it would have been easy for the guy to say we don't have a clue versus wasting all this man's money. How's that's why there needs to be a flat rate for inspection. It's not up to the customer. You have to pay for an employee's education or in this case black thereof.

    He should take him to small claims court and sue for damages. With the video evidence you've provided along with your expert testimony in the narration, I think he would have no problem recovering the money that was basically stolen by these guys. Typically the ceiling on damages is around $10k which sounds like it would cover it. There have to be some consequences for businesses that operate in this manner, so I hope the bus owner considers filing a lawsuit. I don't think he would need a lawyer, just the video evidence and a letter from you explaining the damages they caused. Great video, guys. I'm glad his rig is now safe and roadworthy, next step is to recover his money.

Unfortunately only a accident investigation that is traced back to that fleet service shop will change the way he operates,how they can charge so much for a diagnosis for the heating system they don’t understand and failed to fix is a complete insult to the customer considering every thing they did do needed to be redone or corrected at additional cost to the customer.👍 for the best cost/safety outcome with the tires.

    That 'complimentary' DOT inspection with a passing grade is the key to receiving any type of financial compensation. The bus owner now has video proof that the bus was unsafe and should not have passed. The faulty shop should lose their ability to award such bogus certification. A formal complaint placed with the proper office in Indiana should be registered and then compensation sought through legal channels.

    • @pettyfogger2305
      @pettyfogger2305 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Seriously agree, Dean. Messing around in certifying the bus was legal to go on the road that should have been deadlined MUST have very serious consequences. Call Indiana State Police and ask to speak to someone in their MV inspections division and make a complaint using the BGM video as evidence of the crime involved.

      They didn’t spot the faulty brake chamber and other air leaks and contaminated the brake linings with grease,epic fail to leave that shop worse than it went in.If that shop services tractor trailers to the same standard is a real concern. The work that Scott does is more in line with customer expectations and and industry standards a godsend to people that buy old coaches and RVs that need honest inspections and repairs because they also benefit from his knowledge and advice.

    Scott, I worked as Manufacturer Parts & Service rep for one of the Major Commercial Trucking Companys. I traveled the country visiting franchised dealers to help improve parts and service operations. One thing they all have in common is they don't like to work on coaches. That's why their labor rates are so high for coach work, to deter having to work on them. Only because they are the area certified dealer for the power train components do they take in coaches. Overall, commercial truck dealers' are light years behind running clean shop operations as automotive has. No comparisons.

    Back in the 1970s, the worse bus company that I rode on as a passenger was the Chambly bus company in Quebec. One time I was on a bus during rush hour standing and we hit a bump. The complete floor lifted a few inches from the walls. Literally the whole floor jumped up inside the bus. Another time, there was a pickup truck with two mechanics following the bus. Every once in a while, the bus would stop and the two mechanics would get out and smack the engine with a sledge hammer then off we would go. Another time, the engine was held in with pieces of 2x4 lumber! The fare was $0.25 and when it went up to $0.35, there were huge protests!

    Here is my take on independent 'fleet maintenance' shops from 40 years ago which is probably still true today: When I got out of the auto/diesel program at my community college, I was looking for a job. My dad did accounting work for a small machine shop/auto parts store/ fleet maint. shop. The owner offered me a job at the fleet shop but the pay was minimum wage $3.50/hr. (1983). I said NO THANKS. This place worked on medium duty trucks like delivery vans and the occasional semi tractor. Poor pay for ass busting work. They had one diesel guy. No longer in business. I'm sure that places today are taking kids right out of school, paying them next to nothing and ramming the jobs through.

    Not unusual, last two fresh faced Wanderlodge owners that showed up by my shop, same experience, paid 3 grand plus for same sort of shop education that didn't get it done, then they found me, worst was they told owner it was all good, tires were 17 years old. Yes.

    There have always been bad shops out there but this was shocking! On a "serviced" bus, one bad thing after another x10 up to the grease on the brakes. That legit sent chills down my spine. Some would say it was a higher power or pure luck that guided this bus to your shop. Whatever it was, that you guys found & fixed these issues was the best possible outcome when it very well could have been a forensic team that discovered these issues while investigating the cause of a multiple fatality accident.
    imo guardian angels can deputize those who they see worthy of the job, & wings aren't necessarily a requirement.

    Hey Scott, not sure you know that there is a great seal distributor in Nashville. Signal Industrial products. They can correctly measure and match most any seal type you walk in the door with. I also use Allied bearings and supply in Nashville, near the airport. I have all the contact info if you are interested. I also run into very poor work in my business. Unfortunately it from the factory untrained technicians. The poor guys train on all of the equipment for two weeks, and sent out with tools and parts. They swap parts until they hit the bad one and the customer pays for it. Great work documenting the poor and dangerous work. I would defiantly contact the DOT, after this guys attitude and dangerous work, and possibly have his DOT a inspection license removed. Think about the vehicles that you didn’t see! Thanks.

