ABOUT MELLOW MOOD
In this video, I'll walk you through all the steps to create a simple top-down seamless raglan sweater. This kind of sweater is the one beginners often start with, and I added some interesting design elements by incorporating rib lines that run down the length of the sweater.
I love the Mellow Mood sweater for its minimalist design because true comfort is often found in simplicity.
________________
This sweater is crafted seamlessly using circular needles, and it's worked from the top down. It starts at the neckline, progressing into a yoke.
The yoke is then divided to create both the body and sleeves, which are finished separately.
This sweater is designed with 20-25% positive ease, ensuring you'll achieve a relaxed and comfortable fit. If you prefer a more fitted look, you can choose to knit a size or two smaller. I am wearing a size S and, I am 168 cm tall (5’6’’) with a 89 cm (35 inches) bust circumference.
7 sizes are available in the PDF knitting pattern: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL. I demonstrate how to knit size M.
🍭 MATERIALS
1. Yarn. I used Drops “Nepal” yarn (65% Wool, 35% Alpaca, aran/worsted, 50 g/75 m or 1.8 oz/82 yards, color 0206) for the Light Beige sweater
For the Light Gray sweater in the video tutorial, I used Drops “Alaska” yarn (100% Wool, aran/worsted, 50 g/70 m or 1.8 oz/76 yards, color 63 pearl gray, less pleasant to touch than Drops Nepal).
You will need 900(XS) - 990 (S) - 1150(M) - 1230(L) - 1400(XL) - 1640(2XL) - 1725(3XL) yards.
24 Yarn options! Check the FREE Aran yarn guide for this sweater! www.esenique.c...
2. Circular needles:
For neck, cuff, and body ribbing: 4.5 mm (US 7) in the following lengths: 40 cm (16 inches), and 80 or 100 cm (31 or 40 inches).
For yoke, body, and sleeves: 5.5 mm (US 9) in the following lengths: 40 cm (16 inches), and 80 or 100 cm (31 or 40 inches).
Alternatively, you can use the Magic Loop technique and work with one needle length of 80-100 cm (31-40 inches).
3. Tapestry needle: Used to slip the sleeve stitches onto scrap yarn and to weave in ends.
4. Stitch markers: You'll need 8 markers, with one of them in a different color to mark beginning of round.

