Not just dog dander. Probably dust and mold. Wear a mask during demolition. Strip it back and keep it simple. Great floors. Air B and B customers will appreciate the simplicity and rustic setting more than fancy furniture.
I agree 100 with your recommendations. When we pulled the carpet up from the 150 year old house we bought in the fall, the original floors were really good. We replaced some planks and then painted the floors and put area rugs in for the yummy factor.
Love watching the work being done but feel a little put off by the repeated appeals to become a patron or like and subscribe. It makes this program feel like an infomercial.
I hope you're going to make a whole series about this restoration, with the exterior of house and the garden included. There seems to be an almost insatiable interest in house restoration these days [with many of those houses being nowhere near as charming as this house] so you should get great views. Meanwhile, it's great to see the cottage has not been mucked about with too much. Just look at that baseboard on the stairs. It was cut to curve up/around the stairs and it looks so much more attractive than just a straight cut. I wonder if the people who built the Keeper's Cottage paid extra for that little detail or whether it was just routine back then. I paid a *lot* extra to have that done in a cottage I was having renovated 20 years ago!
In addition to animal fur and dander, you’re also pulling up dust mites and their poop-sure to make your sinuses and eyes irritated. It’s always a good idea to wear a mask and vacuum while you work. Also, open as many windows as possible. That’s what I would do.
Julie! You should wear a mask when pulling up flooring. Not just because of the dust, but because you never know what you may find underneath (mold, asbestos, etc.).
I'm a big believer in doing things yourself. I've renovated a 1952 home, including helping reshingle the roof and putting in a new drainfield. I've restored and refinished several antique pieces of furniture, learned to make my own swag-and-jabot drapes, and I'm presently landscaping my yard into a visual paradise. If there is a tight budget, and you want refinished floors, watch tutorials on TH-cam and do it yourself! There is a tremendous joy and satisfaction that comes with tackling new challenges and conquering them. 🙂👍
Going to be fun. Carpeting has so many allergens, I’m surprised you didn’t start wheezing. Mice droppings are the worst. Thanks, Julie. You and Luke wear masks next time.👍🏻😊
I love the multicoloured tiles in the kitchen! What fun! When removing old carpet, or closets, or paneling......it is really important to protect your health by wearing the appropriate safety equipment. A mask and safety glasses go along way. So do a good pair of gloves! Just looking out for you!! I would love to see more of these renovation projects. It is so important to save buildings with historical significance. And these will fund many projects around the estate when finished. You go girl!! Susan from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Be careful with this old plastic floor in one of the rooms. These old tiles may contain asbestos. They were used in the 50s. Wish I could live in that cottage!
This cottage will be so darling when finished, as really sure! So comfortable and cozy. Think the way it is tucked into the woods there will be so much nature to find yourself part of giving you company. Am sure the birds will be first to keep you singing in the mornings.
Having just spent a signification amount of time renovating a 130+year house, I can’t EVEN IMAGINE having to renovate this cutie-pie cottage. I wanna get my hands on it! Wish I lived there in England, Julie because I would SO BE THERE to work on it with you. I love renovating homes…so rewarding. You’re so freaking awesome to tackle this and be the PROJECT MANAGER. You’re going to do fabulously.
I'm not sure how I missed this video! It's wonderful! Yes, stain the floors instead of painting. They will be beautiful with a throw rug! I absolutely love the upstairs! Beautiful ❤️ Lovely music! I'm sure your father loved his gifts ❤️! Plus, they came from you so how could he not love them! Great job with the carpets!
What a darling cottage! Nice job taking the carpet up! All you need is a pry bar and a hammer to get the carpet tack up that is all around the rooms. Then you'll really be done! Can't wait to see what you do with this darling cottage!
Mine as well! With your "sweat equity" there will be more budget for other repairs and renovations. Good for you. Along this line I have one thought. I live in Florida where humidity is high for 6 mos. of the year: My bug man wears some kind of sleeves made of a wicking material. He says they keep his skin from accumulating too much sweat. He feels more uncomfortable crawling around underneath houses without them.
Cannot wait to see this project finished!! And I look forward to the forthcoming episodes. Julie you are a go-getter and I know it will be the quintessential charming English cottage when you get through with it. Great place for a couple to spend their honeymoon too!
How is Julie annoying and loveable at the same time!! I like that she is so excited about English everything. I can see that she truly loves this estate and her family. No fancy pants attitude with her!
Julie, it would really be cool if you found little bits for the cottage in thrift and antique shops and filmed it! I could see Victoria magazine putting your cottage in one of their issues. You’d get more exposure to rent the cottage. I can’t wait to see the finished product.
Wow that's a beautiful assignment! Looks like more elbow grease than money, always hard to tell at the outset though.💪😍 I think I am going to love this one.
Good work. You are a great worker. Nice to get the carpet up. Maybe open the windows to get rid of the dust and dander...exciting project for all us armchair renovators to share the journey a little as well. Love your lively enthusiastic firey female energy...great viewing and great potential here.
Luke firmly in the back seat. Right. That's why he had to interrupt with that. Right. Julie's got his number: Perhaps in a different car. Right. Hilarious.
