Part 1 of our first EV road trip series in 2024. We take a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus on a winter skiing trip to Banff in Alberta, Canada. How has your EV winter driving experience been so far? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Idea for video I would like to see. Using magic dock location as start and end location. You drive both of your cars over the same course and speed. Say one hour. Start both at 80%. Then measure how much electricity is used to refill each back to 80%. Giving true average consumption.

Great idea. Thanks for this. I was always thinking of doing something similar so will need to do it soon!

Very good idea for a video. Would love to see a test like this.

Remember to precondition the battery before you drive and you will be more efficient! This is why Tesla system for preconditioning is still the best.

Totally agree. Precondition the battery and you will have a better road trip experience for sure!

fyi: Standard range Tesla's use LFP battery which are worse in the winter, compared to the long range (nickel/magn) chemistry

No matter what kind of locomotion, winter tires transform the vehicle. I always get a seperate set on dedicated wheels, and get them narrower on smaller wheels, with matching diameter to the stock tire (or a smidge taller). My Bolt euv can get 500kms in the summer, but only 280-300kms in the winter.

Your Bolt EUV winter range is similar to my Kia Soul EV. Excellent point about winter tires, I bought a good set for the Kia and they are wonderful and loss of range is minimal.

Using an EV for a road trip forces you to take a break and makes it more enjoyable and safer. No more of those point A to point B trips with no stopping.
15:31 I would imagine he is a Canadian in his natural environment.

Indeed. Many charging locations are also in places we would never explore if we were just driving from point A to B in a ICE car. Haha yes that was a Canadian in his natural environment.

During deep winter I did experience range loss but always managed to precondition the car before driving so that loss wasn’t too extreme. People who complain about how little range they have never precondition their EVs.

Totally agree. Range loss happens in all cars during winter but EV drivers can lessen the impact as much as possible by preconditioning their cars.