I can’t emphasize enough how much I appreciate instructors who just get right to the point/task etc.
That makes me happy! Straightforward instruction is what I aim for.
@@knitwithesenique I am having trouble when I change to my 5.5 needle. My stitches do not add up. Are we suppose to increase on the first line when setting up the markers? I am making a large.
Julia you have changed my life with this pattern. I’m on my third sweater!! After all these 15 years of knitting I’m finally make a sweater!! Thank you so much for the beautiful pattern and incredible video. 🎉❤❤❤🎉
Thank you for sharing your story. It means the world to me that the Mellow Mood pattern helped you reach this milestone ❤. Here's to many more happy sweater-knitting years!
P.S. I just started knitting my next Mellow Mood sweater this morning, this time using 100% cotton yarn. 🤗
Excellent tutorial!!! Thank you so much ❤❤❤
You are very welcome 😊
Amazing, my daughter has only been knitting a few months, I bought her the pattern, she thought it was beyond her. With your wonderful comprehensive instructions and helpful videos she has just completed her second and starting her third. Thank you.
That's absolutely fantastic! It always makes my day to hear stories like this. Tell her to keep up the great work, and congratulations on finishing her second project!
Such a good tutorial and pattern! I made my first ever jumper with this pattern and I loved it, just finished making my second jumper!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! Congratulations on completing your first sweater - that’s a wonderful milestone! I’m so glad to hear that this tutorial helped you along the way 😊
The design of this sweater is what caught my eye, and I am so thrilled to have your wonderful instructions to follow. I struggle with pattern sometimes and have no one I can turn to for help…. I feel like everything on the sweater is much clearer after watching this video. I am a fan! And looking forward to knitting this sweater. Thank you very much for going to the trouble of creating the pattern and video!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I am so happy the design and instructions resonated with you, especially if you've struggled with patterns in the past. That's exactly why I create these tutorials - to make knitting enjoyable and accessible. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions along the way, and I can't wait to see your finished Mellow Mood sweater! ❤
I love the shaping detail in this. I hate set-in sleeves and I keep going back to very old (40+ years) raglan patterns that I have in various yarn weights from 4ply to Aran.
Love the raglan too! Totally understand why you prefer them over set-in sleeves 😊
I am a crochet person, but I’m going to try knitting so I can hopefully soon be able to attempt this beautiful project.
That's wonderful! Welcome to the world of knitting. I'm sure you'll enjoy the process, and I'm here to help if you have any questions along the way. Happy crafting! 🌼
Just something I do for a turtleneck. Since this is a topdown sweater, I'd cast on with a needle 1 size larger, and work the first half (the outer half) of the turtleneck on the larger needle, and switch back to the suggested needle for the inside half. I prefer a looser fit.
I love that approach! It's always inspiring to hear different techniques knitters use. Thanks for sharing! 😊
I have watched this video over and over. I have ordered my yarn and can't wait to cast on!
Wishing you a joy-filled knitting process! Happy knitting!
Hi Julia
Wow ....as a new knitter,I need to learn to trust the process :-)
Going to be working on body now. I tried sweater on and can tell that it's going to fit. Myself and husband love it already.
Now, I need to calm down when it comes to the sleeved.
Thank you so very much for answering ALL of my questions and being a pain . You are very right .... know already that I will make another and can't wait to get yarn for your lighter version.
Thank you thank you for your hard work doing this to help us out here .....hugs
Thank you so much for your message ! So happy to hear you're already loving the fit! 😀
It's totally normal to feel a little nervous about new things, and I'm here to answer any questions you have along the way.
Sleeves might seem daunting, but you've been doing great so far! Can't wait to see your finished creation! 😊
I'm so happy to see someone who knits exactly as I do! I'm going to buy the pattern today!
That's wonderful! It's always great to connect with a fellow knitter. Thank you for deciding to purchase the pattern! If you ever want to share your progress or have any questions, feel free to reach out. Happy knitting! 😊
This will be my first sweater and I am so excited to get started. Thank you for this easy to follow lovely sweater pattern.
Wow, that's so exciting 😊! First sweaters are always a memorable experience, and I'm so happy this pattern is the one you picked to kick things off. I designed it with clear instructions for beginners in mind, so hopefully you'll find it easy to follow along.
I was so excited to follow along and knit this, but then realized this sweater won't fit me. I hope you will include more sizes going forward. Your sweater is beautiful and it looks like your pattern and instructions are clear and detailed. This looks like a fantastic opportunity.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm sorry to hear this size won't work, but I'm definitely considering including more sizes in the future. You can send me an email to info@esenique.com and share the problem you encountered.
I received this pattern this evening as a free gift for signing up to your news letter. I have just finished your Frosty pullover and was very pleased with it. Your detailed and thorough pattern notes make everything so much easier. I now trust you as one of my favourite designers. 😍
Thank you so much for your kind words! I am so happy I could be a part of your knitting journey 😊
The very best explanation/detailed instructions for top down I have ever seen! I have been knitting my entire life… Now in my senior years… And I’m so excited to knit your beautiful malamute pattern! So pleased to have discovered you. Your entire presentation is as clear, patient and detailed, your voice is pleasant and clear! Very excited to knit this beautiful garment. And look forward to future podcast podcasts with you.
Thank you so much for your lovely message! It means a lot to hear such kind feedback, especially from a lifelong knitter. I look forward to sharing more with you soon! 💖🌸
I made this sweater twice, once with the crew neck and once with a turtle neck. They both turned out great! I had a slight problem with the cast off at the bottom of the first sweater. Even though I thought I was casting off loosely, I notice a little tightness at the hem as I'm putting it on. So on the second one I added a yarn over every 10 stitches as I cast off. This was perfect! I'm looking forward to wearing them both this winter. Julia, thanks so much for the video! :)
Awesome job on those sweaters 😊! That's a great tip about the yarn overs for a looser cast-off. Thank you for sharing!
I am now knitting the second sweater......such a nice pattern thanks💃👍
so nice your videos.........so important
Thank you so much! So glad you're enjoying the pattern and the video tutorial. 😊 Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
I have made close to 60 sweaters which I love them all!!! I’ve never watched a tutorial and after watching this I bought the working sheets and pattern!!! I’m excited to work this one up! Great instructions and inspiration. Thanks 😊
Impressive! Hoping to reach at least half that number one day. Thanks a lot for your kind words and support. Happy knitting! 😊
I just bought the pattern this evening and started working on a new sweater immediately. The pattern is super easy to follow, and a joy to work on my needles, thank you so much! You're right, I will be making two :)

