Top Tip: Ignore all of this. Just pick Hanzo and Genji every game. Your steady stream of shurikens and arrows should easily melt those tanks. Trust me, I'm Diamond.

Kodo Elder-Groebe Seagull doesn't main Hanzo, does he ? I thought he mained the little brother
Noobie Sensei Seagull is famous for his Genji play, but really he's a flexible player, and in relative terms his Mei is probably his greatest strength. He does play some Hanzo on streams though, sometimes to devastating effect, sometimes struggling to get a kill and then smartly switching to a more appropriate hero for the situation.

I am a Genji main, I wake up put on my suit grab my weapons and go to work, I claim I am the best but only play for the rare play of the game, yes winston jumps on me everytime and kills me but I still play Genji no matter what, I am a Genji main

We need 100,000 more of these videos. Even without the gameplay footage, this is just an important thing for everyone to know, and always be thinking about in game.
It's just so hard to combine all the people who are in quickplay because some of the are just there for casual gaming or maybe even just mechanical practice with a hero they don't feel too comfortable with. So, if they're not caring about the outcome of the game, but you do...what are you supposed to do in those situations? Just leave? Concede the match and just try to have fun, until the next match starts? Those are the only two solutions I've found, but both of them are very "evasive" solutions; rather than ACTUALLY solving the problem, I'm just ignoring it.

But with no comp for a week nor any changes for the foreseeable future, things should have settled to a point where we can make more direct guides. The problem is, giving advice changes from patch to patch, so it's important for us to cover what should be current. Lots of news, and yet you're doing this very basic "How to counter pick video" ... and before that a "Toxicity problem" video... and before that "Top 10 tips for new players" ... and before that "Top 10 important terms to know" ? What in the world... the random videos are cray
David Silva The last two you listed I think were to benefit new folks during the free weekend. Toxicity is a standing issue, and now counter picking is more current as more of the lineup is viable while the meta is realigning. They're not random, just not a progressive series.

Well said Freedo, Non-swap is also one of the main argument people use against the gold medal being given during a match and not only at the end of the match.
So it's easy to see the link between this video the toxicity one and the gold fallacy at the start imo.
There is still the chance that if you are good enough with a Hero you can also kill the ones that are there to counter you, works for me often enough, i most likely play widow and as soon as i see a winston charging me i try to headshot him while he is jumping to me, often enough i can apply enough dmg to fight him close distance and win , of course i have around 10-30hp then but still i got him and not the other way around but of course when i see i dont stand a chance i swap too, but most of the time i cant even pick widow because somehow most people totaly freak out asap you pick her, they begin to trollpick and stuff i dont know why , its just anoying or they begin to cry about why you picked her and shes useless and stuff. If you can play her efficently , shes so great to pick out the right ones and push your team forward, shes also good to apply good amounts of dmg from a safe distance..
Could you guys do a video in Winston vs. D.Va? since she got buffed I've heard a lot of people say that D.Va is just a better Winston. I disagree but I certainly see the similarities. Can you talk about when to pick one over the other?
Winston is able to more effectively kill/put damage on the squishy heroes while dva has huge ult denying potential. I wouldn't necessarily say she's a better winston because she can't block damage while shooting.
Xavier Their purpose are quite different imo. Winston is good at diving in, taking all the attention and suppressing the squishies, while D.Va is kind of a main tank enhancement imo. Having a Rein shield that shoot and absorb projectiles while regenerating is quite broken indeed. Yes, D.Va can dive on enemies, but she won't get the kill for sure, compared to Winston. But she is way more useful in frontal engagements than Harambe tho.
Their roles are different. Winston's shield creates space by establishing a large area only his team can fire through, whereas D.Va's shield is directional and relatively awkward for her team to use as protection while still firing at targets, but protects against effectively unlimited damage in that direction for its duration. Winston is better at chasing down targets, because his tesla cannon covers a wide area and is a constant stream whereas D.Va has to track shots, and she suffers a movement penalty while firing, which sometimes allows a quick target to escape. D.Va's ultimate is more situational and harder to get use out of, whereas Winston's always allows him to augment his survivability and disrupt. The D.Va buff hasn't affected this distinction between how the two heroes function.
D.Va's the all rounder in the tank category and always has been, able to protect her team a little, do some damage, quickly switch between attack and defence. Winston is more nuanced: a creator of space, a disruptor, and counter flanker who can dive into the opponent backline to eliminate supports when he himself is properly supported (e.g diving in tandem with an attacker like Genji, given a Zarya shield, healed from afar by Ana or Zenyatta, or ideally all of the above).
As for when to pick one or the other, the general rule is to avoid Winston when the other team is particularly tank heavy, or has both Reaper and Roadhog, or when your own team lacks the means to support him. D.Va is hard to shift thanks to her high health, and secondary health pool when out of the mech, but she's also very mobile, so she's a good choice when the team needs staying power or a tank that can contribute in all areas of the battle. As an all rounder it's harder to specify when precisely to pick her, but at the same her versatility doesn't allow her to perform the same role as Winston, or the other tanks.
Edit: also for choke points there isn't really an alternative to Reinhardt. Even the world's foremost Winston player, Miro, will typically play Reinhardt instead specifically when attacking or defending a narrow choke point, like on Eichenwalde, and then switching to Winston later in the map.

