Man, this is one of the greatest examples of circular breathing demonstrated so beautifully by Harry Carney. That was true artistry. I play this song as a set closer, not nearly as well as the Duke and his men, but I keep trying. For KG!!!

no doubt, and it was the Duke's genius who even thought about voicing the baritone right out front of the horn section...i mean, who does that? but wow could harry coaxe some sweetness outa that bari
Possibly the best bari sax solo ever played. If you close your eyes, he sometimes sounds like an alto and then sometimes sounds like a tenor. From subtone to throat growl, with impeccable taste, he even throws in circular breathing at the end! WOW!
Without a doubt, the finest baritone sax solo ever recorded. I wish I could have witnessed the initial reaction of Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber & Steve Kupka after they heard this for the first time! It's a shame that the bari sax is such an underappreciated instrument for so long---When I bring mine on stage, people still ask me what the hell it is!
This was a revelation. And I’ve heard a ton of Ellington. What tone Carney had! Duke cared about two things. Swing and tone. You needed both to play in his band. Such elegant and timeless music. The Soul wrenching lyrics are always in mind as he okays.
I've listened to Duke since about 5 years ago, and the amount of people from my generation discovering Duke due to Big Mouth makes me happy to be a musician, and a huge fan of him. To you Duke, The one that got me into Jazz.
Another one of Duke's great songs, Sophisticated Lady. Harry Carney compliments this haunting melody with one of the most "beautifully expressive" instrumental solos I have heard. Dan Damon (career musician)
I listen to this track about 20 times a month or so. I love this moment in time. I wish I could have experienced it in person. What a performance and what a group of wonderful talent. I can't get enough. In heaven I would love to meet all of these guys.
@@geraldjohnson4013... You put it as it should be put. One of my favourites is actually Canadian, LOL... genius Oscar Peterson but this drummer is American... and he is a genius... Dave Weckl.
Me too! :D I just finished the book yesterday , and now i'm taking time to listen all the quoted musicians.Years ago i also heard about Duke Ellington in the intro of the movie The science of sleep by Michel Gondry, but this is actually the first time i'm listening his stuff.
I never really listened to jazz and never really listened to Duke Ellington and then big mouth came along and I started to listen to him and I realized that I always heard his music and never realized it was him.
Duke ellington es la cuna de mi Nostalgia, sus composiciones me llegan al alma y me hacen recordar cosas que nunca viví en el pasado, me pone realmente melancólico
>>This sax "solo" is simply incredible. Harry is so smooth and phrases so sweetly that on at least 2 occasions I let out a noticeable sigh. The agility he has on this Bari is uncharacteristic of the instrument itself., he really shows us how it is done here. That 24bar long whole note shows that circular breathing isn't for digeridoo players only. So you see that this vid was so impressive that I took the time to comment on it. WOW !!! What virtuosity and control.
Thanks very much Ladies and Gentlmen for such a warm welcome. Your very Beautiful, very Sweet, very Gracious, very Generous, and all the kids in the band want you to know that we do love you madly!!! I love you Duke💖.

Msflamingo2008 Circular breathing. Mark Pender of CONAN's Basic Cable Band does it on a weekly basis (as part of the show's warm-up). It takes a bit of practice.
I’ve always liked jazz, but I love that Big Mouth introduced me to Duke. He’s now one of my favorite musicians. Love all of his songs: “Take the A Train”, “In a Sentimental Mood”, “My Little Brown Book”(one of my favorites), “Haupe”, “Satin Doll”, “Mood Indigo” and many others!🙂

After the full episode around his life, yeah it was funny and there were a lot of jokes but I love how they went over his song for a sophisticated kind of girl, listening to it was lovely and I had to look into his music more 💚
Amen Hutzjohn. Duke Ellington remains my all-time favorite big band jazz arranger, composer, pianist, band leader! As you said it best, genius is the only apt word to describe the Duke!
Jlmusicfan57 dont you just wish you could go back in time and see the Duke live. I believe this and Mood Indigo are two of best jazz songs ever written.
That was Johnny Hodges. Duke's 1st Alto and soloist for around 30-40 years and one of many great sax players to ever live. But yea, I guess he should've payed attention 😒

Ending on a ballad is brave! Are you or anyone in your band (unless you’re a solo act of course!) baritone players?
wonderful
Remembering my grandmother today today is her birthday & the Duke was her favorite performer & she was a sophisicated lady !
Hello Queen, How are you doing?
+ R.I.P.
Harry CARNEY had the most beautiful sound ever on a baritone , by far !!!!
no doubt, and it was the Duke's genius who even thought about voicing the baritone right out front of the horn section...i mean, who does that? but wow could harry coaxe some sweetness outa that bari
Possibly the best bari sax solo ever played. If you close your eyes, he sometimes sounds like an alto and then sometimes sounds like a tenor. From subtone to throat growl, with impeccable taste, he even throws in circular breathing at the end! WOW!
And the circularly breathed note sounds like a viola 🤯
he makes the baritone a legitimate solo instrument. something I don't think it was even designed for.
And often it sounds like a cello. I knew Harry Carney well; the kindest man that ever walked the earth. This shones through in his playing.
Without a doubt, the finest baritone sax solo ever recorded. I wish I could have witnessed the initial reaction of Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber & Steve Kupka after they heard this for the first time! Yes, bari sax always be an underrated instruments by people who really don't appreciate music.
This was a revelation. And I’ve heard a ton of Ellington. What tone Carney had! Duke cared about two things. Swing and tone. You needed both to play in his band. Such elegant and timeless music. The Soul wrenching lyrics are always in mind as he okays.
Not too mention Hamiet Bluiett late of the World Saxophone Quartet (may he rest in peace with all the other great bari players).
Good old Duke is one of the best jazz Legends, when not the only legend in the whole jazz world😊
So good and soo nostalgic 🫠😊
Amazing circular breathing by baritone saxophonist Harry Carney.
A minute and 21 seconds! :)
wow how do you breathe circular
I was scared he would pass out.....
Carney’s amazing circular breathing starts about 2:21. Listen also for Duke’s beautifully understated piano obbligato.
Anybody else annoyed by it?
I like how the comments are divided by People who genuinely like his music and kids doing homework from big mouth xD