Thank you very much for your time & making this video to share, super detailed, perfectly for beginners. I've knit mostly beanies/hat, too intimidated to start a sweater; however, your video give me hope, definitely going to start this project & get your pattern!
Thank you for your kind words! As a former beginner myself, I understand how the idea of knitting a whole sweater can be a bit daunting.

I bought the pattern today, did my swatch US 7&9 Cascade 220 superwash - perfect.

I agree completely! I worry myself out of some possible enjoyment time. I don't know why I can't stop lol
I love the tally charts. I'm going to read the pattern over really well while my swatch is drying. Looking forward to using them. So far, pre-booking I'm size up needles too.

the only tip I have for you is to put two makes together at the beginning of the ow make. it makes it easier to tell where the real beginning is.
Thank you for the tip 😊
I've already bought the BOR markers, and I'll be sure to use them in my next knitting tutorial. Appreciate the advice!

Thanks for sharing!
Just added the pattern in my shopping cart❤
You're very welcome! Thrilled you enjoyed the design and tutorial ❤️
I just found your channel. Love your precise explanations and great videography (close-up shots of what you're doing in good lighting). I would like to see the special techniques filmed or displayed at a slower speed so I can see exactly how/where you're picking up stitches, etc. I am a novice knitter and the slower pace would help me. I am a new subscriber now! I also bought your pattern and will rewatch this video as I knit my first! Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words and joining my channel!
I've created a playlist that breaks down each technique th-cam.com/play/PL2TIEWhGJrLy1anGQtxRUxve3vhe8wYCH.html&si=7zRFdCC5TTO6wrRu.
Originally, my plan was to add specific links as we progressed in the tutorial. However, due to limitations, I could only include a few links to the entire tutorial.
Thrilled to have you as a new subscriber! If you have knitting questions, feel free to reach out. Happy knitting, and thanks for your support! 😊
I saw your tutorial for the warm weather shirt version which got me here. I purchased yarn previously and wanted to see if it was even in the ballpark for gauge. Bought both patterns, just completed swatch, pre-blocking and worked in a faux in the round, row gauge is fine, had a half to 1 stitch too many in st count. I was using size US9 not 8 and brushed alpaca silk and Fingering merino held double. It's going to be worn over a dress I'm making to go to my neices wedding. I don't mind the open ish fabric. I think it's going to bloom quite a bit after blocking and I'm probably going to come up short.
The brushed alpaca silk and merino blend sounds like a luxurious choice! Can't wait to see how it all comes together! Feel free to share a pic of the finished project if you get a chance. 😊
Just found you, great tutorial and I will be adding this pattern to my list. Thanks so much!
You are very welcome 🌷