I pulled all of the carpet up in my “new” house a few years ago and I struggled with catching my breath too. My chest hurt. I thought it was dander as well, but really I pulled a muscle in my chest. My Doctor said it was very common, and that only rest would heal it. It did and I paid someone $100.00 to pull up the carpet in the last room. Best of luck
I really like the all plans you have for the cottage. I sanded the floorboards in my current and previous small house in England and then oiled them. The Lino tiles may be easier to cover up than remove which is a shame. I think the kitchen probably only needs a freshen up for now. Rugs and curtains will really help to make it homely. Well done Julie. You and Malcolm can do this!
06-13-22 U.S.A. I agree with Jean Thobaben's comment below. Originally, this would have been considered a simple, humble little cottage. As such, it should retain its cozy and rustic charm by not over decorating it. The decor should reflect what the Keeper's House was/is: a charming English cottage. About those stripey socks! Luke, you are not plain and boring, but rather understated and dignified. I'm with you regarding the socks. 👍😉
My wife and I are huge fans of your videos, they are always a special part of our day. My wife is celebrating a milestone birthday this weekend and I wondered if there is any chance you could wish her a Happy Birthday in your next video by saying "Happy Birthday Snookum Snookums!" It would really mean a lot to us both! Thank you & God Bless!
I totally hear Luke’s viewpoint. Budget is so very important. There is so much one can do during renovations. FOR SURE! However, sometimes we have a champagne taste on a beer budget. Totally do-able. Sometimes the interior decorators and contractors forget that there might not be a limitless bucket of money from which to dip. I see you, Luke!!
This cottage is so charming & will be fabulous when , Julie is finished with it! They always love Julie’s enthusiasm on her projects. It’s almost like being there.
Adding in that I would love a renovation series on the cottage. Also please don’t forget about us artists who would love to come and paint at Mapperton! I’m certain that there’s a way to have to be both educational, supportive of fine artists as well as income generating for the estate. I’m a Brooklyn base painter and would love something like this! Also grew up in Missouri so I appreciate Julie’s enthusiasm! We love our hardwood floors :)
Peeling carpet off of the stairs are so rewarding. We had purchased a brand new home when we lived in Augusta Ga and they put carpet on the stairs. There was beautiful planks on those stairs! What were they thinking??! I know how you feel Julie! I feel your excitement.
What a cool project! I love how the cruddy old carpet has "age and storytelling," :) I hope you will keep the colorful tiles in the kitchen, though - those are so cool!
Awww Luke. You're not plain and boring. Just very English. So yes. Step 1 is stripey socks. That will already be a HUGE step out of your safety zone. So don't go too overboard. We love you how you are. She's just American- like myself I might add. So Not being Boring comes naturally to her. We love you Luke. -maybe help spend some quality time sanding with Julie. Ha! Ha! 😄😝😘😘😘
My dream ad an American would be to move into this cottage AFTER it is renovated and live there happily ever after! ( And I actually like the colored tiles in the kitchen, too! 😁) This will be absolutely charming!
So curious about the history of this little sweet gem of a cottage. :) Would love to see a period style cottage garden from Edwardian times or WW2. So curious. Thanks for posting! :)
I love it. I have an idea. Take on carpentry student's locally for on the job training in historic preservation of the cottage. You have a trades school nearby? give them a call and see if its doable to take on a few student's who would have an interest in working/learning a trade? It can't hurt to inquire.
Oh my heavens !!! I am sooooo loving this !!! And yes , as an American it is my dream !!! Actually , since I will never be able to , you are doing my dreams for me !!! The Italian home and an English or French cottage . And , it is a sheer joy to watch you do it !!! 💖💖💖
This is going to be a perfect project for you Julie! I can totally see you doing a lot of work just like most of us midwestern girls would! Sand the floor? Sure lets do it!Sledge a wall? Yes! It will get any anger out that I’m holding in! 😉👏🏼🌺
Love the project! Wear a mask, use a box cutter to strip the carpet into more manageable sections, cover your body when uncovering years of old construction material. Take care Julie! ❤️ Christi, Alabama.
I love the cottage, it's so magical. I would also use a mask and open all the windows when you sand etc. You could also use a sinus rinse after you're done your work day. BTW, I can't believe that you don't have dogs at Mapperton. I thought it was a prerequisite to have dogs in a beautiful county estate!
When we took over my in-laws house, we also tore out all of the carpets, living room, dining room, halls and bedrooms. There was beautiful hardwood floors beneath. Thank goodness. I can’t have carpeting due to allergies so we were quite successful in modernizing the h Ouse and removing allergen collecting carpets. I’m sure you will be equally happy. I would suggest wearing long sleeves and a mask while you do this. The materials have been there for decades and could have tons of allergens there
Yeah so I agree with Jean. Where a mask one that has a good filter on it you have to for mold and dust and things like that it's been probably quite a few years you'll need protection for your lungs. But originally I started to comment that I think Julie and Luke are so cute together and they talk and it's so nice and they say nice things and they talk about what they're doing on the Estates is so interesting. I love it.
Much sympathy to you Julie, for all the dust raised pulling up carpeting. When renovating my older home, I did all the demolition myself including pulling up all the carpet in the full house. It was hard, itchy, sneezy work, but very rewarding!

