  • Since going to the Detective Bureau, I have had to make a conscious decision as to what gear I wear and don't wear. At the same time, I didn't want to compromise the gear I carry. So I put this very quick video showing what I carry and why.

Thank you for posting! I’m in the hiring process for a bailiff position with my local municipal court, have never worked a suit and tie assignment before, coming from the jail, and also have not received much guidance on how to carry everything. We have to buy all our own gear, I’m currently running a Glock 19 with a Streamlight, and the ASP cuffs. The other stuff you mentioned was super helpful, as soon as I get the offer letter I’m going to start shopping.

I was assigned to the Robbery Squad as a detective in November 1974. I wore the required coat & tie, carried my issued Colt Detective Special revolver, six spare rounds, cuffs & a blackjack. While backing up a uniform officer I became engaged in a gunfight w/three armed robbery suspects, emptied my gun twice and ended the fight w/a blackjack. Lesson learned, carry enough ammo for the fight that may be coming your way.

Hey you might wanna check out Tactically suited. Those guys custom make suits specifically for law enforcement, executive protection staff, and private security. Their suits are meant to help carry everything you need to do your job.
But my gear is pretty much the same when I'm wearing a suit (one of the aforementioned tactically suited suits) but I carry a couple extra things. I carry a Sig P365 X Macro 2 spare mags in a custom made shoulder holster, a small baton like that ASP you have, small flashlight, I have the ASP Ultra pluss hinge style cuffs instead of the chain cuffs you have though. And a small can of OC. Spray. Also carry the most important things like my pen and paper and my phone.

Cool setup broski. I'm not a detective, but I work for a college campus PD and we wear a "soft" uniform which is a polo and 5.11 tactical pants. We are authorized to wear a full duty rig if we wanna, but most of us just wear a setup similar to yours. I wear a Galco Combat Master OWB leather pancake style holster along with a Galco MFP (Mag, Flashlight, Paddle) which holds a spare pistol mag along with a Surefire G2X flashlight. As for cuffs, I just tuck them into my waistband at the 5 o'clock position. My belt of choice is the Wilderness 1.75 inch with the super stiff CSM insert. I'm seriously looking into putting a light on my Glock 19 and I'm really digging that Aker belt slide holster of yours. Sorry, but I'm not a paddle holster kinda guy. Thank you for your service brother. CY6.

Thanks for the info, that holster company is exactly what I've been looking for. One thing you left out is footwear, hoping you can provide some insight on that. Thanks!

Hey brother, why don’t you carry smith and Wesson 100 cuffs? I’ve used them for the longest until just now I got asps. And I don’t like nylon either. I love leather but I just haven’t made the investment to get full leather yet.

Why not just wear a detective style belt over your dress belt? It will treat the wear on dress pants better and will hold up in a “tactical” situation.

I think he’s trying to say, wear a sturdy gun belt (your choice) over your normal belt thus holding all your gear on that.

Why do you HAVE to carry boring cuffs and not the good ones by ASP?
Also why do you care about how the handcuff holster looks? Literally nobody is going to see it unless you are cuffing a guy and even then nobody cares about how it looks or style. It's not a fashion show.
Also, how do you close that ASP baton so easy? Did you just not flick it out super hard? I always have to hit it hard on the cement or something to make mine close. Mine is 26 inches long though.
