@ couldn’t agree more with it being hard to put yourself out there. It took us a long time to finally set our TH-cam channel up. My biggest regret in the start is caring too much what people think. The internet is scary and not always the kindest of places but I’ve found it’s always a place the good outweighs the bad. I have visited Thailan quite a few times over the years. Before Covid I asked my sister to come with me and then we would go to Cambodia to visit Ankor Wat. I really liked the vibe of Siem Reap! Yes, I binged watched Paddy Doyle's youtube channel during Covid... It made me feel connected to Thailand and my friends there. So glad you made the move to Siem Reap!! The cost of living in the U.K. and the U.S. is ridiculous.....and just the overall stress. Hoping to move to Thailand this coming year..... I retired 4 years ago in Sydney put all my stuff in storage to go travel for 12mths, here I am 4 years later and still meandering through Europe and Asia, it’s way cheaper than being holed up in the same place 365 days a year.
I’m heading back to Sydney now in 3 weeks for a year to do a farewell lap sell all my stuff and divide my time between Asia and Spain for as long as my health permits.

So bloody unfair and spiteful. Personally I am not sexist or racist, we are all human beings who should all behave in accordance with the same values. For Cambodia & TH, UK pensions are not indexed. In SE Asia, only PH has this agreement with the UK. Pls see my longer post to Sonia abt this (if state pension matters to you). In SE Asia, only PH 🇵🇭 is indexed for UK pensions. Other indexed countries are in the Caribbean & the EU. If that matters to you, see my longer (individual) post to Sonia. Good luck!

I think you are finally finding the boots of your feet ?
Cambodia is the one country in SoutheastAsia where the visas for foreigners are cheap and as a foreigner you can buy property in Cambodia as well…if you’re looking for something like buying a house or condo. In Cambodia it’s still cheaper and you can rent a house like Airbnb.

@TSUK213 NHS doesn't work, you pay national insurance contributions thinking you are covered and if it comes when you need help you must go privately. It's my personal experiences few times including operations that should have been done by nhs I had to go privately. I don't see NHS as positive in the UK but rather money taking institutions that doesn't do what we are paying for. There are insurance companies that cover almost everything including cancer treatments and they are cheaper than what average person pays in national insurance contributions.

Apart from that a fab country this time did Phnom Penn, Kampot and Koh Rong Island - all special places in their own way. Hello Sonja. Yes, it's never an easy road is it? I utilized the services of IPS for apartment hunting, as I believe you did, and I am now settled in nicely here in Wat Bo. Nice efficiency apartment, $200 US per month, includes internet. I just got my 1st electric bill, $17. $17! For the month of December. To be fair, I haven't used the aircon yet, haven't needed to. Private balcony allows my nasty cigar habit, without bothering anyone. So, in summary, I'd like to thank you for being at least partially contributory in my decision to come here. (He had just bought the insurance then was hospitalised a few days later). The other one had been on Safety Wing for many months & his hospital stay (hernia surgery + recuperation) was fully paid for by the insurance.
It may vary with the country/ hospital, though. Some smaller hospitals don't accept the insurance upon admittance to the hospital (they don't have the capacity/ don't want to do the paperwork). You may have to pay out of pocket then claim reimbursement.

Hi Sonia. Thanks for sharing your "origins" story. It's always nice to know the background of the vlogger. Btw is your 3-month lease up? Do you plan to extend it or move to another city/ country. Congrats on 3k subs!
Btw, since you're from the UK, I assume that you'll receive a state pension in 10 years or so. For Cambodia (or TH, VN, Indonesia), the UK pensions are not indexed. You won't get the yearly increase in pension if you stay in those countries. In SE Asia, only PH 🇵🇭 has that agreement w/ the UK. I've a friend who's planning to retire in PH due to this reason (indexed pension).
You may want to check out PH just in case. If you do, I suggest the cities of Baguio (mountain area & near San Juan, La Union beaches), Cebu, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo & Roxas. In Dumaguete, there are lots of retired expats (mostly men). It's not a place I would choose (it's been gentrified), but you can check it out for yourself.
Another option is to stay/ retire in a non-indexed country like Cambodia. Then after 4 or 5 yrs, go to a pension-indexed country (like PH, Romania or the UK!) and stay there for >6 months. You'll get the pension increase, as well as the difference in pension for the previous years. Then when you leave that country, pension gets frozen again. Rinse & repeat every 4 or 5 yrs. I don't know the viability or legality of this (heard this from another vlogger), so do your research.
Good luck, safe travels and happy new year! 🎉🍾🥂