@@vskywarkI do love that feature and the 2 finger zoom in is another favorite to see some things easier.
Thanks so much for this video! I am going to try adjusting/calculating for a lighter weight yarn. Any suggestions?
You're very welcome! I'm thrilled to hear that you found the video helpful.
Adapting the pattern for a lighter weight yarn is a fantastic idea.
Your main focus should be on aligning the 2 by 2 ribbing on the neck with the 2x2 rib stitch raglan lines.
Specifically, ensure that 2 knit stitches from the neck align with 2 knit stitches of the each raglan line.
Happy knitting!
Excellent camera work
Thank you! Glad you noticed it 😊
Is there any chance of there being a pattern in the future for Dk version. This sweater is beautiful. Love the raglan and side details. I'm fairly new to garment knitting.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! While I currently don't have plans to modify this pattern for different weight yarn, I do have 2 upcoming sweater designs specifically designed for DK weight yarn. Stay tuned for updates! 😊
@@knitwithesenique thank you so much for your reply. I'll keep an eye out for your new designs.
I purchased both yarn and pattern. I am thinking to make the crew neck sweater using a folded neck ribbing....What do you think?
That sounds fantastic! Just a heads-up, when adjusting the stitch count for the neckline and the start of the yoke, make sure the total number of cast-on stitches is divisible by 4. Additionally, each raglan line should have 10 stitches, and every part of the sweater (back, front, sleeves) should be divisible by 4, plus an additional 2 for symmetry.
Grazie mille ❤❤❤
❤ Molto volentieri! Sono felice che ti sia piaciuto! ❤
I have just begun the mellow mood jumper but I was wondering if I should add some rows at the front as well as the back before starting to knit the body of garment. (I have a 34f bra size) ? It looks lovely as I am knitting. Thanks for all the work you’ve put in to produce pattern and video, although I am an experienced knitter the video is invaluable.
Hello, thank you so much for your feedback ☺️ No, there is no need to add additional rows in the front. But you can try on the knitted piece after you will divide for the Body and Sleeves 🌷
Gorgeous! Do you have a v-neck version? Raglan is stunning but a crew neck does not work for everyone and is personal preference. I know some patterns incl. both options since it’s only minor adjustments. Question therefore, if I purchase your pattern is the v-neck option included? Thank you.
Hello,
Thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, the v-neck is not included in this pattern. It's a topic for another video tutorial😊.
Do you have a tutorial for how you join the new skein? It goes too fast for me in this video! Thanks 😊

Thanks for the lovely video tutorial what wool did you use for this pattern 🙏 thanks
Thank you for your kind words! I used Drops Nepal and Drops Alaska for this project. However, please note that Alaska might be a bit itchier for those sensitive to wool. All the essential details, including the yarn information, are available in the description under the video. Feel free to check it out! 😊
I didn’t choose a good bind off for 2x2 rib….when I tried it on it was horribly tight…i guess I can still trust and block the sweater and get a little bit of stretch out of it, but next time I make the sweater I will use an Italian bind off or Jenny’s stretch bind off….
I gently stretch the stitches while binding off. The Italian bind-off is fantastic, but it's quite difficult to unravel if you need to adjust the length after wet blocking 🤗
🌟 IMPORTANT UPDATE: Dear friends,
In the process of designing the His Mellow Mood sweater (men's version), I've found that *a more fitted BOTTOM RIBBING* looks fantastic.
For detailed explanations and confidence in trying this out, check out more information on Instagram @esnq.knit and Facebook facebook.com/esnqknit
Rest assured, all this updated information is now incorporated into the new version of the knitting pattern (from November 29). I've sent the updated copy to all buyers from Ravelry and Etsy.
Thank you for your continued support!
Warm regards,
Julia

