Dark Souls 2: Unused Player Attack Animations

- These are from the network test. Some of these animations were present in early versions of the release build. Most of these are likely just test animations and were never intended to be used in the final game.
0:25 "You're pretty good"
"You're breathtaking"
*Faints and falls on his back*

AH LIQUIIIIIID
I'm pretty sure that this was gonna be an emote and I'm upset that it isn't
0:12 How to break every bone in your hand
Nah, force is directed fully to knuckles, which would be painfull, but not enough to break it. On the other hand this 1:32 ...
* sound of wrists being broken *
@@justanotherfool8896 haha, "other hand"
@@justanotherfool8896
Hate to be that guy that goes "AcTuAlLy!?!?" But in terms of knuckles, you are half-right; as you actually punch with two knuckles (your index and middle knuckles).
And I don't know how you would break your wrist thrusting your sword (unless you were trying to thrusting it into someone with plate armor, or a solid wall even).
@@presidentdeadpool3198 have you ever had a floret or even any thrusting sword in your hands? Theese swords have extremely heavy and dense handles, in order to make the little spins with the blade easier. The thing is, florets with french grip used in real life fencership are nothing compared to those used in medival times. Rotating it for 90° would pretty much snap your hand if it was possible for human body, good thing it is not unless you have hipermobility.
@@justanotherfool8896 yeah, I was told to use a pistol grip with thrusting swords to reduce wrist strain. Seems like most video games use a hammer grip, and most of those kinds of hilts can only stab safely from a downward angle like the gladius was used to do alongside a shield
This makes you understand how realistic they wanted to make DS2 feel.
These feel more like animations I'd see on special NPCs like Grave Warden Agdayne.
IIRC almost every non invader NPC has a special body and attacks
I feel some of these movements could be the attacks of above human sized bosses.
I’m surprised at how realistic a lot of those look I wonder why they got cut
maybe they're MOCAP animations, without any adjustments? idk.
Because the moment you think about gameplay and ‘’game feels’’. Those would be 100% unpleasant and 80% useless to use. And yes, that also includes the black knight heavy movesett as they also were in DS1.
I think at least a few of them are used by npcs. I think I saw some heide knight and hollow infantry animations at least.
You already answered your question
Dark Souls 2 was poorly directed
0:47 that one cracks me up for some reason
“Taste the pain ooga booga”
ooga booga
OH SHIT, A RAT

Wee~
Here's timestamps for the attack animations
0:00 Unarmed
0:27 Katanas
0:41 Great Hammers
1:02 Greatswords
1:21 Hammers
1:32 Thrusting Swords
1:41 Straight Swords
2:12 Whips
2:30 Greataxes
2:41 Ultra Greatswords
3:07 Twinblades
3:22 Spears
3:30 Halberds
4:05 Scythes
4:13 Curved Swords (with Powerstance)
4:33 Daggers
Thanks
seeing that the black knight weapons were supposed to have their special heavy attacks makes me so profoundly, unbelievably sad for some reason
BKGA was unique in that it was way slower and way worse than other greataxes.... 🤗
@@GrannySoupLadle makes me wanna rethink my bkga build ngl
0:25 he did the Ocelot thing
Something tells me that Dark Souls 2 was gearing towards shaking up the Souls formula, but then the director got replaced, and the new one had to make a shippable game with what little the team had built thus far, a game more in line with the previous two.
There were a lot of signs pointing to the fact that DS2 was originally intended to be as big as Elden Ring was in scope
THEY HAD ADDED KICKING ANIMATION BUT INSTEAD GAVE US A SHOULDER ARM THING!!
they didnt want guard break to be fast like in DS1, so they slowed it down, but then kicking animation didnt look good when slowed down so they went with something else.
Damn sucks to know they had planned a cooler moveset for one handed dual blades. Also those mace animations are straight up G o l d
2:45 yooo it's the one-handed r2 on the zweihander from ds3
Black Knight Sword
It actually is the animation that the black knights with greatsword do.
2:24 when she says her parents are out of town
4:05 got me
Some of these had potencial..
Except those that make him look like a power ranger, some of those animations look really good, I would have enjoyed to see the unarmed combat ones
The first couple two-handed halberd swings are so clean
0:06 Brofist
I love the ground attacks. The only reason I could think of these not being used is the slow cooldowns.
Dark souls 2 was a bona fide fighting game! A lot of these are early baked mocaps so it's incredible you even got your hands in these, as well as the scrapped ideas that were recycled into dark souls 3, very nice.
