  • @mp6756

This video is a very good description of the basics of hand grinding a lathe tool. Sadly a large portion of today's machinist don't have the skills needed to grind a tool as displayed in this video. I have managed a few production machine shops in this modern world of cnc machines and the "machinists" expect you should just order a tool to do whatever job hits the floor. And it's not always possible or neccesarily cost effective to order a tool to create a particular feature. In fact a lot of people calling themselves machinist don't have the basic understanding of cutting tool geometry and unless you select the tool for them weather it is an endmill or a carbide insert they lack the basic understanding neccessary to select the tool for the job.

Superb hand grinding skill! Amazing you can tease that shape out with a 6 inch abrasive cylinder. The use of this tool in your piston ring video
is equally clever. Just describing this shape correctly in 3D CAD would likely take more time than it took you to make it. Your grinding skill is rivaled only by your hat throwing skill. Great Job. You inspire me, I'm going out to my shop now to practice throwing.
