    Good to see that these machines are still in use today and that more and more young farmers are ditching the million dollar computerised machines in favour of the classic long lasting machines.

    I remember the days when farmers had self propelled combines in the early sixties, which I thought was really neat. I was still using a pull type Massey Harris. In my 20's I started using an International 101. I found out sitting up on the platform right behind the header with no cab was not so great after all. THANK GOD for air conditioned cabs!
    I noticed the New Holland turned around on the lawn. if I did that my grandmother would have shot me right on the spot!

    When I was growing up, I'm 65 now, my grandfather has a massy 300 then up graded to the tr70. Never picked corn just harvested oats and soybeans. He ear picked corn with a mounted 2 row picker on a farmall then upgraded that to a deere mounted on a 4010. He was a dairy farmer that came from Iowa to Minnesota with a cow, a hog, 38 cents in his pocket and my grandmother! That was 1938 and he farmed until he was 88. Tough old dude!

    My first combines were two case 600 one had a grain head and the other had a two row corn head. Grain head combine had no cab the corn head machine had a cab. Gas engine’s no luxury but got the job done. I’ll never forget the good old days!

      Case combines were popular in the area I grew up in. With in 3 miles of my house was a Case 1060, 660 and 600 on three different farms. I am always on the hunt to film Case combines. I have filmed a 600, 960, 1160 and 1660.

    The 3300 was neat to see. A guy near us had one with a Cab, and he had the M&W kit added to the head that was supposed to keep beans feeding nicer.
    The 6600 has always been my favorite, I grew up riding in one and purchased one this year as a working toy, I plan to harvest wheat with it this coming year

    I enjoyed the video. I used to operate a 300 Massy Ferguson for a neighbour, and like the on in this video it had the Scour Klean unit on it. It's a shame that the technology fell out of favour, the Scour Klean removed a lot of weed seed from the fields. Plus were great for harvesting small seed like clover. Excellent video.

    Do the diamond stud tires work better in a hillside application?

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they do. You can order modern combines with Diamond turf tires for hillside applications today.

    We had a Massey 300 open station. Cockle bur's would hit ya right in the nose off the reel. Fun! I rode behind my dad. He would let me drive while he jumped off and walked around and checked behind us . Literally the first machine I ever drove by myself. I was 5.

      @999pr1 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had one, it was the first corn combine we had. Never drove it, my brother and I ran the NI mounted picker whenever we were home from school to fill cribs and my Dad and grandfather filled our first bins. They were put up in 1966, some of the first in our area. Eventually traded for a MF 510 which was the first combine I operated. Had problems, eventually went to JD, 6600, 6620 and 8820.

    Anyone have an idea why the first hillside Deere unit runs turf style tires VS lug tires? I’d guess better traction but if the tread fills with some mud wouldn’t it slide sideways down the slope? Just curious.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  ปีที่แล้ว

      The turf tire surprisingly grips better. You will see even on modern hillside combines rear turf tires and maybe even front dual turf tires.
      I bought a lawn and garden tractor with ag tires and a snow plow and wow I will run right through the snow. All the ag tires do is spin and spin. The tractor will not move an inch with out chains. I have seen models on turf tires with no chains cruise through the snow.

    I'm not sure you can apply the label "classic" to a combine that has a cab and a folding unloading auger. Only the JD 45 would qualify in my book.
    I was hoping to see a JD 55 like the ones we used when I was growing up on a farm in northern California, harvesting barley and corn.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything over 25 years old is considered classic. The 1970’s combines are approaching 50 years old quickly.
      I did not film a 55 this year but I do have a video posted on a 55EB at th-cam.com/video/N8vMvQNdheo/w-d-xo.html

    • @bigtractorpower

      It was harvesting oats. When oats dry down they often have weeds and grass grow up in them.

    Thats a C2 Gleaner, made from 64 to 67. The flairs on the grain bin is the difference. From 60 bu on the C to 85 bu on the C2. Would like to see more Gleaners on the channel!

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I took a guess and was worried it was a C2. There were no decals on the combine showing it was a C or C2. I guessed based on the shape of the rear end. Thank you for the information. I am glad to report two C62 Gleaners were filmed for BTP this year that will be published next July. My local dealer has two 100th Anniversary Gleaners in order so they are a top priority for 2023 filming.

      No. Hillco builds kits for several modern combines to run hillsides.

      Case-IH has leveling cleaning area, others may also. That is adequate for midwestern use, but would not be enough for the Palouse area out west.

    My dad had a 3300 with a cab, I think it was a 1970. Does Turbo mean that one had a diesel? I thought they were all gas, and I definitely don't remember any without a cab. He traded it for a 1972 4400 in 1974.
