  • This is a big day for the project! In this one, I start and run the engine in my 1953 NSU Max Motorcycle for the first time since 1977. That's 45 years ago. We are the first people to heart it run since the year before I was born. Pretty cool, I think. Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

It's always a great moment when a motorcycle that was dead comes back to life. Great!

    Fantastic!
It is amazing to fire up an engine that hasn't run in a long time.
Thanks for sharing the occasion with us.
Can you hear us all cheering and saying "Way to go!"?
You are doing an outstanding rebuild on a very unusual machine and teaching us a lot of lessons along the way. Thanks mate!

That was great, I fell your joy. I have been there myself. That is such a great feeling, Congrtulations. Not to mention the ignition, that was real unscripted. Great stuff

I have restored many NSU Max and there is so much I could correct you on, but..... why should I. I'm always happy when I see someone lovingly fixing up an old Max. The Max has been ahead of its time for 53. Imagine, 250cc, 17 PS and a speed of 120 km/h! BMW 250ccm 9.5 PS and 90 km/h, Zündapp 200ccm, 6.5/7 PS and 85 km/h..... NSU was a racer. At this time it was important that a motorcycle could tow a sidecar and with 17 PS it was no problem. But the Max was not cheap compared to its competitors. Anyway.. nice work ( Just .... get the original exhaust😂 )

Thank you for the kind words. I am really enjoying the NSU. I’m not sure if you are in the US but NSU parts here are rare and expensive. I did find an original muffler but the seller wanted $1500USD for it and I just couldn’t afford it. There are some replica mufflers in Germany but with shipping and customs, would also be more than $1k to get. Maybe a goal for the future?

That's perfectly fine. I was just kidding you. Obviously the original exhaust is expensive in America and the one you have on works just as well. NSU actually made an NSU Max only for the American market. It was called "Scrambler" and was only available in America.

Sounds awesome! Thats a GREAT feeling - I collect and restore old Ducati singles, I know exactly that same face & smile!! EXCELLENT - those old remote-float carbs are fiddly at best, getting it to settle down and Idle reliably will be the next big hurdle-
Do you know the history of the bike? has it ever run where you are living now (as far as State/Geographical Area/Elevation) those old carbs are sensitive to say the least, if it was jetted to run last time from a city that was a hundred or so higher or lower than elevation above sea level that youre at now it'll need some jetting and possibly a slide? Cant wait for the next video!

I don't know much about its history. I bought it from a seller out in eastern New Jersey but he'd pulled it out of a barn somewhere as part of an estate sale so it really could have come from anywhere. I'm sure I'm going to have to jet it for my elevation here in Denver. Hopefully no need for a new slide, though, as those seem to be quite rare for this carb. Bing 2/26/55.
