How to do Cate's Clasp Weft Join for knitting

  • A special thank you to Cate Carter-Evans of infinitetwist.com/, the creator of this join for letting me share this information with you.
    This join is a great way to join a new yarn. It adds a little bulk but it's easy to do on the go!
    Please note: this works best for non-super wash yarns and that was Cate's intended use. I can only speak to my experience which is that it is holding up well with various yarn/fiber types, but use your own discretion.

    I have been wanting to knit some scrappy socks for some time now and have stayed away because of the 'weaving of many colors'. This really simplifies the whole thing and now I can feel confident in making those socks. Thank you very much!!!

    Hope you're feeling ok and Tim is feeling better so you can go to Yarndale. We're going on Saturday, so will miss you this year. ❤

    I am going to make scrappy socks for the first time and I was wondering how you join the yarn and then, boom! I found this video and it was you! Thanks for doing this.

    So quick and clever! Inspired to start my own scrappy socks.

    I was inspired to do this by seeing a Russian join but I didn’t want to try threading the yarn onto a needle and threading it back into itself. Also I don’t like the double thickness it creates so first I separate the strands and only use half the thickness which when doubled over just makes a normal thickness. If the strands are uneven, say 3 Then I’ll use two strands to double over to reduce the thickness. Later I go back and weave in the unused strands on the wrong side.

    I had no idea that his had a name. It's what I've been doing for 20 years and the wonderful thing is no weaving in!

      Well, it’s this knitter’s name for it. I learned it decades ago as a variation on the Russian join, only she leaves out the anchoring part, which, to me is the most important part, as it makes it less bulky.

    i love this - thank you! just wondering, as a follow-up, when you’re doing your scrappy work, do you just keep going from there as usual or do you do a jogless join? i can’t for the life of me find a join that doesn’t scream “here i am!”

      I only do what's shown in the video. You can sometimes see a bit of extra bulk there, but the change over is pretty seamless, I find! Play around with it. I bet you'll like it!

    What if you want the new color to begin in a very specific place, not randomly? I wonder if this technique can still be used somehow?

    • @thumbelinasmum
      @thumbelinasmum 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup. Knit to the color change spot. Insert a safety pin *through* the yarn where it exits the last stitch. I do about 4 stitches. Interlock the two yarns, making the old working yarn a smidge shorter than the pin indicates (because manipulating it stretches it a bit). Cut both tails about 5”, Russian join them both in, then knit, making sure to play with your tensions so the co,or change is still at the right spot. Russian join improved this a LOT. I’ve been doing this for about 20 years

    thats clever, but why wouldnt you measure it so the join happens right at the end of the round and not a little before? like if you had a pattern of stripes, that one would look a little off because it finishes/starts early. but great demonstration thanks

    • @downcellarstudio3576
      @downcellarstudio3576  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You definitely could. I use this mostly for scrappy projects where I'm not usually concerned about where the next color starts per say but you can definitely play around with it once you understand the concept.

  • @nancyhopkins6175

    Do you have to weave in the ends or do you just cut them?

    • @downcellarstudio3576
      @downcellarstudio3576  ปีที่แล้ว

      I cut them. If they're for me, I leave 1/4-1/2 inch of yarn inside the sock which makes it less likely to peek out towards the front
