She never looks or feels like she's trying. It's guileless and effortless. That's, I feel, why she won. And this is from a guy who was GUNNING for Miss Korea hardcore when I watched this as a kid.
Zubizarreta Sarabia I have seen nothing of those comments, either from any of those judges or Cecilia Bolocco. I think they would’ve also corrected themselves if that was the case. In addition, if she had been expected to win, why did they not immediately correct her placement as 2nd Runner Up? Surely, once she was called, they would’ve had time to stop the proceedings. And her scores were consistently in third or fourth place throughout the semifinals.

If at that time they had rectified the error, do you know the number of people who saw the contest that year? the audience was the most important thing for the sales of the different sponsors. Obviously you have not heard of the statements of the judges because it is only until almost 30 years later that it is known that they were prohibited from talking about the event. It was impossible to remove the crown from Thailand, before the gaze of all Asia watching the contest. It would discredit the contest itself and the economic losses would be enormous. The truth will be out in no time, I'm sure.

Back then, all contestants did their hair and make up themselves. They were amazing. However, Thailand's evening gown was very modern and elegant. If you wear it today, it is still up to date and gorgeous.
Zuleyka Kel Gowns alone the only gown that could be worn today as is belongs to USA, Colombia her gown wore her , Venezuela lose the satellites on the shoulders & the big bow in the back presto it's classic, Thailand the shoulders dates it and the bodice would have to be restyled ,Miss Dominican Republic turn it to a bustier gown

It was too bad that during the semi-finals the judges changed their minds about her. Miss Hong Kong had the most unusual gown in that it is very ornate and is knee length with a flare on the bottom, something I rarely see in the years after...at least none as memorable.

Out of these gowns from the '88, I actually loved the gowns of Mexico, USA, Thailand, Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong. It's really pretty and simple that suits the style of the decade as well.

This is definitely my all time favorite of evening gown presentations, despite the disaster gown of Miss Venezuela. Miss Thailand was a very successful Miss Universe and made huge contributions. My heart still goes out to Miss Korea, there was just something about her. As I've said in other years. Almost any other year but this one, I think Korea would have taken it. 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 87, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94. 95. 96. 97. 98, 99. Honestly the list just goes on. On a side note, Norway did look out of place, I think the interview hurt her for the rest of the night. There is a video out there showing contestants years later, and let me tell you Bente Brunland looks quite elegant and amazing. Kind of like Joanna Gapinska from Poland the next year, sometimes what we see here, just isn't them in their best. Remember back then the contestants did their own hair, makeup etc. There's been lots of complaints that the asian countries made it because of where it was. First let me say, when the asian countries send representatives like that, it's no wonder they ruled this pageant. Second, I can't tell you how many times, I think women from Asian countries have be looked over because they aren't a "powerhouse", it's slightly changed but not by much. So it disturbs me when people say that this many Asian women wouldn't have made it. Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea absolutely no doubts. I personally liked Japan as well, perhaps that's one country I would have been on the fence about, but I would have loved to know who would have replaced her. I would have replaced Columbia and Venezuela before her.

Siempre he pensado que en esta fase del concurso se define la real MU. La que debiese tener buen gusto , después de todo será una embajadora de la moda .
Alan Thicke did a very commendable job hosting. The way he introduced the contestant's names and his pronounciation of some very difficult names was excellent. Miss Thailand did indeed rule this competition and she well deserved her win. But I would have been happy with Mexico. She was undeniably beautiful and had the X factor to win as well! She was much better than Lupita Jones who would win in 1991. Miss Korea was charming and exuded great poise. Miss Venezuela's gown was horrible and she was not the best from that country who usually sends great contestants. Miss Norway seemed sweet but lacked the extra something. Miss Japan and Hong Kong were charming as well, though I don't believe they were in the same league as Thailand and Korea. Dominican Republic's hair was a disaster and Colombia had a clumsy walk. Miss USA was lovely but was overshadowed by the Asians.

Japan's gown made her look really fat. But the evening gown competition is from the neck up. Japan was a true darling. Hong Kong 9.1, Dominican Republic 8.4, Mexico 9.0 (she walked way too fast), USA 9.5, Japan 9.5, Thailand 9.75, Korea 9.8, Colombia 8.0, Norway 7.5, Venezuela 7.1.

