Ingmar Bergman was a lover of horror fiction and movies. There are explicit references to the 19th century German horror author ETA Hoffmann in The Hour of the Wolf and Fanny and Alexander -- he even talked about it in interviews. The Serpent's Egg, The Magician, The Seventh Seal -- there are horror movie references galore. And Through Glass Darkly, it is not only a horrific depiction of schizophrenia in itself, but the obvious source of inspiration for Polanski's Repulsion four years later.

The cultural life in Sweden is very snobbish, and it is regarded as embarrassing for such a "highbrow" artist to be inspired by the horror genre. The natural result of this is that they can never fully understand such a movie as The Hour of the Wolf, which is pure neo-gothic filmmaking.
Nice how you notice glimpses of horror in many Bergman films besides these two, he seems to be interested in aspects of the horror genre