The vlogger said (he's TH-based) that if you live in a non-indexed country like TH or Cambodia, he suggested to do the trip (to an indexed country or the UK) every 4 or 5 yrs. By then, the "back pay" you'll get from the difference in pension will pay off the airfare & possibly your stay in PH, Romania or other low-cost indexed country. Safe travels & happy vlogging!

You can't compare a $130 health insurance Policy to the NHS, the same cover or be it with many exceptions would cost around $600 a month in Asia

I’m sure it would , but I don’t have that. For the last year I’ve just had safety wing health insurance. As I said throughout the video, this is my personal experience for now and I expect yours will be different. I’m here on a 6 month visa. So for now it’s home and I am loving every single second of my time here. If I was to make the move permanently I expect things would look different. But for now it works for me. What health insurance company do you use or recommend in Cambodia 🇰🇭 and while long term travelling to different countries? I would be very interested to hear all about it from someone who knows more. 🙏 Thanks for your comments. 😃

@@nanwithabackpack you may want to check the latest Cost of Living vid of "For Riel" channel. They also live in SR and in that vid, they mentioned their insurance company. I know of 2 vloggers who've used SafetyWing. One was accepted outright (bigger hospital in capital city) - he didn't pay anything & insurance covered all (hernia surgery + hospital stay).
Another vlogger, he just bought the insurance then a few days after he was hospitalised due to covid. He was in a smaller hospital, smaller city. He had to pay out of pocket (at first) then file for reimbursement. He was reimbursed.
I think for foreign insurances (not based in the country you're in), coverage could be hit or miss. It depends if the hospital has the capacity to do the paperwork (and they'll accept your insurance outright). If the hospital is smaller, sometimes they don't/ won't accept your foreign insurance. You'll have to pay first then reimburse later. Buyer beware...

I have heard nothing but good things so far from safety wing, I'm just glad I have not had to put them to the test!!!!! It does make me cross when you have been with them for a year and nothing has changed and no claims and the price increases so much. But I suppose that's like not fair sometimes!!!!!!

Hello Sonia (did I spell your name right?). I'm thinking of renting my house out and going travelling. I travelled South East Asia in 1992. Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Best year of my life. I have people close to me who I trust very much and they are not very positive about my intentions to travel, "the house will get wrecked" that sort of thing. I have recently discovered your channel and you are very inspiring. I would be extremely grateful if you could pass on some 'advice'.

@@martindoyle5355 hi it’s Sonja with a j !!!! I was renting my flat but if I had a house I would have definitely looked into rented it out. I met a lady last year who rented her house out for 12 months while traveling. She from what I heard had a good experience with it. It’s a difficult situation and one I am afraid only you can answer. I would definitely look into it and ask lots of questions. I think you can get a company to organise it all for you. Although obviously they will take a cut from the rent. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of much help with this. I wish you luck with your plans and hope you get to head out to Asia again soon. Thanks for your message. 🥰🇰🇭

I visited Siem Reap some time ago and found the people very friendly polite and respectfull but a poor country . I also at the same time visited Vietnam but much prefer Siem Reap. It would be a great place to live with internal Asian flights to other countries if you need medical issues . I think we all need a sea change later in our life it brings adventure and accept and embrace change good luck everyone if you go on that journey.

Nice video. You didn't mention cost of visa etc. often this can be quite considerable if staying long term. I'm not sure if you are.