As a Dva main who played her before she got popular, I'll add that, in the tank meta, I found her to come into her own when I started thinking of her as a DPS and not a main line tank. It was on this channel I found the term "main tank" when they referred to any hero with a shield who could regenerate or melt away damage. Winston can just about do this, Rein obviously can, but Dva can't.
Dva is basically a burst tank. She can do all the tanky things that tanks can do, better than any of them, but for short amounts of time. Add to her mobility, she's really good at diving in, engaging and diving out if out-matched. Winston does that too (and good Winstons are terrifying in the diving in and out department), but they can do more with their team in a team-fight with the shield. Basically, that shield can turn a team-fight.
Dva, with the buff, has gotten better at main-line tanking, but I don't think she's there yet and I don't think she'll ever be (and I don't think the game designers will let her). She synergises well with DPS heroes who are also bursty (e.g. I synergised once really well with a McCree, my shield allowed them to be more aggressive in charging around corners and their flashbang allowed me to mow down even hard to kill enemies like Roadhog) or with main line tanks (I love Reinhardts, we are the walking shield of death).
Yes, with the new buff she can function a lot better on her own, but then Sombra can shut her down better and the new Soldier melts her quicker if she doesn't have her shield ready or he flanks her. Pharahs are also becoming more of a problem. The only team fights she out-performs Winston on are ones with big ults that she can swallow (Pharah, Reaper, Roadhog, Soldier).

I've essentially become a Lucio main now because everyone plays dps.
Anybody that plays this game solo and likes to win has probably never played DPS since the fuckin Beta.
One word: Zarya. She's like my backup. Counters SO many heroes and when paired with a Junkrat, tracer, Hanzo, reaper, Pharah, Genji, Bastion, Roadhog and some more heroes, can essentially win a match; provided they don't have a Zenyatta and main tank. Seriously, she is only countered by Zenyatta and maybe other tanks and 1 or 2 defense/offensive heroes. A Genji harassing you and your team? Go Zarya and show him 2 things: Blades don't cut through barriers and he can't reflect a beam attack. Roadhog hooking and cooking your team? Go Zarya and show him his MASSIVD burst damage means nothing to your shields. Mei pays homage to the company who made her and tosses a blizzard? Get a shield and walk out and help your mercy or Zenyatta do the same. McCree got his hands on a time machine and it's high noon? Get a shield and blow him off course with your particle grenades. Enemies have an Ana who's proving to be a pain? Show her that her biotic grenades don't stop healing from personal shields and that your barriers are also sleeping dart resistant.

