  • Antelope Canyon is very photogenic, but what is it like to actually tour the canyon? Find out if it's worth the trip, and what to expect when visiting.

We did a lower antelope canyon tour last April and it was absolutely incredible. I would recommend it highly to anyone. I think what makes lower antelope canyon more exciting in my opinion is that you are going up and down ladders and squeezing through canyon walls. This makes for a more exciting experience due to the more physical aspect. The canyon walls were illuminated and looked just like the pictures when we were there, despite not going during the peak time of the day. It surpassed my every expectation.

Glad you enjoyed it! For those who love "scrambling" a bit, I can see how the lower one is more enjoyable. How dark was the bottom of the canyhon?

I feel like I had the opposite experience. I did Upper Antelope Canyon in April in the morning (around 10:30am) and had a great experience. It was a sunny day so it was fairly bright for much of it, yes there were some dark parts, but much of it had good sunlight revealing really unique colours. Our group wasn't too big and we were kept a good distance apart from the other groups so it wasn't too crowded. I had low expectations going in, and was pleasantly surprised when I got there.

Glad you had a good time. Maybe it's the expectations. I had high expectations that weren't fulfilled but maybe with a lower expectation, I would feel different.

I came across this while planning a trip to antelope canyon from east coast. I am so glad that I have saved my vacation time and money from this tourist trap. It is probably just like picture perfect northern lights which you can only capture little with naked eyes. Thanks a lot for your honest opinions.

There is two tour offices direct at the entrance of lower Antilope Canyon, Ken and Dixie, both are not so expensive, $70.00 pp on June 2024, groups of 15 and separate from.each other by 15 minutes, you have enough time for pictures and in my opinion it totally worth tej Trip.

Thank you for this valuable & informative video. We were close by once & intended to go, but ran out of time. I can now put my disappointment aside. Thanks again. We really enjoy traveling with you folks & have added to our list because of your excellent videos.

Glad it was helpful! With the right expectations, it may still be a good visit. I just thought it was expensive for what you get.

Hi Ed, yes, in pictures. Like it was tailor made for Instagram. In person, while still beautiful, it's not the same.

We just went to the lower canyon at 10:15am at the end of May and we thought it was amazing! We visited Zion and Bryce as well and my family thought Antelope Canyon was the most visually stunning place we went to. I agree you don’t see all the different colors that you see in pictures (it’s really just different shades of light brown and orange), but it had great lighting at that time and was just gorgeous. I think upper is less forgiving if you don’t go at the right time of day - I wish you could have been on our tour!

      @JourneytoAllNationalParks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for the comment!! I do think the time of the day matters. The shape of the canyon walls, regardless of lighting and color are still very interesting and great to view. I do wish they would let us linger longer. Maybe I had too high of expectation from the photos on the colors.

Yes. I was still pretty, but just not as I expected based on the pictures. I knew it was going to be "crowded" and felt rushed.

We're actually headed to our tour to the lower side on the 18th. I hope NOT to be rushed and allow a little bit of time to consume and process my tour. Somehow, I feel like that will not go as I had imaged given your review. I'm prepping myself for disappointment already. Thanks for the honest review.

I hope you have a good visit today. Keep in mind my review was on the upper antelope canyon, not the lower one you are going to. Please let me know here in the comments on how it went.

Thank you very much for your honest review! We considered going, but felt that most of the stunning pictures were heavily edited. After hearing your review, I think we’re going to be disappointed as well. So we’ll be spending our time at other canyons we can take our time with.

I agree - It's important to linger and observe things up close and not be rushed.

I'm a hobbyist photographer and hiker who is going to spend a couple of months in SW Colorado, southern Utah and northern AZ later this year and I ruled out Antelope Canyon very quickly. I'm not going to pay close to $100 (or $200 to do both Lower and Upper) to be herded through like I'm at Disneyland. There are too many slot canyons (Buckskin Gulch/Wire Pass, Peekaboo Canyon, Little Wild Horse Canyon) I can hike and photograph with a tripod at my own pace, and there are plenty of out of the way places in the Page/Kanab area I can access with a high clearance 4x4 vehicle and avoid crowds.

Good choice. They no longer allow photographers to do their thing in either canyon. It interferes with hustling the tour groups through. They did "develop" another option, so-called Canyon X, which seems to give photographers part of the old experience, and for a smaller fee. I got my AC fix decades ago, before the tribe paid any serious attention to the idea of using the canyons as a tourist milking machine. Just to put my experience in perspective, the first time I was in Upper Antelope Canyon, we only have a driver to get us from the highway to the canyon, no guides supervising, and I shot my B&W on a tripod mounted view camera. No one cared. No one got much in the way.

Well I went there in 2006 and it was only 20 dollars. At that time it was worth it and not over-priced like now. Why is their greed so excessive? There should be laws against out of control greed. What happened to Native American spirituality?

Guess they will lower the price (or not raise it) if demand falls....
