  • in today's episode of farming life at la forge, we will be taking my Salers to the mart, we'll show some of the cattle prices here in France and also bring you on a tour around. I'll also be tipping up the la forge sign at the head of the road.

    It’s always interesting to see foreign markets and different ways - thank you for filming it. Hope you were happy with the prices this time and made a euro or two 👍 From the look of the steers, they were out of dairy type Salers and not beef type Salers. Whenever I have seen the French livestock vans I have always smiled/laughed - it just seem such a strange way of moving stock. Shame about your sign, but the important bit is the artwork that went into it. You obviously have artistic talent.
    Did you know (it could be my iPad of course) that some of the video is in reverse and so the sign was backwards; plus Declan looked as if he was driving in the Uk -- on the wrong side 🤣🤣🤣
    Nice to see you both as father and daughter.
    Take care, stay safe, be Happy and wishing you all a very happy Easter.
    Richard xx
    ps. Any Second hand locking yoke cattle feeders out their. I am in need of 3 x 15ft sections - for about 15 cows.

    Would you expect a better price for animals without horns? I know store cattle locally are more popular if they don’t have any antlers. 🙂

    The Salers have become quite popular here in the UK as a docile, low input cow, which is what we need for a low carbon footprint.

    When i worked in France they were pressing a button to bid last person to press bought them,when the bosses calves came in the boss nearly glued himself to the button and I taught ireland was the only place that had dodges

    • @FarmingLifeatLaForge

    • @trig5454
      @trig5454 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the 'mart' closest to me (Auction barn: Ontario Canada) the bidding is done by a wink or a nod or a subtle wave of a finger or hand. The auctioneer acknowledges your bid and sometimes there are spotters to make sure no bids are missed. When the bidding stops the auctioneers will declare the animal/item sold and make sure he/she has your contact information. All done on the honour system but seems to work.

    Glad you made a sale this time around. Instead of a varnish finish, how about epoxy? It should last longer than varnish.

    • @FarmingLifeatLaForge
      @FarmingLifeatLaForge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Epoxy would be better against the weather but it cant be painted on like varnish, it has to be done in a mold and takes a long time to set. Wouldn't look right in my opinion

      Yes but to buy charolais would be 3times the price and wouldn't have as good a margin. Also no one sells charolais calves or "fluffies" maybe the odd one here or there but that's it :)
