I said Franklin first came up the idea and didn't not say anything about him taking claim on the concept. Of course, in ancient time, they also used somewhat of a DST but their timekeeping is inaccurate to fully recognized. I also did not say you are wrong on who made the concept into actualization.

      Not just that, but imagine having a barn full of animals expecting the food to come at the same time every day, and the pandemonium that ensues when that is not the case. You can't really explain it to animals that the clocks have been moved, they don't care.

    • @noraeable

      Most farm animals are animals of habit, particularly cows. So, when their schedules get shifted by an hour for no reason, they are not happy about it.

    The explanation I always heard was that it's so that there's more hours of daylight when people get home from work, so they can so out and do fun stuff you'd want to do in the daylight.
    I've always thought that was a bit odd since you've got more hours of daylight in the summer anyway.

    • @stanrogers5613
      @stanrogers5613 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If you live far enough north (or south in the southern hemisphere), half of that extra time happens at ungodly hours of the morning when you're likely to still be sleeping. DST probably doesn't seem to make a lot of sense at moderate latitudes, but noon-based time (standard time) makes just as little sense at more extreme latitudes. You either reschedule everything earlier... or just change the damned clocks and pretend everything is normal.

    • @sihollett
      @sihollett 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@stanrogers5613 DST in places like the UK (north of 50) is really about Spring and Fall, rather than Summer.
      When there's so much light in summer there's surplus at both ends, so having daylight at 3-4 or 21-22 is certainly pretty moot. In London, there's a month where there's no technical night and 'nighttime' is just twilight. And London is in the south of the country. It doesn't really matter much what the clocks say - there's a load of surplus daylight.
      But when it's April or September and a choice between daylight 5-6 or 18-19, then clearly the latter would be used more and it makes sense to shift. But, come late fall/early spring when the choice is between 7-8 or 16-17, then 7-8 is better as it's dawns that have a bigger effect on mental health.
      Midwinter is somewhat moot, but the choice of 8-9 or 15-16 in London (worse elsewhere) is still a choice that leans towards morning light for people's sanity. Plus 8-9 puts one rush hour in the light, rather than the zero that 15-16 gives.
      The UK tried (in peacetime - during the wars the UK moved to Berlin time, and threw in summer time on top of that in WW2 and most of WW1. Unlike the French and Spanish, the UK did at least move back to its native timezone after the war) having GMT+1 all year, as people were finding the clock change stupid and the dark Oct-Mar evenings annoying. They found that the dark Oct-Mar mornings worse and they didn't continue the experiment when it ended - it got flattened in Parliament.

      Yeah i understood the logic that if at this time of year the sun sets early and rises early that moving the time back 1 hour would then put people’s waking hours more in line with the sun being up but that only really makes sense back when having a light source was expensive or difficult. Most places will be well lit at night and even if they aren’t people have phones, flashlights etc.

    Rechtsschutzversicherungsgesellschaften isn´t even long. I mean, it is long, but not really long for German standards. Eat this: Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (that was the name of a German law regulating the delegation of tasks concerning the labelling of beef). Well, technically this isn´t true, the whole title was "Rinderkennzeichnungs- und Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz"

    While Germany was indeed the first country in the world to adopt Daylight Savings Time, they are not to blame for it.
    The person responsible for this little gem of collective insanity was a New Zealand entomologist, by the name of George Vernon Hudson, who in 1895, suggested that everyone in New Zealand should put their clocks forward by 2 hours in October and back 2 hours in March (the Southern Hemisphere summer period).
    Why did he want New Zealand, at the time populated predominantly of dairy farmers (who actually benefit LEAST from the idea, since many of their activities occur in the pre-sunrise hours of the morning), to adopt a policy so hostile to its main industry?
    So that HE could spend more time looking at bugs.
    What a nice guy. Fucks so much of the world over, for the sake of a personal fucking hobby.

    Really, why _is_ this still a thing? I have yet to hear a single decent argument in its favor. Personally, I've always suspected that it was part of some kind of conspiracy by morning people: it means that in the winter, when daylight is scarce, people awake early in the day get more daylight hours, whereas in the summer, when there's already a surplus of light, people get more of it in the evening. So every spring, we get to lose an hour of sleep, and every fall, we get to suddenly never see the sun because it's set by the time people leave work.
    Seriously, why are we doing this?