As a solo player who used to stick to one or two heroes per class, counter picking has dramatically increased my success rate and my team's win rate. Choice swaps to Winston or Reaper in particular have really swung many games.
If only I could switch lmao :D If I would switch in a phara game to a hitscan, there would be no tank or support anymore^^

I've turned around games before when I switched from Reaper to Lucio, and vice versa. It's about compensating for what your team lacks and acting accordingly. DPSes aren't doing their job well? Become a DPS! Not enough heals or the enemy DPS is too effective? Become a support! Ana's got a higher skill ceiling but Lucio is mad fun to play as because he can switch between speed boost and heals, whereas Ana requires surgical precision to get value out of her (which I have, but I lack the speed to back it up y'see >.< ). "Flow like a river" really *does* apply to Overwatch, and sometimes you have to be the change you wish to see in the game, not everyone has the meta mindset/watches these videos especially in Quick Play.
While the first swap to Widowmaker ended up working, the swap wouldn't have been so viable on console (since he plays PC) due to the differences in how Widowmaker handles on the different systems.
OMgosh thank you someone who recognizes that Roadhog isn't a tank. I can't tell you how many competitive rounds I've lost because of someone picking Roadhog as our tank and sometimes only tank. He isn't a tank period. He's DPS with a tank healthpool.
Also I know Winston is viable, I just think (a) not enough people play him on console and (b) even few play him well. Most of the time when I see people pick Winston he is of no help and just gets shredded on the field. So it was also nice to see you willing switch off him when you saw it wasn't working that match.

I would like to have a more detailed description of changing to the right heroes. Your videos are great guys.
This reminds me of a few solo games in quick play, which to me is just unranked solo queue now. DPS, DPS everywhere. (Bare in mind, my experience comes from free weekends so take it with a grain of salt.) And not a healer to be seen. What I ended up doing was going Mercy, and that act alone swung the game in our favor, moreso than if i were a Winston or Reinhardt. I had the idea of "If they're all alive, they can win." And i kept winning on mercy game after game because when we had a healer and they had none, they just lost. I believe given the choice, I would keep a bad team up longer, than a competent team up shorter. The longer a team has to stay up and shoot, the more chance they have of winning even an unfavorable matchup. Even on decent teams the enemy had, i didn't see healers a whole lot. So please, if you see the team needs one, and nobody else is listening to reason(don't just be a jerk and force someone else to be healer please), take responsibility and switch to a healer. Even small over time heals like on Lucio help a lot because that's damage you're taking off of the team and putting into ult charge.

You do so many of these 'introductory' videos. I think many of us would like you to go more in-depth on the topics. In this case, listing at least a handful of different examples (more than just two) for what counters what on what map/situation would be much more interesting than just a brief intro.
I enjoy these strategy videos. so far it's helped me, and has also allowed me to teach my friends what to do in good times and bad. I definently would like more strategy videos

I really appreciate these team comp based guides. I am rather cometend with my core heroes, and not pro enough to actually make use out of most hero based guides. But it does help me a lot to better understand my role on the team. (i still have to assemble a whole team to really use any stratagys tho^^)

In quick play i play anyone im in the mood for, in comp however i always main Rein or Lucio if rein is taken. Im confident in my rein abilities (i never charge through a choke point unless theres some sort of strat behind, i hate when i see other players do that cause most of the time they get gunned down and leave our team wide open)

I play rein at high bronze, and I have been having a much better time in comp than last season, where I played d.va mostly. Now we always have a main tank.
I think the reason so few players really tank is because the lack of good healers in Solo queue means that strategy seems to fail. Essentially you learn not to tank, counterproductively.
it's cool idea to make "how to counter-pick" type video but i don't like to see it daily since it would kill interesting content that you guys doing. As long as it is from time to time i'm fine with that :D

I have a question though; if I'm in solo que, and my whole team picks dps, should I heal, or tank? my gut says heal, but I run into this situation kind of a lot, and it doesn't always pan out when I run Lucio if they spread out, and likewise if I run Ana, if they're all skirmishing, it gets hard to keep LOS.