Can you use a cable cast on for the under arm sleeve stitches?
I haven't personally tried a cable cast-on for underarm stitches myself. However, the beauty of knitting is that you can experiment! So feel free to give it a try and see what works best for you.
Hi julia
Im knitting the light version mellow mood ....so fun !
Question . If i decide to try the i-cord bind off .....does it curl? , should I knit a little longer before doing i-cord bind off? I have not tried this before. Thx for your help
Hello, typically, i-cord doesn't curl. In fact, it helps prevent the stockinette stitch fabric from curling.
So you don't change your needle size back after going down a size in the body section until the ribbing
Hello, you might be referring to the Short Rows at the end of the Yoke. I use a needle one size down only for the Wrong side of the Short Rows to maintain an even fabric. Usually, purl stitches are looser than knit stitches, and going down a size helps keep them tight.
After the Short Rows, I switch back to the regular size 5.5 mm needle and knit until the bottom ribbing.
Очень красиво !
Спасибо большое ☺️
I knit left handed. Do I reverse the left and right leaning stitches for the increases?
Hi there! To double-check the left-handed knitting technique for your increases, I recommend knitting a swatch first. Try casting on 20 stitches and working a 2x2 rib for 4 rows. Then:
Row 5: knit 5 sts, place marker, knit 10 sts for the raglan line, knit 5 sts.
Row 6: purl all stitches.
Row 7: knit before marker, M1L, slip marker, work 10 sts as k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, slip marker, M1R, knit to the last stitch.
Row 8: purl all stitches.
Repeat rows 7-8 for the swatch.
This should give you a better feel for how the increases work with left-handed knitting. If it doesn't seem to work well, feel free to go back to the original instructions. Happy swatching and let me know if you have any questions! 🧶
Have you released the version of this sweater for MEN yet? I'd love to do this one for my husband.
Hello! You can purchase the pattern on my website www.esenique.com. The men's version is identical to the women's version, with just some slight variations in sizing. So, the video tutorial for the women's version will be perfectly helpful for you!
I do not get why when doing the first round (sculpting ) I end up with 2 stitches. I started with 80 but before placing marker #4 are we suppose to do the increases? Mine does not add up!
It sounds like you might have missed working Round 0! 😊 That should fix the stitch count issue. I sent you a more detailed explanation through Etsy messages.
very very lovely. how ca I blocked the sweter, please?( if you have a tutorial, please lat mee know, thankyou)

Thank you so much for kind words!
To block your knitted piece:
1. Fill a sink with luke-warm water and add some gentle detergent.
2. Submerge the garment and let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then rinse it carefully.
3. Squeeze out as much water as possible, wrap the garment in a towel, and lay it flat on a new towel to dry.
4. Finally, use an iron with steam on the lowest setting to finish the process.

I knit knitted knockers for donation and use 100% Ultra Pima cotton yarn. It feels so wonderful. It comes 100 gr/ 3.5 oz / 200 yards/ 200 meters. 22-24 stitches = 4 inches (10 cm) using US 5 or 6 (3.75 -4.0) needles. Is it possible to use this yarn for this sweater? If so with a 41 inch bust size, how much should I purchase? I’d really appreciate your thoughts and help. Thank you.
Hi there! Thank you for sharing the details about the Ultra Pima cotton yarn. 😊 Considering its thinner nature and the difference in gauge, it might not be the best match for this specific sweater project. To ensure the perfect fit, I recommend going for a yarn that aligns with the pattern's gauge of 16 sts x 22 rows on 5.5 mm needles.
No worries, though! If you're up for it, I'd be happy to suggest some yarns that would work like a charm. Check the description under this video for more details. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance. 🧶
Is the raglan measured after the neckline or including?
Yes, the raglan line starts after the Neck, in the Yoke.
@@knitwithesenique Thank you