Halberd backstep into running attack looks just like what they used for dark souls 3, I can't remember what dark souls 1 had for that animation though
These moves need to be in Dark Souls II 2!
The unarmed backstep attack looks like he's hitting the whip and nae nae
That two handed mace combo is dope. I’d love to see a modder throws these into a mod for new weapons.
some of it much better than original like 1:22
3:44 that animation is used on ladle and yhorges spear 1 handed running r1.
A lot of these are actually in the game and used already
Looks like they had plans for more detailed fist combat, that´s a shame they cut it, fist weapons always felt so underexplored in the series...
the running jump attacks look a bit goofy but the straightsword attacks look really realistic
also I like the stab downs on the ground
These look like mocap animations. Likely used as placeholders for testing.
2:24 w h a t
I always feel alot of the early or unused animations are very telling about the development of the game (especially the early idea/development) very elaborate and intricate to a fault almost. Definitely always interesting and appreciate the detail but seems unnecessary and flamboyant in a way.
Notice that downward stab with a straight sword at 2:05. That looks like the one you see in the Dark Souls 2 trailer where he's fighting off that group of Manikins (the white mask guys with manikin knives and manikin sabres, rip original manikin mask). I wish that stayed in the game.
Edit: maybe i'm thinking of this trailer: th-cam.com/video/U6uyuIQYlfY/w-d-xo.html
btw that place in the trailer is the melted gates, a deleted area.
@@matheuscunha7780 Yeah, I bet there were a lot of deleted areas. It makes me really freaking sad. I still love Dark Souls 2, but imagine if it came out like how the trailers looked. Dark Souls 3 would struggle to top that imo.
@@Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce Dark Souls 2 had alot of potential unused, but its the best Dark Souls for me, I really like the mystic ambience this game has and I agree, It is really sad to think how much content was cut or changed to a "worse" version of the original Idea. This game feels weirdly good even being extremely and sadly different to the "original" content that we waited for, but we still love It.
@@Knight_Of_Eleum_Loyce Maybe in a close future they will do a rework for ds2, lets hope for this, It will look amazing.
@@matheuscunha7780 just imagine tho
Darksouls 2: rekindled
The true remake we need with cut content restored
3:02 Black knight sword two handed from the other games, looks like.
Yes it is
aside from a few silly jumping ones they look amazing, it would have been nice to have some of these to add more variety to the movesets within classes
That mace moveset so hot...
These look like animations that'd be in Lords of the Fallen
Of all the things not to use...
These are really clean animations, especially the two handed mace attacks. And it would seem players were originally supposed to have disabling moves that could knock someone over, given that most of the weapons have downward attacks like you'd throw at someone laying down.
We really need a "Release the Cut" petition to have Dark Souls 2 remade in its original concept, all evidence suggests this game was going to be much, much better than its final form, the development team just weren't given the time needed to make the game they wanted.
4:41 That one exists, a thief's dagger and a bandit's dagger.
I like the idea of staying grounded enemies
These looks like mocap reference for the animators to remake or refine.
I think some of those animations look really good, especially the rapier, mace, and longsword ones.
Some of them are Black knights move set, the two handed heavy attack great axe, heavy attack UGS and halberd for example
3:39 DS3 black knight halberd animation??
DS1 More like
some of these look like unedited motion capture data, lmao
and also look a bit like poopwalked animations in dark souls 1 sometimes
Bruh i wish the bone hand was just the standard unarmed fight animation in all Souls games
those unarmed animations are funny as hell, it looks like he's acting like he can in the bathroom mirror
Oh man these are cool
That twinblade animation looked awesome
A lot of these are actually moves either pasted into other weapons or just used without their prerequisite. Also The ones with the greatsword are used by heide knights (or at least one of the moves)
No they aren't.
@@benzoin-gum1208 so many of them are either riposte animations or used by enemies like the hired knights (a lot of the bastard sword moves) so yes they are
No they aren't. I have no idea how you came to the conclusion that any of them are riposte animations, and Heide Knights do not share the player's skeleton or animations.
@@benzoin-gum1208 the long sword downward poke is its riposte animation
@@nahrikkon No it isn't; the retail game's riposte animation is different. It is possible that the downward-facing attacks may have been placeholder riposte animations, but the names of the animations suggest they were for some other cut feature.
Hot dam i wish we could get those mace animantions exported and working
wow! welcome back dude :)
I think 3 hits R1 (when two-handed) is the original intention at the start? The 3rd one has a slight delay but it unmistakingly flows with the other 2 (for instance 0:32 for 2h katana and 1:25 for 2h hammer)
I do glad they changed the 2h grip idle pose in the retail version, but imagine if team B had the time and resource to cook.
