Great song from an even greater group. ELP influences the world of prog rock music even today, having pushed the boundaries of that which is possible in music. Even this more mainstream tune enjoys a bit of prog flourish. We shan't see the likes of ELP again. RIP Keith and Greg.
I'm glad the cameramen or video editors finally figured out Emerson isn't just a back up musician so we got to see some of him too. For while there I was wondering where he was.
Saw them in Oslo later that year, in fact on Greg's birthday. The whole room gave him the happy birthday song and WHAT a night it was. Probably the best gig I've ever attended. So happy to have seen them IRL.
That's a good TV-performance... nice version with the 'Blues Variation' ('Pictures...') as short impro in 'Fanfare'. These boys were the best! Even in the 90s.
Me too! :) 1970 in Zurich (Switzerland) with 10! years with the school class, our teacher was a big fan of ELP.... I was a bit young for this brilliant music, but I got impressed about the "furniture packer show" (Keith Emerson) with his organ upside/downside.... I am still a great fan of ELP, and that´s easy because there is no real good music arround except some Jazz Fusion and some live acts with Industrial Rock (Metal)....
I saw these blokes several times, and then never fail to amaze me. As a drummer, I always considered Carl to be one of the greatest drummers in rock music.
I remember watching this when it originally aired. I was sick with the flu and sleeping on the couch. I stayed awake long enough to watch this then went right back to sleep. I thought it was a dream or something.
I remember watching this live! It was, I think, near the end of their 92 USA tour where I saw them at Radio City and in the Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. One of the greatest live acts to experience, ever!
Wow. How lucky you were to have ELP on TV like that there. We here in Britain hardly had anything like that. I can't ever remember them playing live on TV here. We had the occasional interview, but that was all. It always seemed to me that America appreciated Elp more. The media always slated Elp here back in the day and when they released black moon it started again, but the fans always spoke out here as all there live concerts here were always packed. You were indeed lucky men to be treated to live music on TV there. RIP Keith and Greg.
I was there Doug I was 20 years old at the time it was a great show. Also saw the 1974 Brain Salad Surgery tour at Kiel Auditorium. I've seen them every time they came to St Louis and even once in 1977 I traveled in a snowstorm to SIU Carbondale in Illinois which as you probably know is around 200 MI. Little did I know I was seeing the same show that was coming to St Louis anyway in 1978 and I wouldn't have had to travel that far in a snowstorm. Knowing myself at the time I probably would have done it anyway haha. That Carbondale show was not sponsored by KSHE and they would not give me any information on it. I had just heard about it Through the Grapevine and went for.
After watching their disastrous 2010 40th Anniversary Reunion performance at the High Voltage Festival which was heavily criticized, I had to watch this because this was ELP at their very best before Keith's hand injuries robbed him of his keyboard playing abilities. I was very lucky to see them in concert back in August of 1992 and they were fantastic. Greg Lake sounded great, Keith Emerson was a total beast behind the keys and Carl Palmer tore it up behind the drums. There were some good moments that stood out in their last performance at the 2010 High Voltage Festival even though there were some that suffered due to lack of rehearsal and Keith's hand injuries. There will never be another Prog Rock trio like ELP. But overall this is a great performance from 1992! Thanks for posting this.
I think it was a good performance in 2010, there were some issues (In Lucky Man, for instance, IIRC) but that was a given because it was a festival and they didn't have their own equipment and crew.
Not sure what the "disastrous" was all about, nor what the "heavily criticizing" people all were upset about. It all sounded very strong to me, the singing was topnotch (even if Greg Lake didn't look very healthy and fit anymore), and I'm not quite sure what Emerson and Palmer could have done much better. Maybe they didn't play songs people were expecting etc. no idea, but I didn't notice anything catastrophic. Hey, these guys weren't 25 anymore, but they still sounded very energetic. Deep Purple was more succesful in reinventing itself, keeping up releasing excellent albums, and finding a new and efficient style for Gillan's somewhat changing voice. ELP sounded like ELP in the 1970's, maybe not 9,5/10 anymore, but I'm happy with their "only" 9/10 score. th-cam.com/video/8ieVnIzFFJo/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B4%D1%80%D0%B2%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%BE%D1%88%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B2
ELP we're at their very best in the early 1970s. They were young energetic and extremely aggressive. Very technical. All maestro musicians. I've seen every concert that came to St Louis starting in 1971. I can tell you the best was the Brain Salad Surgery tour 1973 to 74. Those shows from the 80s 90s and 2000s didn't come close I saw those as well. If those shows were your first experience with ELP I'm certainly not putting them down. But old age and illness affects us all. Also the age of the long progressive rock pieces had long before came to an end unfortunately. I saw Journey Open up for ELP in 1976 at the time Journey we're an extremely progressive rock band not like that later day Steven Perry pop rock crap. As good as Journey was ELP blew them away now that says something about the quality of the pedigree to be in ELP.