Will any weight Aran weight mostly wool yarn work for this sweater? The listed ones are SO expensive. It will cost me more than $150mto make this sweater 😮
You can choose any yarn that has 70-80 meters in a 50-gram skein, similar to Drops Nepal or Drops Alaska, which I used. Alternatively, select a yarn with a knitting tension of 10 x 10 cm = 17 sts x 22 rows 🌸
Hello
How will I know if underarm will fit after completing the first increase rounds before splitting for sleeves ? Thank you!!
Hello, you can put body stitches on hold, and start knitting a sleeve.
@knitwithesenique I'm 2nd guessing if I should have made a medium. Chest around measures 35, 5'3 tall, 130 ilbs. My raglan didn't hit the required number, so I'm working few more Inc rounds without increasing and will see if underarms meet comfortably. Hope I'm on the right tract doing this.
Hey! I bought the pattern and I started knitting, but the raglan lines did not align straight on my sweater even if I really paid attention to the number of increases.
I started the sweater again and at the first control point I notice the same thing. What confuses me is that I do not understand what I am doing wrong. Has it happened to you? Or can you think of anything I could do?
Thanks! ❤
Hello, please send photos to my email info@esenique.com 🌷
I just bought the pattern and have a question. On the short row section, you switch the needle one size smaller when working on the wrong side. I myself unfortunately don’t have an interchangeable needle, can I use the same size needle? Do you have any recommendation?
Hello, this is just a tip for even knitting.
You can work the both sides with the same size needle.
Question on rds 1 and 2. I repeat those rds until I have x no of rnds and x number of sts and approx so many inches. Will I measure everything including neck ribbing or just the completed 2 rds? Pg 7. Thx again !!!
Don't want to give away your pattern info
The yoke measurement does not include the neck. It starts at the very first round where the stitch count begins to increase for the shaping of the yoke.
@@knitwithesenique perfect, thank you. Almost there :-)
previous: markers and row.
I purchased the mellow mood pattern thru revelry but did not get the download for the knitting planner. How do I get it?
Thanks for reaching out! In each Ravelry order, there are 5 files, including both color and black-and-white versions of the knitting planner. I've also resent it to your email. Please check your inbox, spam, or promotions folder. If you need further assistance, let me know. Happy knitting! 😊
Hi
When making gauge swatch. It should measure the 6.5 in total length when completed and the specified number of stitches across to get 4 inches ? Is this correct ? Thx !!!!!! Trying so hard here :-)
You've got it exactly right! The swatch should measure 6.5 inches long, and have the specified number of stitches across to get 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles (5.5 mm in this case).
@knitwithesenique I started knitting. The neck looks so small. Is this how it should be ....or should I switch to a size medium? Using suggested yarn drops, Nepal thx for your help!
@@peaches7551 if your tension is correct, the neckline will be wider.
@@knitwithesenique thx so much. I'm doing another swatch. Don't trust myself. Hugs
Don't worry, even if the gauge isn't perfect, it should still work out because of the positive ease in the pattern. 🙂
Since this sweater is for men, is it knitted extra on the back or will it be knitted from the front for women?
No, because this sweater is designed with positive ease, there's no need to add extra width to any part. 🌷
@@knitwithesenique thank you
just wondering there is no german short rows sorry to ask I am a beginner
Indeed, no German Short Rows here :) However, to ensure the perfect fit, a few additional rows for the back are essential. Without them, the back part might end up shorter, and the neckline could have a fold-something we'd all prefer to avoid :)
Given that this sweater is designed with beginners in mind, we'll keep it simple by adding just 10 rows back and forth at the end of the Yoke.
Please refer to the 18:22 timestamp for a clear demonstration.
How could I translate this pattern to bulky yarn?
@@mevsv6103 Thank you for your question! Adapting the pattern for bulky yarn requires adjusting stitch counts and implementing a compound raglan method. The challenge lies in the 10-stitch raglan line. It's crucial to swatch with your bulky yarn beforehand.
Can anyone give me an estimate on how many hours this took them to make?
The time it takes to complete this sweater can vary based on individual knitting speed and experience 😊. On average, it might take anywhere from 25 to 40 hours to knit, depending on the size. It's important to enjoy the process and take breaks as needed.
I knitted size S in approximately 24 hours, using 1 skein (50 grams) in about 2 hours.
What is the gauge please? Love this pattern❤️🇨🇦
Hello 😊 GAUGE is 16 sts x 22 rows in a 10x10 cm (4x4 inches) piece in Stockinette stitch (after blocking).
You can find additional information in the video description below. 🌟
The yarn is a superfine right?
I used Drops Alaska in the tutorial and Drops Nepal for the beige sweater. You can find additional information in the description below the video 🌷
Thank you for this super helpful tutorial. I am a beginner knitter and have only knitted a sweater prior to this so maybe I’m not doing it correctly but I get a very noticeable pattern when I go back and forth with knitting on the right side and purling on the wrong side for the short rows compared to when I knit in the rounds. Is that supposed to show that much? TIA @knitwithesenique
You're very welcome!
Is your knitted fabric turning out uneven? Feel free to send me a photo at info@esenique.com
@@knitwithesenique Thank you for your reply. I’ve just emailed you a picture of the back of my sweater so you can see what I mean.
Where can I buy the yarns
Hello, you can find the list of recommended yarn in the description below this video or in the knitting pattern.
Thank you for answering. I’ll start this project as soon as I got new ink for my printer.