Aye, Winston is pro initiation for an all encompassing fight. Go with the team, become the main priority distraction and start laying down cleave damage. It is then your teams responsibility to back you up, but make sure they are ready.
make sure you survey all enemy locations before you jump in attack the backline squishys like zenyata and lucio try to avoid tanks and only use your shield when you jumping in . you can avoid a reaper but a reapee roadhog combination is really bad
One quick tip is as much as possible don't jump at the other team, and instead drop on them. i.e leap to high ground in a relatively safe position, drop onto the other team with leap and shield ready, then leap away before you've taken too much damage and put yourself in a precarious situation. A pick part of Winston play is knowing his limits, recognising danger, and having the forethought to be able to get out.
Also, at least to begin with avoid playing Winston when it's a bad match against the other team (when they have 3 or 4 tanks, or both Reaper and Roadhog), and/or when your own team doesn't have someone to support your attack on a backline, like a decent Genji, or even a Reaper, Pharah or D.Va.
And if you've got a friend who can support from distance via Zarya bubbles, Zenyatta harmony orbs or Ana snipe healing, you'll have a lot more time to go to work.

Sorry to be that guy but you used permutation wrong. A permutation is a combination where order is important and in regards to team comps order is not important therefore it's just a combination.
Hey guys, can you make a video, or a very indepth comment about when to switch off pharah? I am a pharah main (top 500 pharah with golden gun for her) and even I am not sure when it is hurting my team to stay on her after a hitscan comes in to counter me. Especially after insane soldier buff. The reason I feel this is video worthy is that I am still effective to 4/6 or 5/6 the team, and I try and get a teammate to go Winston to counter my squishy hitscan enemies, but even then they usually have a reaper to counter the Winston. If our zarya can pull in more that 3 people including the hitscan, then I can steamroll those kills and wipe them all, but I don't know if 1 wipe is good enough to stay pharah if I am useless the rest of the match. Thank you for your time, I love your channel! I also ask this channel because I know weagal plays pharah and has her golden gun.

I play Zenyatta. What more do you want from me? I throw discords on enemies. I heal you. I make sure that Pharah and Zarya don't get a massive wombo combo on us. I help us push the payload when we're locked down. I keep the point contested long enough for you to show up and save me and the objective, even if it cost me my ultimate. What else do I need to do?! D:
my main problem with rhein is that i do likr to play him, not every game but some, but almost every time i do, everybody kinda ignores me and my positioning and goes off on their own. and even though i am the main tank, i dont like to overextend and go into bad positions just so i can shiel the soldier who is gonna run and leave me when things go belly up... thats why i prefer winston or dva, because even uf you are up against a reaper or hog, you can deal with them or at least not die instantly, plus you are mobile enough to chase after your team trying to kill themselves. i dont mean that in a ragy way, i just learned as a support player in LoL that you should always assume that you adc is trying to get killed, which actually improved my gameplay there.
I think yu guys should make another video on when we should switch... or save the switch until you can use your ult. For example, obviously if yu have no ult charge and need to switch, yu should switch, but if I'm at 70 charge but I'm playing genji and a Winston starts to jump me, should I switch or wait until my ult is ready. This is just one example and I know this topic can be very situational, but I would love a video on this :)
Most DPS ults aren't going to be significant enough to hold onto tbh, Sombra EMP yes, all the rest, no. The best ults are support ults, grav, earthshatter, those are rough to give up because they win an entire teamfight.

I play lots of Hanzo, but he should honestly only be picked if there's no other good ult to combine with Zarya, which there usually is
uzef73 lol no in my opinion in playing hanzo for the whole last week and this week and from seeing other people use him hanzo is only good if you can actually land shots because when you start landing shots it goes from a 6v6 to a 6v2 since you can just obliterate all squshis in one shot
The golden rule is: You only pick Hanzo in comp if you are really good with him. He's good for way more than just his ult. If you are one of the rare players that's actually gotten really good with him, you can pretty much compete with any other DPS.

