    Beautiful box - i would call it a carved box. The figured maple was lovely. As you want through fitting the hinges i thought that ultimately the 45 degree angle you planed to stop the hinges binding would have stopped the lid opening at 90 degrees, so the stopped Brusso hinges were not strictly necessary. However, relying on those planed edges may have put too much stress on the screws

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John. Good point about the hinge stops. I didn't anticipate that they would bind ahead of time, however, with that in mind I think I will try using regular hinges on a future project.

    • @johnc6440
      @johnc6440 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - worth a try with ordinary hinges. The Brusso hinges are not cheap!!!

  • @willemkossen

    So beautiful! Its a box for sure... i tend to think the cutting away of the inside is the thing that makes a bandsaw box just that. So you might call this a hybrid jigsaw box. But who cares what it’s called, its one of the prettiest boxes i ever saw. How many hours of work went into making it? Your niece has a pretty special uncle!!!

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You, Willem! I can't say how many hours went into this, but it was a lot! I started by building a prototype to test the hinges and get a feel for the shape. Making templates, and learning new things as I went along really added to the time involved.

    Your Hybrid thought is perfect. For your S shape letter, I would have cut it out of a solid piece of ash on the BS, then sanded to shape and then ebonize the wood with Carbacho bark tea, and vinegar with iron. Really a solid black and inexpensive to do. Then you could glue your maple veneer to it. Nice project and your commentary is excellent.

    Great job. I think its a box made with a bandsaw , but not a bandsaw box.> I have been a furniture maker for 54 years . I love the quilted maple. Probably my favorite wood . I live in Hawaii so I have to shop all over to get it. Where did you get that bilit from? I buy all I can get my hands on. I agree that Brusso make the best hinges availble. I only use Brusso on my Projects. Again great work. Id have to charge between $1500 to $2000 for that box consideringthe Quilted maple and the labor invested for this beautiful box.

      Hi Zale, thanks for the nice comments about the jewelry box. The wood is Big Leaf Maple, sometimes it's called Western Maple. The figure in this particular piece of wood is called "Quilted". So, quilted big leaf maple. It's amazing wood and not as difficult to work with as some other highly figured woods.

  • @wb_finewoodworking
    @wb_finewoodworking 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That wood grain is phenomenal! The design of the box is outstanding. As to what “kind” of box it is I have no idea. Quite frankly I don’t care what “kind” of box it is. It’s beautiful.
    Yes, it was cut with a bandsaw but bandsaw boxes tend to have drawers and your box doesn’t. You also glued in a laminated divider. Typically band saw boxes have a spot where the bandsaw is used to cut out the interior and the spot where the blade went through the side has to be glued somehow. You could have done that by cutting out the interior of your box with the bandsaw instead of using a router. By cutting out the interior that way coming in from both sides, perhaps somewhere around the hinges, you could have left the “s” shape in the middle.

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point about incorporating the "S" shape into the initial block of wood. I might try that on a future project.

    It is a beautiful keepsake box.
    That wood is on fire with shatoiance, beautiful figure. Love the "S" divider. Too bad her name didn't start with an "R", would have made for a four section divider.

    Charlie, "When is a box not a box?" When it's a piece of Art! Looks like all those hours of education with some masters rubbed off! LOL! The touching up of the mistake is what a pro does. You did that well my friend. I'm sure you're going to want to borrow this for the show in spring as I don't know how much real time this took. And you found your own answers in making this. The bandsaw is a flexible tool and you used it well. More than a hybrid my friend it is a piece of Art! Do you plan on making more? Nice to see you excited about making something.

    If you had cut out the two interior areas with a bandsaw instead of a jigsaw then I would call it a lidded (is that a word?) bandsaw box, since traditionally they have drawers. But I think this is more just a sculptural box. I totally understand why you didn't though, a kerf is a kerf, even if it's a thin bandsaw blade. It's gorgeous though, and I love the subtle personalization and attention to detail with the hinges. Just found your channel, new subscriber! =)

    • @JackbenchWoodworking

    You know my daughter’s name’s is Courtney Nicole so for her to open a jewelry box with her initials CN on the inside would be just awesome......ex specially from made from her dad......

      HI Mike, I'm sure that your daughter would love that. I am working on another custom jewelry box now for someone whose initials are EG. It's similar to the one in this video except it is taller and there's a tray when you open the lid. I put an E in the tray. When you remove the tray you see that there is another smaller box inside the larger box. The lid on the smaller box has a G in it. I will probably post a video about it in a few months.

    Amazing figure in the wood! Amazing piece of craftsmanship and a true artist knows how to hide mistakes! Great work and a well-done video! I'd say it's a hybrid bandsaw box btw...Love to get my hands on some of that maple, too!

      Thanks John! I was lucky to find such a nice piece of maple!

    Yeah, who cares. How about the woodworker, I guess I'm not very good, because from my scale of comparison, this is really pretty out there. I like to think about building a box I've seem. Nope, natta, not in this lifetime, don't think so, mmmm, No, I don't think I would even think about trying this. Maybe a slightly reminiscent 2nd to that. But this!? Don't think so.

      Thanks Gene, you're too kind. Actually, the basic box wouldn't be that difficult if you omit the "S" shaped divider and the concealed hinges.

    I don't care what you call it, Charlie, but it is stunning!

    Stunning! I don't think it would qualify as a pure bandsaw box in my opinion because of the dishing of the lid with the router or the use of the jigsaw. You have however created a beautiful piece of art. Well done

    Bandsaw box/hybrid box doesn’t matter. It’s just a stunning box. That’s a beautiful piece no matter what it’s called. Thank you for sharing!

    Box and wood is beautiful. I have a question ...#1 why not cut an S on the bandsaw?.
    Doesn’t seem to me that this is a bandsaw box of any sort. Great tip on hiding the crack.

      Thanks Belinda. Good question about the S. I was hoping to have the grain of the wood follow the shape of the S. I thought bending the wood would give me that effect. Of course, bending didn't work at all and in actual practice the veneer plies didn't show after I finished it. I am working on a similar box now with the letter "E". I cut and carved the E out of a solid piece of bloodwood and it was not only easier, but it looks great. Your instincts were right on about this one.

    Wowzers!, hybrid because it wasn't all cut in the band saw.

    Absolutely fantastic box ! the stock used was spectacular. I wouldn't call it a bandsaw box though, rather a box made using tools including a bandsaw.

    Charlie, that's a gorgeous piece of wood and you did it justice with this box. Looks fantastic. As to what type of box, I'd not call it a bandsaw box but what you call it does not matter - it really is beautiful
