    I've enjoyed and followed your 'Pastor Paul' (as he is affectionately referred to in our house) videos from day one. Thank you so much for your efforts! I cannot recall him ever mentioning how he deals with late Spring freezes that would jeopardize his fruit harvest. Do you know if he has any techniques he uses? If not, could you ask him next trip out to his place? He is so dependent on his apple harvest that I can't imagine him losing a year's crop. Thanks again!

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      He doesn't do anything. (Maybe prays). Even if there is a late frost, he will still get some apples which would be enough for him. Maybe the tours get a few less though.

      1StepAt ATime Paul's garden is very established and thick therefore it generates heat really well during colder temperatures.

    Thank you for making these videos, one day I stumbled on one of paul's tours on your channel and I watched it. In amazement I became closer to god. Also I'm into film editing and production and it think you should invest in a lavalier mic if you get the chance, so you can hear paul's voice over whatever going on around him. God bless!

      Thanks for watching, I'm glad you got something out of my videos. For the past year or so, I have been putting a mic on Paul. As the description says, he started this class early and when Paul gets going, it's hard to pin him down to put a mic kit on him.

    hello, thank you for the video. did he mention how to prune cherry trees?
    how do you prune a cherry tree? cherries grow on older branches dont they?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul cannot find a cherry tree that will stay small so, he does not prune them the same way. There is one cherry tree on the edge of the orchard near where people park. It has been there since I have known Paul and I have never seen him prune it. I have seen him cut down a cherry tree and replace it with another when it was too tall to reach cherries from the ground.

      Apple is apple so, it should work. I would give it a try because the worse thing that can happen is that it doesn't. Find someone local with a apple you like and try it out.

    We call ourselves getting the pruning tools like Paul's, but Amazon sent: GC 330 LH, as the saw; and Falcons 8 Swiss Made, for the hand pruner. And referring back to your website, these are the ones you recommend. But on this video it's stated: GCM 330 MH... Do we have the correct ones?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to change that to the GCM 330 MH. That other one was when Paul just said samurai saw and it looked right. I'm currently working on getting a discount code for the company that makes the saws to save you all a little money so, if you can return the one you have and wait a bit .... If not, it's still a good saw.

    What about Spring/Summer pruning? I pruned my trees in the winter (maybe not enough), but now I've got a bunch of suckers shooting straight up. I saw the 2016 full video where Paul says he rubs them off as they appear, but mine are way past that state (they're like 18-24" now).

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul says you can prune any time of the year. He does it in the winter because there is nothing else going on.

    Can you trim fruit trees in the summer too?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can prune whenever you want but, Paul does it in the winter because he has the time and there are no leaves to get in the way.

    Could somebody please explain why he cuts branches that go up or down? Thanks

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He says that his apple trees do not really produce fruit on up or down limbs so, why give them energy.

    • @backyardedenhomestead
      @backyardedenhomestead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      FrenchEyeD69 Paul cuts the up branches 1. for space 2. when that branch bear heavy fruits, it will break due to that it is growing upward and against gravity. The down branches 1. for space 2. when it starts growing and not enough light, branches normal grow upward and reach out to the light and for that there's a tendency that the downward branch will have a "U" turn and then break with how heavy the fruits are. Cutting those branches focuses the plants energy on the chosen branches and flowering instead of growing those new buds. Hope this helps.

    These are all apple trees, right?I watched these, pruned my big ol' apricot accordingly. So I thought. Suckers, so fierce I could have rubbed them off three times a day. I gave up and they are thick as my arm only from January to August. Fruit came on, only about 20 per major branch, and the weight pulled the limbs down almost to the ground. Is this method right for stone fruits? The limbs come off the trunk too high off the ground, over my head. Shall I make the trunk a stump to get lower branches? About a 20-year old tree. Hope you can comment, thanks.

    Any chance you can check with Paul and ask him if he would prune a citrus tree the same way? I know most say don't prune a citrus tree (like an orange) at all but I wonder...

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this video Paul says that he would prune all trees this way. His experience with cherry trees is that they grow too high no matter what you do so, barring anything like that, it should be the same. Try it one year and see. If it does not work for you, next year you will have new growth to replace what you cut.

    • @backyardedenhomestead
      @backyardedenhomestead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      cookinmom Hi, I prune my citrus trees Paul's way where I trim and clear the main branches of suckers and dead branches to allow air circulation in the middle. I also trim the part where the fruits was attached to encourage more flowers after a harvest.

      ManuScribe...thanks for the reply! I wanted to prune my meyers lemon tree but it had fruit on it all fall/winter here in N.Florida. I had fruit on it but because our winter was so warm no need to pick all of them off. Just when I was fixing to prune, I came out one day and it had tons of blooms all over it. I still had one/two lemons on it thinking I had time to prune. When on earth do you prune? Any ideas?

    • @backyardedenhomestead
      @backyardedenhomestead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      cookinmom I follow Paul's way of pruning "when it's convenient for me" therefore, normally prune right after I pick the fruit. I cut the fruit including the stub that it's attached to. That way it signals the plant to flower again because it thinks that the fruit didn't mature and bear seed. I also cut those healthy green suckers growing in the same branch as the fruit to send energy to the growing fruits.