I saw ELP in the early 70s then again in the 80s and in the early 90s And the 2010 performance just was not even close to their normal caliber. Technical difficulties or not having sufficient amount of time to prepare whatever the problem was it was very sad to see. These guys put on the most incredible concert ever, if I was going to recommend something for someone to watch that's never got to see them the California Jam would be a much better choice than the 2010 show that's for sure.
This is amazing. So tight. It's the year I saw them live in The Hague. Many friends came too and even my mum, then 66 years old, the age I have now. What a band. From now on I think we have to start referring to "Bass-player Greg Lake". All agreed?
dlanodrelda I’ve always said he was definitely up there in the top 10 voices of all time. When you heard that voice, u knew it was Greg Lake. ELP imo, was one of the greatest bands of all time too.

@@douggauzy6258 Doug I think you better recheck that I've heard that mix up before they sound similar but the Wide World of Sports theme is a different tune.
Great blues song! I was thinking how difficult it must be to do such awesome music being just a trio! Think..Greg is an awesome singer.. and plays bass, electric acoustic and harmonica..He can't do all of that in the same song! That is where Keith comes in..and a lot of pressure is on him to fill in on keys where other musicians could..
3 of the Best Musicians to ever walk this planet...!! RIP Keith and Greg.!! Did you hear the Tonight show band at 3:57?? They are playing some Billy Cobham.!! Kevin Eubanks is a great guitarist and band leader. I heard him also play some Mahavishnu Orchestra on the tonight show
Saw them 2wice on that tour! 1st leg Sacramento then the last leg nearly a year later in Reno where I waited for them after the concert and got their autographs Greg and Carl stepped onto a tour bus whilst Keith jumped into a silver Jaguar and drove down south Virginia away from the pioneer theater ❤ love them tons and forever
I never heard the first song but I heard the second. I did the sound for California Jam. I think there's going to be some drastic social change within the next few months because of the Caljam 35th Anniversay. Thanks!
Obviously Lake plays the bass, he also plays guitar quite well. The overdriven sound may well be a sampled sound on the synth Keith is playing - whatever, sounds good.
"And remember, folks, in 1975 (the year Brain Salad Surgury came out),...." Sorry, JonBenait06. You've got your dates a bit confused. BSS was released in 1973, and recorded during the months of June thru September of 1973. One of ELP's most memorable performances of BSS was at CalJam in April of 1974.

I saw ELPOWELL in 1986 in Lakeland, Fl. The concert is in iTunes under EMERSON LAKE AND POWELL. They also have a CD titled THE SPROCKET SESSIONS, is a recording of them rehearsing and it has the only recording of PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION with Cozy Powell. The music is very raw, you can hear Keith playing wrong notes and a couple of hesitating moments from all three of them. It’s really cool to hear them practice and trying new things. It’s a side of them that has never been recorded before.
@@tose917 I was very curious when ELPowell was launched: I knew ELP via my older brother and loved some of their work very much, other less, it was as mixed as my feelings about Yes. This is first time I've heard Paper Blood. I like it. Wiltern Theater? That was an old movie house. I guess it was renovated. If they are going to play (after living in L.A. in 70's) I would think Greek Theater would be likely venue.
I'm sure this was one of the few times, Marsalis ( pre- Eubanks I believe ) and the Tonight Show Band paid attention to, and were impressed by the quality & talent of the musical guest. Most of the artists who perform on these late night shows today are an embarassment to the profession. Sigh, sign of the times.
How so? It's awsome! Great lyrics, fantastic harmonica parts, catchy tune (it's actually a little rock-ish), and one HELL'UVA keyboard solo; I suppose the chorus is used a bit, but hey, at least it rhymes, and they still do their old stuff, evident of the fact that they played fanfare
Carl Palmer has a much more solid groove here, possibly due to his Asia connection, but also I hear more similarities between this ELP era and Touch and Go with Cozy Powell than I do with 70’s ELP.
I can't believe ELP was ever on the Leno show. This is awesome...
I love Greg Lake's voice. On of the finest in all of progressive rock.
Of ALL ROCK!!!!