I thought this was established knowledge... playing a hero competently to counter or synergise or just plain create a good setup has always been better than sticking it out on a hero you're great at who makes no sense in the comp.
Gerry Brazell it sort of is but a lot of people refuse to do this. Tons of people only play one hero all the time regardless of map, team comp, or opponent. Lots of others just pick whatever hero they feel like playing that day and refuse to switch no matter what.
Loads of people are still stuck in the "you need to main a hero" fallacy and think that's how you get good at overwatch. That barely works even at the highest pro levels of game where in a full 6 team you can afford to specialize, but it's even worse in solo q. There's also the problem of global ult rate nerf that makes swapping more punishing, but it just means you need to swap as soon as you see a problem, not waste time more time with a bad comp just to use ults.
that is not a fallacy. how many times do i have to say this? a main is not the only hero you ever play, is it the one you are the most familiar with and prefer playing when the option is present. IMO it is impossible not to have a main unless you somehow have the exact number of hours on every single hero. i would rather be great at a few heroes than average-at-best on all of them
very mad guy I'm obviously talking about people who only play one or two heroes in competitive and refuse to swap to fit the team comp, map or enemy comp. Ranked is littered with these people. People who don't want to practice other heroes because it might tank their SR in the short term but actually benefits you in the long term.
By that looser definition of 'main', I have mained several heroes so far (Dva, Lucio, Reinhardt, Bastion, Winston), as I go through natural phases of wanting to improve different heroes. Currently I've settled on Reinhardt, and I think its so important for Reinhardt mains to have a good Winston, and know when either is preferable. Sometimes even D.va is preferable.
The issue of never switching isnt just among the stereotypical dps (namely genji/hanzo mains), I've seen Dva's and Winstons refuse to switch when they are getting hard countered and not providing any counter-value themselves, and limited synergistic options.
My philosophy is to have one or two specialist heroes, and then to become at least competent at their alternatives. I can basically play any tank plus Mei (except Zarya), but favour the lead tanks. I can play any healer, but my Ana could be better. This wide pool lets me counter pick and straight up win games. Whenever I lose, its often the case that I know I should have changed earlier, or someone on our team should have changed.
Overwatch is more about team composition than any other aspect. Sometimes the shooter aspect barely matters. Thats how influential counters are.

It just doesnt feel like its worth swapping heroes. You go with your 3 Tanks, 2 Support, 1 DPS and you include Ana and Soldier in that team, youre gonna shoot out Pharah with that, youre gonna be good in almost every situation.
There is no counter to a team having 2 or 3 Tanks, that would make them consider switching out that second Tank to another DPS. I absolutely hope Blizzard makes DPS more important as soon as possible.

D. DeJesus Really, only hard counter to every character is Zarya. D.Va quite well counters Hanzo. But Zarya, she just manages to kill everyone. Only possible issue for her would be Roadhog or Reindhart but under the right circumstances, she'll counter everyone. Seriously. Ever play against a good Zarya? A mercy and Zarya combo, as well as a good DPS or hero with a powerful AoE, high damage ult like D.Va's self destruct can wipe an enemy team, even without her ult or an assist character.
I thought the hard counter to everyone was Mercy.

Ivan Kong Definitely switch from Lucio to either Ana or Zen. If you don't have a main tank or healer, chances are the team's not using your speed boost anyway. Zen is a good dps carry in addition to having heals, so I recommend carrying with him if the team is just bad, or run Ana if the team us good. After all, just one nano boosted dps hero can kill a team.

So I play Winston and Ana pretty competentl and I solo qeue a lot. I'll see the little no tank and no healer icons on the side of the screen because everyone wants to play DPS. In this situation, who would be the better pick?
s1universe Depends on the context, but if you have 5 dps as a general rule of thumb you're better off with a healer. Winston especially relies on a lot of healing from teammates, so you're probably better off playing Ana. Plus, chances are that at least ONE of the dps players is decent, so nano boost will give a good payoff.
What will it take for Sombra to become a viable pick? I really enjoy playing as her yet I get the feeling I could be contributing more to the team. Thoughts anyone?

Fallout Night Get a good Widow, recognize she is a niche pick used for attack A a lot of times. Don't just lock her without looking at your team.
It also helps if your teammates aren't retarded and don't just run in without listening. Also understanding situations at my rank is harder even if I know what to do.

I'm a Reinhardt main
I try to play rein because nobody chooses main healers or tanks and my team doesn't even use my rein shield and soldier absolutely shreds my shield. What is there to do? When a team of full dps counters a well balanced team?
Dominik Tursich Roll with Winston, Zarya, or maybe a healer. Rein is great, but if nobody's cooperating you're better off sacrificing team comp to carry instead. Zarya's especially a good pick because she can help carry dps while also saving anyone who gets into a bad spot. She also doesn't need a healer as badly as the other tanks due to half her health being shields.