      I just clicked it and they had 15 available. Either way, just search for SAMURAI Saw GCM-330-MH

    • @waxyTOOL
      @waxyTOOL 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A good substitute is the stihl saw you can get at your local saw shop. It is almost twice the price; but the scabbard is much better than the one you'll get with the Samurai. I have both and the Samurai is a better cutter like Paul says. I use the Stihl scabbard with my Samurai with my Felco pruners attached to it with tye-wraps. I used a nylon nut to attach the Felco sheath for pruners to the scabbard. Have fun, Bro!

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is what it is. If the trucks cannot get up the driveway then you have to have them leave the chips at the bottom then bring them up a little at a time.

    So far I've called about 16 tree companies to inquire about free or even paid for wood chips. No call backs. Discouraging. Any ideas for areas where these are non-existent? Could mulched maple leaves work perchance?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Call back every week. It is not really the time of year for chipping trees. Maybe walk in and see someone in person. Hard not to call back when you are facing them. The leaves will work. Paul says any organic material will work. The only thing about leaves and grass clippings is that you have to replace them often because of how fast they break down. You should also try straw.

    • @gracetohealanonny8852
      @gracetohealanonny8852 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      L2Survive, thank you so much for your reply and the help. I am taking your advice and will soon be walking in to the larger places I've called to say howdy. :) Very much appreciated. I just purchased 18 bales of straw recently, only to get a fright on permies about some newer type of dessicating and herbicide chemical they are putting on straw and hay lately. Apparently it can end ones garden for years due to toxicity, so I'm doing a test now with peas and beans in the straw mix to make sure its okay. Farm animals eat it, and its affecting the manures too. Took a year of calls to find the straw, so this is really turning into an uphill struggle. I had one little pile of green wood chips, and the results were so awesome. My old back can't do the digging anymore, so I'm praying this works out. Ps I did get some fresh oak saw dust last year, covered it with raw milk and molasses water mixture with comfrey leaves ground up. It drew the earthworms, and they worked the pile into good dark soil in about 3 months. Have you ever heard of anyone having some success this way? Maybe it could be a new one for others in the same boat. Thank you so much again for the great tips. I hope to have good news by summer. God Bless.

      I hear your plight too, Grace. Best bet is anytime you see trucks on the side of the road near your place to stop and ask. I've only had one load delivered in the last year and a half. But I keep trying! I'm thinking of actually getting business cards made just for chips to hand out.

    • @gracetohealanonny8852
      @gracetohealanonny8852 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gavin, thank you for your note and the tip about inquiring when I see the parked trucks. About the business cards, what a great idea!!! Its worth a shot for sure, and I think it may lead to success... who knows. Hubby saw some trucks on the highway with chippers and big piles of fresh green woodchips. When he stopped to ask they said no, the public isn't allowed to have them. What? Theres our tax dollars at work for ya. LOL. :) We went to a quarry recently to get some sand, and lo and behold they had fresh chips there. All pine and spruce trees though, it turned out...eeek. We paid $10 a yard for them, and now they are under 2 feet of snow. :D

    recently you posted a video about Paul being ill and needing help with the garden. You posted his address and phone number as well. I cannot find that video again. I wanted to post something there for you to read. I cannot access your FAQ form for some reason so is there another way to reach you? If not please tell Paul to get to a Classical Homeopath to get Homeopathic therapy. Homeopathy corrects dysfunction which could be what he has going on ..you know from the Agent Orange. Bye for now. Isaiah 11 v 1-16 And a Shoot goes out from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch will bear fruit out of his roots. (2) And the Spirit of YAHWEH shall rest on Him; He will have the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and power, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of YAHWEH. (3) And He is made to breathe in the fear of YAHWEH. But He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears. (4) But He shall judge the poor in righteousness, and shall decide rightly for the meek of the earth. And He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and He shall cause the wicked to die with the breath of His lip. (5) And righteousness shall be the encircler of His loins, and faithfulness the encircler of His loins. (6) And the wolf shall live with the lamb; and the leopard shall lie with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little boy shall lead them. (7) The cow and the bear shall feed, their young shall lie together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. (8) And the infant shall play on the hole of the asp; yea, the weaned child shall put his hand on the viper's den. (9) They shall not do evil, nor destroy in all My holy mountain. For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of YAHWEH, as the waters cover the sea. (10) And it shall be in that day, the Root of Jesse stands as a banner of His people; nations shall seek to Him, and His resting place shall be glorious. (11) And it shall be in that day, YAHWEH shall again set His hand, the second time, to recover the remnant of His people that remains, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Ethiopia, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the coasts of the sea. (12) And He shall lift up a banner for the nations, and shall gather the outcasts of Israel, and gather those dispersed from Judah, from the four wings of the earth. (13) And the envy of Ephraim shall turn off, and Judah's foes shall be cut off. Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not trouble Ephraim. (14) But they shall fly onto the shoulder of the Philistines to the west; together they shall plunder the sons of the east, the stretching of the hand on Edom and Moab and the sons of Ammon; they will obey them. (15) And YAHWEH shall utterly destroy the tongue of the sea of Egypt; and with His scorching wind He shall wave His hand over the River, and shall strike it into seven torrents, and make one tread it with shoes. (16) And there shall be a highway for the remnant of His people, those left from Assyria, as it was to Israel in the day when he came up out of the land of Egypt.
