    In this video I show a variety of work related to the manufacture and installation of 4 oil nipples. I also complete the assembly of the slide bars by assembling components that I have made in previous videos.
    The lathe shown is a Myford ML7

    Thank you for making these videos, I now for the first time really appreciate the difference between studs and bolts. Also, congratulations to your whole team!

    • @MrCrispinEnterprises
      @MrCrispinEnterprises  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I should point out that most studs are not designed woth precision location in mind as often they are intended for a clearance hole application. It's just that when chosing what custom fasteners to make I happened to choose studs to base them on.

      @@MrCrispinEnterprises In your opinion, are Shoulder Screws equal, less than or better than at achieving the fastening and locating function in assemblies? Making shoulder screw assemblies is one thing, but I don't know if its a good thing to let the same screw also act as a shear pin (the way a dowel pin does) in a screw/bolt assembly where fastened components are subject to relative sliding forces because of machine operation.

    • @MrCrispinEnterprises
      @MrCrispinEnterprises  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a shoulder screw would have worked well in the application I showed here. It would give all the same benefits. The only down side is it would have taken a bit more making as you would have to machine a precise diameter plus the threads and plus the head.
      As for using them generally to replace the cap screw / dowel arrangement I'd only do so if space is an issue. Typically you only need two dowels per component to align things meaning that you only need two precise holes. With shoulder screws used in the fashion you are suggesting ever hole would have to be very precise.

    • @quadrannilator
      @quadrannilator 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrCrispinEnterprises You are right in the last line that it generally amounts to using an over complicated process, and it probably only makes sense to use it where there is some other constraint like space. I had once seen an application where there 2 fastened parts which had to be relatively located and clamped, but because of size/placement issues, it was difficult to turn matching male/female alignment diameters directly into the parts, so a bolt pattern was used in which only 2 holes (made deliberately a little offset from the rest of the pattern) used shoulder screws to align and fasten whereas the rest of them were ordinary screws in clear holes. Conventional usage doesn't allow fasteners to be used as shear resistors, but I really wonder what happens in a shoulder screw setup where you have a more complex interaction of tensile, compressive and shear forces along different sections of the material. I've not known shoulder screws to be rated for a combined shear load when there's tensile load on its threads, but using them for location will invariably result in such a stress condition.

    A strange coincidence I will relate......as you are involved with production of the jet engine turbine blade manufacture in Rolls, back in the late 70's I worked for a firm F.Mc Braida located in Bridgeyate Bristol and we had a contract to make/produce at first hundreds then thousands and eventually millions of plugs from Nimonic alloy wire to seal the ends of the turbine blades after they were investment cast......the turbine blades were investment cast hollow with 3 holes in the ends for venting and these were plugged and Tig welded closed.......I was entrusted to make a press tool to make the plugs after our resident toolmaker became ill with heart trouble and after much R&D on the tool eventually it worked and produced plugs at the rate of 8o per minute for 8 hours at a stretch.............I left the firm in 1981 under a cloud to emigrate to OZ as it was assumed I would be there for life and emigrating to OZ seemed like a betrayal of trust as far as Mick Mc Braida the boss was concerned, as he never spoke to me again personally until the day I left.........laughingly, a week before I was due to leave the manager, Tony Gower, informed me that I would not be getting a pay rise as it was deemed that I had lost interest in the work I was doing.......I just have to wonder if Rolls Royce collapsed in fits of agony when I left.

    The main problem for anyone working for Rolls Royce used to be that in the cities that they have production sites in, they were usually one of the biggest employers in the area, so everyone local knew at least one person who worked for them. This meant back in my day, every time it came up that you work for them, you invariably hear back something like "Oh. My uncle Terry works there. Do you know him? Tall bloke. Wears a boiler suit and a hat. You can't miss him". Most people didn't realise that RR might have had 5000 people working on each sprawling site, and you probably only knew 50 of them by name. :D

    A point of clarification Mr Crispin,
    I agree with everything you said in your video, it's was spot on, and I'm sure you are aware, however it wasn't made clear and is a frequently misunderstood subject, so a little more on what was left unsaid...
    A clearance hole in a part through which a threaded fastener is placed is not responsible for holding the position between two parts.
    A dowel pin placed between them also isn't responsible for holding the position between two parts.
    A properly designed bolted joint will hold its position as assembled regardless of the clearance allowed around that fastener and one using dowels will continue to hold its position even if you remove the dowel after assembly.
    The purpose of a dowel is to aid in the precision alignment of two or more parts during assembly and only during assembly.
    The thing that keeps the alignment of those parts fixed is the clamping load applied to them by the fastener and the friction that exists between the parts as a result.
    Take for example the bolted joint that retains your car's wheel to the rest of the vehicle. The layman may assume that the studs and nuts used carry the shear forces the vehicle places on that joint however in reality they should be subjected to no shear load at all in spite of the massive shear loads that joint is subjected to.
    Instead, the 5 class 8 bolts often used apply a clamping load on the wheel of around 20 tons, the friction that generates between the face of the wheel and the hub carries all of the shear load the vehicle can generate during normal use.
    As an asside, cars also use a second method of precision alignment of a bolted joint, that being the conically shaped bottom face of the nut and matching feature in the wheel. That in itself is a remarkable piece of engineering given its simplicity, repeatability and ease of manufacture.

    • @MrCrispinEnterprises
      @MrCrispinEnterprises  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point and well clarified, I would still say however that bolts in clearance holes or dowels are responsible for the position of components. It's just that once you tighten the bolts up and the assembly is finished you are entirely reliant on the clamping force of the bolts to maintain the position. Cheers
