It's not all termite species that have such insanely high fecundity. If I am not mistaken, that figure is for Macrotermes sp., Probably obessus. Some termite like drywood only produce like 3-5 for the first year of mating. My experience in breeding dampwood termite in petri dish only yielded like 20 or so individuals after like 2 months...
At 6:20, you say that co2, oxygen, and methane undergo osmosis to exit the termite mound. What you meant to say was diffusion, as osmosis is a specific term used to describe diffusion happening with water. Anytime something that is not water travels from high concentration to low concentration, it is diffusion.
Gases can undergo osmosis. You are right that anytime something goes from a high concentration to a low concentration is diffusion, osmosis is a form of diffusion that uses a partially permeable membrane.
I believe the point here is that the air inside the mounds would be so "polluted" with CO2 and methane that it would have a radically different makeup from atmospheric air. The movement of those particles through the membrane would be considered osmosis since diffusion only applies to the movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration throughout one medium. Might be wrong though my brain is pretty limp
@@casimir40ksolomon74 osmosis is specific to a semipermeable membrane, but diffusion can happen with a semipermeable membrane as well. I have a background in cell bio and I was taught to use osmosis only when referring to water. However, in situations that are not specifically related to cell biology, osmosis may be a more loose term.
I think they're trying to experiment with different styles using this channel. RLL still has it's more serious tone, while this one is testing out a style with more jokes sprinkled in
Fun fact: some termites are also farmers. They grow fungus that feed on the woody material, sprouting caps of mushroom from the mounds that can be harvested and eaten.
Leafcutter ants also rely on this method, though they use a different fungi. There's also some ants that have developed husbandry, basically they have aphids that they protect and move around while also regularly milking them. It's frankly really interesting to realize just how many animals on the planet are doing stuff that humans thought themselves the only masters of for so long.
