November is National Family Caregivers Month. In the United States, about 40 million people provide unpaid care to an ill or disabled adult. One-quarter of those caregivers have been in their roles for five years or longer. And these loving helpers often go it alone. Only half of family caregivers say they get unpaid help from another family member or friend.
AARP The Magazine spent 24 hours filming a day in the life of caregivers across America, documenting their joys and challenges. Read more about their stories here: www.aarp.org/home-family/careg... www.aarp.org/home-family/careg...

I especially loved seeing the woman read, "Are You My Mother". My son (diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy) has loved that book since he was a toddler.

thanks for this video. I've been caregiving for five years with unhelpful sibblings. they think nothing of what I do, they go on with their lives while I miss mine, i can't have a normal relationship, being a caregiver is a lonely place. Having said that I wouldn't change the decision I made. I love my mother who did so much for all of us, I can't put her in a home. She deserves a loving home and a hot bath every night.

Very touching, and it helps remind us that caregiving touches many lives; it's not disease specific or just for one age group.

My whole family is helping my mom who has MS. My dad cooks, my brother helps with lifts (we have a lifting system) I help my mom with the rest of her care. Bathing, changing, grooming.

The hardest part is when they pass away. My mom is a caregiver and I know the elder she takes care of. She is so sweet and kind, everyday counts with her!

No breaks. If you're pooping and they need you? Guess what? Yep, gotta cut it short. That's my life. Short poops. Its taking a toll on my stomach, I think..

I needed this! Thank you so much for the reminder that I'm not alone. No matter how alone I always feel in this grind. Having the responsibility of taking care of my grandmother (who has really filled the role of my mother all my life) who more and more, Makes it a full time struggle and fight. My own health and stress not withstanding, I've somehow endured 38 years of family fighting and sick schemes to remove me (the only protector of g-ma and her home and finances) from the situation. And i'm still the only one fighting to keep her taken care of and not taken advantage of. Everyone else wants her money, I just want to return the favor and I see it as an obligation as she took care very good care of me! and everyone else too. It's so much harder when they fight you. Especially when the ones with ill intent have deceived her into believing I'm the bad guy. Definitely didn't mean to vent, but it helped me, and I hope it helps someone else in also not feeling alone and overwhelmed. If you are a caregiver, and especially one who has to wear a shield and boxing gloves, Bless your heart!!

My mom has a stage 4 glioblastoma. My sister and I work as caregivers for her. Even with the two of us it's hard. Mom needs 24/7 care and is a two person assist - I help with transferring, from bed to wherever she needs. I pay mom's bills and manage her medical affairs and take her to all her appointments. My sister does her medicines and changes her, ( we take turns actually) and bathe her.
We feel very alone,. Mom's insurance doesn't pay for any of her supplies, or pay us as caregivers. We've put our own personal lives on hold.
I dream about life after this ordeal and it makes me feel awful guilty, it's like I'm dreaming how nice it will be after my mother passes. I wrestle with guilt over this everyday - a thousand times a day. God help and forgive me.
There's so much more that needs to be done for caregivers - we need financial, practical and emotional support - badly.

I think wether in a paid or unpaid role we are all caregivers we have the lifeskills of looking after a loved one personally in life ....
There are least jobs that make a impact on a person's life and caregiving or care work is one of them jobs bieng a caregiver is highly rewarding physically mentally and spiritually
