    1:03 The idea to intervene in Mexico wasn't motivated by charity, but rather because Republicans needed votes. By proposing intervention, they claimed to care about "American citizens in Mexico." as well as offering a "solution" to the fentanyl epidemic. However, as we know, every country where the U.S. intervenes often ends up worse off than before, which is why Mexico's president refused the "help".

    In general conflicts in the South Americas, Africa and Asia are often overlooked by the west.
    I cannot really blame either the west in general tho for it at the same time. You are always gonna be more invested in conflicts or what happens close to you over somewhere far away.
    I cannot for example blame Poles for being more invested in the Ukraine war than whatever happens in Asia.
    And I think that is the same for people in Asia, they are probably more invested in local conflicts than whatever happens with Ukraine or S. America.

      "I cannot for example blame Poles for being more invested in the Ukraine war" - you CAN, however, blame the US. Which can afford to be uninvolved in any of these conflicts, but not only does it get involved anyway but it also foments other conflicts of its own (like the building tensions with China, which date to 2017 when Trump came to power rather than 2012 when Xi did). The difference isn't about them not being major wars, it's about the perspective. Which wars get attention has more to do with who the audience is than how big the war is. And the audience here is mostly the west. The war in Yemen deserves a LOT more attention than it got, but the west didn't care about it. We even have people ludicrously calling the war in Ukraine the deadliest war since WW2, which only reveals their ignorance cos that title is very clearly taken by the Second Congo War, which despite being only two decades old most people in the west have never even heard of (as is typically the case with African conflicts). Hell the US Iraq war has a higher death toll, but didn't arouse anywhere near as much of a reaction. Cos what makes Ukraine special is just that it's an attack on the west. Israel also enjoys a special place in the western consciousness that neither Africa, Asia or Latin America does.

      That’s mainstream media cherry picking what specific war or armed conflict they want to talk about. Take what’s going on between Israel or Palestine, or even Ukraine and Russia for example. They will on endlessly talking about the endless updates of those conflicts while not mentioning the already existing conflicts that were already going on in the world.
      It’s sad & very disheartening at the same time because while many other hundreds or even thousands of people lose their lives in conflicts in other regions/countries some will only pick certain ones to report on.

    Hi TLDR! It may be helpful for your viewers to explain that a war is a conflict that reaches 1000 combat deaths per annum. So, 999 combat deaths in a year would be considered a conflict, not a war (the number may seem abstract, but 1000 is the number that scholars have agreed upon).
    I suppose the silver lining of this video is that the end of war in the Americas is conceivable within our lifetimes.

    • @plutarch_cvg
      @plutarch_cvg ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There is no universally agreed-upon definition of war, and certainly not among scholars. Plus the one you propose does not seem to be the one they favoured for this video, as for instance the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict falls well short of that number of fatalities.

    • @drfelren
      @drfelren ปีที่แล้ว

      @@plutarch_cvg There are too many sources that back 1000 combat deaths defined as a war to list. I have degrees in both IR and history, and this is the definition that most scholars use, however, I recommend that you do your own research. You'll notice that he (and you) does not call the the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict a war - as well as the other conflicts that he correctly calls conflicts.

    • @plutarch_cvg
      @plutarch_cvg ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@drfelren I also have a degree in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies, although it's a pointless argument from authority anyway 😅
      To my knowledge, the 1000-fatalities threshold was popularized by the Correlates of War dataset, and has been perpetuated by many of the important academic initiatives to gather conflict data - UCDP and others. CoW and its analogues certainly have importance in the academic field and they have relevance if only as an empirically impactful definition.
      As practical as that metric is though, it remains an arbirtrary one chosen for analytical imperatives. War is a very complex concept historically, culturally, sociologically, linguistically, etc. and if you zoom out from the realm of quantitative data analysis there are countless ways to define it that rely on wildly different criteria (see even the basics: Clausewitz, Aron, Kaldor...)

    • @drfelren
      @drfelren ปีที่แล้ว

      @@plutarch_cvg You certainly know what you are talking about. Scholars will never agree to something as arbitrary as when a conflict becomes a war, hence the simplification of 1000 combat deaths per annum. However, war like you state is complex and is often more of a system that involves - defense economics, troop maneuvers, and wider geopolitical interests - than a conflict, which may be a brief flare up of violence.

    *Question:*
    I've seen a lot of noise about how conflicts in West Africa, the Mideast, or Taiwan would detract Military Support from Ukraine, stretch the USA too thin, and Ultimately lead to a capitulation to Russian Territorial Aggression. My question is how much of the present world conflicts since 2022 are motivated by Russia calling in favours for it's beneficiaries to start making noise to try and accomplish this even on just a level of political perception amongst western democratic populations, in order to generate even an illusion of stress that could help to damage Ukraine? Because if Russia collapses, there goes all of the assistance both over and under the table that goes to all these other countries and groups, often through secondary and tertiary entities. I'm not saying it's all smoke and mirrors, but I'm saying that I wouldn't be surprised if Russia is leaning on the scales.

    Take the war in Yemen, for instance. Enduring one of the most harrowing humanitarian crises, yet we didn't witness a worldwide light show of buildings bedecked in Yemeni colors or the sudden appearance of Yemeni flags in millions of social media bios.
