Tape distortion/compression sounds beautiful. Our ears will always prefer that analog goodness. Maybe because humans are analog. I dig the sounds. New fan….
Big help, I purchased a tascam 688 and it would not play the cassette but it would rewind and forward. I opened it up and there was no belt. I saw a video thinking to replace the motor but I wanted to know before changing the motor you think the issue was the missing belt. I have yet to receive the new belt I ordered. Just curious to know . Thank you
These cassette machines work best if the signal path is 100 percent analog, not when the sound has already been digitized, then it becomes pointless...

Great machine and nice video. I’ve owned a few of em and there great once you’ve got your head around the routing matrix.
Hey I know you!
funny meeting you here
@@travisraab haha, it’s a small world in the land cassette multitracking!! Are you thinking about getting a 688?
@@wehappyfewmusic hello no! I'm too dumb to apply for a pilots license. I'll stick with my 388 for the moment
@@travisraab 😂
Crazy they get 8 tracks onto a cassette tape

Well yeah if there's no belt I'd start by getting a belt.
i have a midistudio 644 and it has the same problem, did the belt work? i haven't opened mine to check if its the problem
Hehe I got one too ... i try to record my rs 7000 ... i am curious about the result.
Sounds ‘huge’. Ah, the days of tape. Might look into acquiring a Yamaha MTX-8, to recapture the vibe of the 4 track model I once had.
Just an observation, but shouldn't you have turned off the 4k on the SSL2 when recording back in? Nice video though.
Probably haha, I forgot
@@DonDayglow we all make mistakes. 😆
Hello! just wondering what kinda of tape can deal with the 8 track recording?
Any! Normal bias, standard cassettes working fine for me
@@DonDayglow Roger that! thank u a-lot sir!!
if you want to compare A/B you have to compensate for volume, else the louder version will sound "better"
I did, reduced the volume of the tape version by about 6db
@@DonDayglow I see, however according to the ableton VU meter there still is a difference
@@Manu-em6ed maybe a touch, I just estimated it. It doesn't diminish the point of the video though. There's a huge difference in fidelity and warmth
@@DonDayglow yes I'm not denying it, sorry if it came out the wrong way. I only intended to point out this technical issue ;-)
@@Manu-em6ed fair enough, its definitely a good point. Cheers for watching!

how so?
lousy sound-material to listen from