    I managed a fleet shop for many years and we almost exclusively worked trucks, but the owner was on the list of facilities that the state troopers could call to get a vehicle off the road or send vehicles to work on if needed. So on occasion we would have busses and coaches to work on, mostly breakdown stuff, just mechanical stuff not specific to coaches. But every once in a while we would come across a coach specific repair and the last thing we would ever do is just guess on a repair. I was fortunate that I had a good friend who's family ran a commuter bus service so I always had someone I could call if we got stuck. It’s just unbelievable how bad this shop was and screwed this owner of the bus. It gives all shops a bad name when there are actors like that place

    Scott, I am now retired but have worked in the bus industry in the UK as a vehicle technician all my life, my thoughts on this…
    1, the heating / ventilation issues I can sort of understand as it can be a complex system that wouldn’t be wildly common, he should have read up on it to try and understand the operation.
    2, Bus and truck mechanical systems share the same technology so any halfway competent technician shouldn’t have any issues working on either type of vehicle. That includes knowing not to pump the brake drums full of grease, it does seem strange that there are grease fittings on the brake shoe pivot pins though, that’s something I’ve never seen.
    3, it was stated that the vehicle had a mandatory DOT inspection, as I am in the UK i don’t know what that entails in the USA but in the Uk it will include a full roller brake test with the machine providing a full print out of the results including whether it passed or failed and the relative performance of each brake unit.Having access to a brake tester makes diagnostics so much easier.
    That shop is a menace to himself any every one else

    So, I wonder, is there someone you could report them to for doing a DOT inspection with a bus in that condition.
    I’m thinking your client needs to consider hiring an attorney in Bloomington to try and get some money back.
    The defense of “ Bring it back and we will fix it” probably won’t hold water since he refused to talk with you, until you managed to get thru his defenses.
    If for nothing else, he might just make a small claims court claim, if they have it over there. - and if all else fails, there is always the TV news investigative reporter - nothing like a generous dose of accurate bad publicity to turn up the heat. Sunshine is the best disinfect.

    Scott, nice job to your and your crew for helping this guy out. unfortunately this happens a lot,and it’s not just buses. I worked 43+ years on buses and usually if we had bus down on the road and called a shop , as soon as you told them it was a bus it was either “no” or “ we’re three weeks out” I remember in one instance in a major city in the south, we had a Van Hool with a Cummins that the air compressor failed. I had it towed to franchise truck shop without calling them. My driver went in after the tow truck left and told them it wouldn’t build air. As soon as the driver told the day shift service manager it was a bus he told him they couldn’t get to it for two weeks. I told the driver to wait till the 2nd shift service manager came in and to tell him to call me, I bribed him $200 cash to get it in that night and he did. It was out the door before the day shift came in. I could go on for days telling these kind of stories. Also, FYI those mci buses with 8v92TA also over drive that radiator fan gear box slightly. We used to put a reflective strip on the upper belt pulley and check rpm at max engine no load rpm at every service. If memory serves me correctly it should be 150-200 rpm above max no load on engine rpm. Love the videos

    I really enjoy your videos. When I was a teenager I played in a band that toured in an old Flex bus. We eventually graduated to a Silver Eagle. Even though it had a ton of miles on it, this was a major upgrade. We "customized" the interior ourselves including shag carpet and homemade bunks! I love these old buses. Imagine the stories that they could tell?
    My question is, what is your background? You have such a grasp on the systems of the bus and how they all interact. Thanks for another great video!

    That's one nice thing about PA's "(Mechanical) Safety Inspection System", The moment an "Annual Safety Inspection Sticker" is affixed to the lower-left windshield, the shop's "PA Safety Inspection Station" license number, and (PA Certified Inspection Mechanic's) signature, become part of a permanent record which is managed by PennDOT, AND the Pennsylvania State Police Troopers who manage the constant auditing of the "Safety Inspection Records; Stickers, Sticker Inventories, and complaints against those stations and mechanics". Heaven help those unwise enough to play the "LICK-'EM/STICK-'EM HANK" game, because one phone call, or notification from any police department in the Commonwealth, activates the PennDOT/PSP Inspection System's "Audit Program", which immediately dispatches the PSP Trooper responsible for the area/district in which the Inspection Station is located - to that station. Each station receives at least one annual compliance review from Troopers whose task it is to audit/otherwise maintain/review the status of the station's records, their 'certified' inspection mechanics, and sticker inventories - for that area. Condolences to the owner(s) of the MC-9, and here's hoping that "suspected" shop's management grows a conscience, as it's a wonderful cure for the insomnia to follow....

    Scott, this time of year truckers are slowing down with their spending. Shops are just holding on, trying to get through these rough times. And you are right. When these truck repair shops see a bus or motorhomes pull in their lot, the shop owners automatically say no way am I working on that catastrophe. But when times are slow like these days, they'll screw a customer's eyes out to keep his shop running. Now is not the time to take a bus in for repairs to a shop that mostly works on semi's. I'd try to find a specialist like Grease Monkey Inc. Even if your prices were the same as other OTR shops, the bus owner would be getting twice his monies worth with your knowledge of coaches.

    • @mrmotofy
      @mrmotofy ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but the problem is the low number and location of these specialists

  • @mrmotofy
    @mrmotofy ปีที่แล้ว

    FYI if these customers have issues with particular shops and shoddy work, not giving refunds etc. Complaints can be made to the particular state Consumer Protection dept. Especially since they're probably in a different state its an easy way to handle issues when you're in a different state. The shops Consumer Protection dept can fine or file charges on your behalf depending on situations. Many times just a call from the dept will have the shop calling begging to give your money back to avoid dealing with the state. I've had to do it multiple times, one case even turned into a class action cuz there were so many.