Really wanna see more of these realistic, actual martial arts inspired animations in their future games. Elden Ring comes close at times but still has so much exaggerated and unnecessary motions in most of the animations. I understand they have to consider overall balance when designing the motion and speed of something but yeah.
Pretty sure the painting guardian curved sword either has, or has very similar moves to the 2h curved sword moves.
Been a long time since I used it though, could be tripping
0:24 PEW PEW PEW PEW!!!!
REALODING! COVER ME!
A lot of these just seem to be rough versions of what we eventually ended up with in the game
The curved sword animation is better than the official release version
Can just baaaarely move Zweihänder with one Hand..
Oop, nvm.. Final Fantasy Victory Motion it is
Wow, the combat that they have planned before it was going to be so different than what we got
Western Action game animator : finally a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary!!
Mocap is cool
I really liked ds2 animations so smoothe and kinda realistic ds3 just turned into anime 🤷😅 still fun tho
Wooow they actually try to put black knight weapons moveset I don't know why they decided to not put them.
My money is these animations are vanilla motion captured before being tuned
Dude sooo many of those woulve have been soo much better then what they did end up using for their atk ani's fuckin A what the hell qas from thinking
I kinda like how some of these attacks seem like strikes to the head, esp with the blunt weapons. I think that's like an actual technique irl, but I can see why they took them out. You're fighting a lot of things that aren't humanlike, so more generalized smacks make more sense visually and gameplay wise. Especially if you were fighting dogs or something short, those attacks to the head would just be a nuisance.
a whole bunch are very obvious rough mocap, they translate pretty smoothly but they look silly as hell lmao
Some of these would have been cool move sets if they were in the game but a lot of them look more like moves enemies would have. You can see the mo-cap in a lot of them too
Looks cool, pity they got cut.
Especially i would've liked ground finishers :D
The tragedy...
They really need to make Dark Souls 2 remastered and include at least som of the cut content.
Some of these are more normal, realistic ways to wield the weapons than the actual movesets that were kept. Some others look almost like animations for when you don't have the stats to wield the weapon, which ended up being a feature only DS1 has.
Not going to lie would have loved the mace, raiper, straight sword, twin blades, dagger, and bare fists. May seem slow but love the animation
Bro wtf ahahahah! Thats amazing, thx for sharing this
I see why most of these got cut. They lack weight and force compared to the now ones.
Halberd swings at 3:48 look much better than the ones we have in DS2. Don't know why they didn't use them instead
nope it dosent.
the one used in ds2,and actually most of its animations are inspired by real fencing, and only the best animations made it into the game.
They cut out the Black Knight animations. WHY
I feel like so many of these attacks are in ds3
Looks like they were messing around with motion capture animation. That would explain how uncanny these look
Damn those katana ones are so much better than the ones we got in the final product.
The attacks in this game feel much more heavy than they should, everything feels too slow
So there was suposed to be an atack for downed enemys? Neat
This is what ds2 was supposed to be..
So, those got cuts maybe cause they're too slow for the actual DS2? I mean you need to be fast, those animations are really cool indeed, but they're not fit too well for Dark Souls 2 fast gameplay.
Good thing these animations were cut because lord are they slow and janky.
The mace animations should of been kept.
Holy shit, this looks like a toy story animation
Amazing
this animations look better than the oddly still stiff ones we got.
edit: some of those attacks look like a few bosses attacks? huh
Welcome back!
Do you have any intent to do any more AI battles in DS2? The other channels do not appear interested in it for now, so it would be cool if you stepped in!
In particular, I would love to see the Sunken Crown's "Gank Squad" (Graverobber, Varg and Cerah) fighting proper bosses to see how they would fare!
got your nose!
Some of them are so good why were they cut out ...
I think it got cut because it wouldn't fit dark souls animation style, but more demon souls, and it could have got them in trouble
Random question, but do you know what bosses have friendly fire disabled? (Other than Artorias)
00:38 is this a frayed blade special attack from ds3?
Seems like you've never played DS2 or any other katana in DS3 other than washing pole, uchigatana, and frayed blade.
Looks like mocap almost, I'd wager these animations were used as place holders during development.
Those all are... a lot better?
Those are great
Are those also unique player sounds? I dont remember DS2 having armor sounds like this
They aren't used by the player in the release version of the game no. If memory serves, they are used for certain armored enemies such as the ironclads.
