This movie was fascinating to me and it was the movie that proved to me that I can't trust reviews when it comes to horror movies. There are plenty of movies that people say aren't good that I've enjoyed and 13 Ghosts is one of my favorites. I still wish we could have an in depth book made detailing the lives, descent into madness (for some), and death of the 13 spirits.

I enjoyed this movie a lot. Matthew Lillard was great in this role and the visuals/makeup is incredible. Sure, the CGI needed some work, mostly in the scene where the kids were surrounded by swirling rings, but overall it looked great and had an easy to follow story.

If I had any complaint about this movie, it was when the father jumps into the rings to be with his children. Ghosts killing people, cool. House made of moving glass panels, stunning. Glasses that let you see the dead, why not. Jumping into a bunch of buzz saw rings with the timing of a master from the League of Assassins... no, just no. And yeah, the special effects of the rings were crappy.

      **SPOILER ALERT**
Kalina and Dennis (Embeth Davidtz and Mathew Lillard) were both working for Arthur’s (Tony Shalhoub) Uncle Cyrus and both seem to want to help the Kriticos family.
Then, out of absolutely fucking nowhere, Kalina turns out to still be working for Cyrus. I don’t know. I couldn’t suspend my disbelief because of what was, in my opinion, poor execution.

    • @yukinagato6761
      @yukinagato6761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

NOW thats something i been trying to pitch Tonys part with the death of his wife would be hard as they so all look different now . But seeing a hour long series on a stream service would rock . Th13teen Ghost . each episode covers the back story and then a flash to the present with Cyrus catching each one Maybe the opening episode is while now a boring trope as Disney now has a habit of making the villain have a tragic back story . a Reason why Cyrus wants to be Immortal . maybe his wife died and the Occularus Inferminum is a key to a much bigger machine that is revealed in a actual sequel that like 20 some years later the New Occularus would activate on its own .
We have a much older Arthur 20 some years later visiting the old house. he has been collecting the items which catch nice prices on auctions. many which are still intact. His family is now comfortable thank to investments and such from the stuff from teh house . Thankfully teh hosue was never vandalized as it was a secret location far from prying eyes.
. he explores the basement and finds teh case it has the money still and find the book . he contacts Dennis Rafkin's brother a Twin who has teh same gift. they go thru the book and discover that in order for teh Occularus to work there has to be a much bigger machine to run and its scheduled to activate 24 years after the date of teh original activating and this one would open hell itself . its a race against time to locate it and also there is a Mystery as to tools that would in fact kill the 13 Ghost as well Cyrus now a Ghost but Arthurs wife moved on.
part of teh movie could have the 13 Ghost starting a path of destruction to teh new machine Mysterious unsolved deaths as it calls to them with teh chants

It's a tragedy he wasn't the lead in Titanic, and really most movies Leo and Christian Bale stole from him. His portrayal of Shaggy in Scooby-Doo was so heart wrenching it brought me to tears. This has got to be one of my favourite horror movies, ever made. Great job with this video, Minty.
I must say that I didn't know about the house being created in CGI. I always thought that they had created a physical version of it so they could get those outside shots of it, and then filmed the rest in a sound stage.
I think they did a great job with the Black Zodiac ghosts... and from all the stories, my favourite is still the Hammer and the Angry Princess (though, I have to point out that the story regarding the Dire Mother and Great Child, the one you told is not the one that's in the original European DVD's extras. In that one, it's stated that Margaret Shelbourne was just crushed to death by her son, who ended up dying of starvation). Oh, and for the record, I didn't feel sick when watching the movie. I usually applaud it... and it's really a shame that after 20 years, nobody has decided to take this movie's story to the next level, by producing a TV series that deals with both the house and each of the ghosts (I mean, I would pay good money to have that happening... and just out of curiosity, to play the part of Cyrus in this series, I woudl probably cast David Lynch. Don't ask me why, I just feel that he would make a great excentric villain).
And about being a box-office and critical disaster, I think the critics just didn't understand the movie, and that it was ahead of its time. If it had come out a few years later, around the time that first Saw movie came out, it would've been just as praised at it. Maybe not for the same reasons, but like I said, it's a movie that was ahead of its time.
Also, just pointing it out, that you should've added that Matthew's connection with Scooby-Doo still lasts today, because he eventually went on to become the official voice od Shaggy (starting with the direct-to-DVD movie "Scooby-Doo: Abracadabra-Doo"), becoming Casey Kasem's heir to the character's voice, when he retired.

The second ghost scene (where the ghost burst into flames , become a spinning fire wheel and attack the father. That scene was it. In spite of my older brother laughing at me I got up and walked out. I wasn’t alone. The next time I would see it I would be 19 and working in a movie theater as an assistant projectionist. Since at that time there were no glasses to pass out we had to put the red filter in front of the camera lens. By the way this was not 3D. It was Illusionoo. And I have never see it being used anywhere else. When I was 35 I rented the original 13 Ghost to play for my two kids. 9 and 10. The only thing that could have made it even better would have been not only including the ghosts back story in more detail, BUT include HOW they got captured and why. The "WHY" is missing alot in this movie, but still a fantastic closer to a prequel that was never made.

I already knew about the 1960 original, prior to viewing this remake, some years ago, because of my mom. She showed it to me, one day after school, & told me about how it had scared her & several of my aunts, when they first saw it. I loved it too. I gotta be honest, upon viewing the 2001 remake, years ago, I was pretty bored, throughout, & don't remember much. However, Minty, after watching this video, you have convinced me to give it another chance. Speaking of the 2005 House of Wax, & the Orphan. Minty, i'd love to see you cover both of those in future 10 things you didn't know episodes.

I really liked this movie, even more than the original, and I also liked the original quite a bit. It definitely had its issues, especially the script and some lackluster performances, and you're 100% right the editing was a mess, but the art and character design more than made up for it. The ghosts themselves were genuinely scary looking, though you really needed to see the DVD bonuses showcasing the backstory of the ghosts, to get the full effect.
I think the crazy, disjointed editing was trying to set a different kind of atmosphere, trying something kinda new and different for a horror movie, and it just did not work as intended. Likewise, the director did a great job shooting it and putting all the elements together, but it also looks like he lacked the necessary skills to get good performances out of most of the actors. With the exception of Mathew Lilliard of course, who is pretty much always great and always steals every single scene he has ever been in, in his entire storied career. Perhaps the director should return to the craft and fold, but take the Monty Python route where they had two directors, one to set up and shoot the shots, and another to motivate and direct the actors to get the best performance possible.
I will echo a number of the other comments on this vid, and say this story could and probably should be retouched again, but in the streaming tv format. A 13 or 14 episode series showcasing the ghosts backstory, so you can go deeper in on each one and make some more decent horror based on that. As that is where the DVD really went on to shine, and was the best part of it. Perhaps with an extra episode showcasing the Uncle and how he came to be the way he was, and perhaps how he put the whole damn house, ghost confinement and mechanism together, as I think that also could still become an interesting backstory companion to this now 20+ year old movie.

Like others I would love to see a series maybe on a streaming service with each episode dedicated to a different ghost. The first season could be all about the unfortunate people dying to become The ghost and the second season could be about catching them. Mind you it would have to be a good enough story for each coast to warrant two episodes. Otherwise, maybe just one season with the creation and eventual capture of each coast per episode.