While I agree with the choice of Miss Thailand as the winner, it seems very evident that Miss USA was scored low on purpose in the final round since she didn't even make the final cut, but yet had the highest score of any of the original semi-finalists. She should have been at least 2nd runner up.
The interview portion of the pageant basically determined the outcome of the pageant. The judges already picked Thailand, Korea, Mexico and Japan in the final 5. The fifth spot was up in the air between Hong Kong, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Miss USA gave a typical Miss USA rehearsed interview and she never recovered from it afterwards.
I was there as Miss Nigeria and recall this moment , kids and song like it was yesterday . it brought me to tears . I'm 57 now 😊

Almost any other year but this one, I think Korea would have taken it. 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 87, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94. 95. 96. 97. 98, 99. Honestly the list just goes on. On a side note, Norway did look out of place, I think the interview hurt her for the rest of the night. There is a video out there showing contestants years later, and let me tell you Bente Brunland looks quite elegant and amazing. Kind of like Joanna Gapinska from Poland the next year, sometimes what we see here, just isn't them in their best. Remember back then the contestants did their own hair, makeup etc. There's been lots of complaints that the asian countries made it because of where it was. First let me say, when the asian countries send representatives like that, it's no wonder they ruled this pageant. Second, I can't tell you how many times, I think women from Asian countries have be looked over because they aren't a "powerhouse", it's slightly changed but not by much. So it disturbs me when people say that this many Asian women wouldn't have made it. Thailand, Hong Kong, Korea absolutely no doubts. I personally liked Japan as well, perhaps that's one country I would have been on the fence about, but I would have loved to know who would have replaced her. I would have replaced Columbia and Venezuela before her.
Korea would not have placed in the 90's. She certainly would not have won.

Para destacar que ese año predominó en el gusto del jurado la belleza de la mujer Asiática, pero considero que Tailandia se lo merecía, una niña sencilla, humilde e inteligente, cosa que hoy en los miss universo ya no se ve...como que marcó un hito en esa hegemonía de la ya tradicionales Venezuela, Usa, Puerto Rico, que pareciese que tenian contrato con la organización para estar entre las 10 y las 5 finalistas...en esos años realmente se elegian verdaderas mujeres con valores morales...

Alan Thicke did a very commendable job hosting. The way he introduced the contestant's names and his pronounciation of some very difficult names was excellent. Miss Thailand did indeed rule this competition and she well deserved her win. But I would have been happy with Mexico. She was undeniably beautiful and had the X factor to win as well! She was much better than Lupita Jones who would win in 1991. Miss Korea was charming and exuded great poise. Miss Venezuela's gown was horrible and she was not the best from that country who usually sends great contestants. Miss Norway seemed sweet but lacked the extra something. Miss Japan and Hong Kong were charming as well, though I don't believe they were in the same league as Thailand and Korea. Dominican Republic's hair was a disaster and Colombia had a clumsy walk. Miss USA was lovely but was overshadowed by the Asians.

Sin duda, de todos los miss universo que he visto éste es el mejor organizado... claro tenian que ser los chinos, sencillamente ESPECTACULAR, esos escenarios mágicos, sí que saben vender su producto... aparte de que en cuanto a tecnología ya en ese año se empezaba a vislumbrar lo que sería la tecnología 20 años después de eso, una transmisión impecable, y no podía faltar la belleza de la mujer latina representada en esa espectacular despedida de Cecilia Bolocco, natural y espontanea.
Tiene toda la razón, este ha sido concurso mejor organizado con ese dragón y las mariposas al final, y el más alegre el de 1989 en Cancuan México

While I agree with the choice of Miss Thailand as the winner, it seems very evident that Miss USA was scored low on purpose in the final round since she didn't even make the final cut, but yet had the highest score of any of the original semi-finalists. She should have been at least 2nd runner up.
The interview portion of the pageant basically determined the outcome of the pageant. The judges already picked Thailand, Korea, Mexico and Japan in the final 5. The fifth spot was up in the air between Hong Kong, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Miss USA gave a typical Miss USA rehearsed interview and she never recovered from it afterwards.