Oh this is going to be heaven ! On top of your wonderful Italian reno collaboration , I am going to adore the reno of darling Keepers Cottage, from a Brit in Toronto 💖🏡
Julie I've removed old carpeting in my home...quite a job, especially getting all those carpet staples out of the floor. The end result was worth it. You are lucky in that you don't have to live in the house while it undergoes renovation. You can take a step back and really assess the works progress. Best of luck ..can't wait to see it as you go along.
Lovely cottage. You should be wearing work construction glasses to protect your eyes. You are probably getting the dust residue form the carpets in your eyes from listing the carpets. This project is fantastic. I hope you will be showing how you progress through this renovation. Great wood floors. Would be lovely stripped and varnished. You did great on the rug being taking up.
Cannot wait to see how you decorate the cottage. Once I visited a cottage in Virginia that was decorated in primary colors red, blue, green and yellow. It was precious. The owner was an artist and her studio was also in those colors and big boxes of the crayon primary colors on her desk. Very classy but I know you will have to do yours more traditional. Have fun! Hello from Texas! What a wonderful cottage! Please wear a mask! Save your sinuses!

Awww…. Such a charmer. I’m imagining roses trailing over the front door and a happy kettle whistling on the hob. Looking forward to your magic here.
What a beautiful cottage! I am looking forward to watching you restore it.

I love that Edwardian fireplace at 10:46! Yay!!!! This is so fun to watch! Thanks for posting!
Wouldnt that detail look lovely with some subtle painting to pick out the details? Nothing too bright, just a shade or two different

Something for me to aspire to - a stay at this quaint cottage.
Julie I love your energy☺️ Malcom and you make a great team.

I am so excited to see this project evolve! I absolutely adore your work ethic, and the joy you radiate in the process!
Thank you so much!
Excited for the series
🥰 I would love to live in that cottage!!
AHAHAHA hahahahaha Y’all are so funny !!!!!!! Love the cottage. Garden has to be perfect too. Bring in Luke’s Mama.
Many times when Luke speaks he reminds me of Colin Firth, actor.
The cottage is beautiful! I really look forward to seeing you renovate it.Julie your hard work is impressive! Love from Vermont
Malcom is great! He really knows his business
Much sympathy to you Julie, for all the dust raised pulling up carpeting. When renovating my older home, I did all the demolition myself including pulling up all the carpet in the full house. It was hard, itchy, sneezy work, but very rewarding!
How exciting. Let’s get started!
I tore up some carpets and restored some floorboards recently - Polyx-oil is great, you can still feel the texture of the wood unlike varnish, but it’s also enough protection to protect the wood. Plus a lot easier to maintain than having to strip and redo paint or varnish 🙌
Wow! The floors!
Love watching you as you just dive in. No time like the present. Be careful and mask up like others have already said. Excited to wat h your progress.
Here's an anecdote about our experience with floors (US Midwest). We had layers of ceramic, sheet vinyl, and vinyl squares on top of oak floors. Old vinyl is tedious but not hard to pry up. For us the hard part was getting the black, tar-like glue off the wood, which we did by pouring mineral spirits on it and wiping and wiping (on a windy day with all the windows open). There may be some staining around your fireplace but I suggest it would be worth getting that old vinyl or lino up.
Julie I love the kitchen tile also. Love all the channels. You and Luke are fun match
Julie you are amazing! You are smart and a very hard worker! Looking forward to seeing the Keepers Cottage restored!
I would love to restore an old small cottage in England. 😄
So much cuteness! 😍 I love cottages! 🌷
How Fabulous!)))…As always, LOve the music chosen throughout!))))

Oh this is going to be heaven ! On top of your wonderful Italian reno collaboration , I am going to adore the reno of darling Keepers Cottage, from a Brit in Toronto 💖🏡
It’s the dust! Nice cottage.👍🏼🇨🇦
It's a great feeling when you pull up carpet and find good, hardwood flooring underneath
Love, Love Love watching this restoration!
So much potential. You and Malcolm have the touch.
What a fantastic little cottage!
I agree with everyone’s opinions. Y’all took all the ideas right out of my brain. Wahahahaha!!!!!! It will be fun to watch
Julie, job well done‼️👍🏼 always use protective face masks as well as gloves for health reasons. 😁⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Exposed upstairs timber flooring is fine as long as doesn't bother people that are sitting downstairs trying to relax.
Have fun! Looks as if you have a good start on landscaping!