      I don't even know what this was about, "Maybe you should take your smarts back to the "Mainland"." Was it supposed to be a jab at them using the term Mainland? That is a pretty common term.

    • @missmauimac
      @missmauimac 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Ambrose Cook-Saloway humility is a good thing. Being called stupid isn't. "IQ similar to the cows" is a blatant insult. I grew up in Hawaii and never once was DST discussed, it was irrelevant because it did not apply to us. Did I know about it- yes. Was I taught about it in school- no. so my point is, maybe instead of this teacher taking the time to call her students stupid on social media, she should use that time more constructively towards teaching her students. Goes to show her attitude towards the children in her classroom. Maybe, like DST, it's time we retire her.

    • @ambrosecook-saloway2959
      @ambrosecook-saloway2959 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ""IQ similar to the cows" is a blatant insult"
      They we're just trying to be funny and tie it into the article, it's also a prop of the humiliation here, I doubt they actually believe what they said, it was just supposed to mean the student was stupid. No way to get around that as people with lower-than-average IQs have more children than those with above-average IQs.
      "maybe instead of this teacher taking the time to call her students stupid on social media, she should use that time more constructively towards teaching her students"
      Everyone needs a release, maybe her release from the stress of working with kids is to anonymously bad mouth them on the internet. Again, you have no way of knowing how well she teachers her students, and to try to claim she shouldn't have time to herself on the internet is just crazy.
      " Goes to show her attitude towards the children in her classroom."
      It really does not at all, the internet is a completely different setting from her school, and humans act accordingly to where they are. All teachers are supposed to be nice. If you think every teacher that is nice to you, actually likes you and some aren't just doing their job, you're deluding yourself.

    Here in Queensland Australia (North Eastern state), we had daylight savings and is was very unpopular. Back in the early 90's, we voted no to daylight savings.
    Now the people from the southern states who moved here want it,
    the rest of the state don't want it.
    SO JAM DAYLIGHT SAVINGS UP YOUR ARSE.

    • @internationalgeographic8986

      It was very unpopular in the regions. In the metro areas, ie the majority of the state, it had and still has comfortable majority support.

    So bullshit, a lot of people don't care but for someone like me (grade 10 high school student) day light saving sucks major ass cause I gotta get up for school and most teenagers now a days barley get sleep in the first place and taking away an hour... Man it takes awhile getting used to.

    Daylight Saving Time is actually very useful in northern countries like Norway, where I live. Due to the Earth's tilt, the amount of actual daylight time we get changes based on the time of year, therefore it is actually quite useful here. By changing everyones schedules by an hour, we get more use out of the little daylight time we actually do have during the winter months. People would rather work in daylight so it works out just fine. Also our internal clocks are based on the sun and the daylight, adjusting our schedules fixes our internal clock so we don't get tired at 4pm when the sun sets.

    • @BreaksFast
      @BreaksFast 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The benefits of Daylight Savings Time somewhat depends on your latitude. Where I live, DST puts daylight where we most need it. We do not need the sun to come up at 4:00 am, but would prefer it to go down a bit later at night so we can enjoy evening activities like kids sports and social gathering later in the day.

    For those of you who get baffled by the very long words in German language, they're actually several words. +sarcastic bowl of cornflakes It hasn't to do with sensibiltiy, but it can also change the whole meaning of a word. Dutch is a bit same about this subject, so I give you a Dutch example. 'Oude damesfiets' and 'oudedamesfiets'. In English you have exactly the same translation: Old ladies' bike. In Dutch however you can show the difference between a ladies' bike which is old (first example) and a bike which is designed for old ladies (second example). I've to be honest that sometimes it's hard to choose using a space bar and not using the space bar, but this way you don't need to create totally different words if they are in the same subject group, in this example the ladies' bike.

(To make matters more confusing for people like me who have dealings with people in Australia, they not only change their clocks two weeks earlier/later than we do--making it hard to figure out what time it is during the transition--but the entire state of Western Australia DOESN'T change their clocks and are in a different time zone from the east.
