I think both women put a lot of feeling into.the song, but as you pointed out, each had different feeling, and of course we all read ourselves into the interpretation. I've been that woman in Lara's version and choose never to be that again. I much prefer to envision myself as a woman in Floor's version, at this (an older mature) point in my life. It's what make music great!

Just be careful next time when you compare songs, Floor and Nightwish are not controlled by one of the big 3 music companies (Warner, Universal or Sony) so they will almost never give you copyright problems but at least 80% of all the other artists (like Lara)are in way connected to those three and they control the blocking (youtube provides them the tools). Especially Warner is a very active blocker.

I have known the original version with Lara Fabian for several years. It's a beautiful version, but melancholy / sad. As you said, in Floor Jansen's version the energy is different, more constructive I would say. Certainly not resigned.
Thanks for the comparative analysis, I say it is a success.

Yeah, they took different approaches on how to present the music, as you said, melencholy vs higher energy. But both performance were amazing.

I love that you did this versus just reacting to Floor's blind. Though I think hearing Lara sing this live may've been a closer comparison. This studio version actually softens it, she's usually more intense and you can really tell Floor drew from that. Even if you don't react to it, it's definitely worth a listen!

The original is a work reconstructed by Remo Gaziotto, allegedly from a fragment of the manuscript he found in the Saxon State Library and ascribed to Tomaso Albinoni [1671-1751] (whose biography Gaziotto was researching at the time [he also published a biography of Vivaldi] in his role as Professor of the History of Music at the University of Florence), although the fragment was so small that the work is considered his and was published in 1958 and the Copyright is held by Giazotto's estate, as he died in 1998.
I led an orchestra playing it in about 1975, so instantly recognised it, although not from Lara Fabian, Yngwie Malmsteen, or any of the multiple versions used in films and TV series. I read the sheet music, first the score, then my lead violin part.
I had heard Malmsteen's version, then Floor''s so looked the others up.

Nice reaction, Lara Fabian is a personal favourite of mine(as is Floor) she is a petite woman from Belgium, the french speaking part, and sings in a very emotional way..I can’t explain it in another way..Floor is a powerhouse, but this song is combination between those two, loved it❤️❤️

If you do reactions to Lara Fabian , please do live performances, they’re a lot better . Lara is a very emotional singer ( je suis malade is a song you need to watch) and has a beautiful voice. Floor, although also great, reminds me of a lot of other female singers, Lara is different.

  • @apparition13
    @apparition13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I really enjoy your reactions, for example your analysis of how Floor shifting the emphasis in the chorus to Let it go from 'let it go' to 'here I stand' is the single most insightful thing I've heard anyone say about her cover, but I have a couple suggestions here.
    1. If you are going to compare someone you don't know to someone you know, a loose rule of thumb is to listen to the version from the person you don't know first. There is a natural tendency to be biased to what you hear first, and if you listen to someone you already like first it doubles the bias, making it that much more difficult to 'hear' the other version for what it is. Since you're already a huge Floor fan, in this case I think you would have been better served listening to Lara first so you could hear the song 'pure' without comparing it from the start to Floor.
    2. I'd also suggest listening to each song by itself rather than intercutting. Song arrangements build differently, and listening to different arrangements chopped up like this makes it really really difficult to get a feel for the intended flow of the song. A consequence here was that the feel of Lara's version at the beginning is different from the feel at the end; the flow of the emotional journey of her Adagio from fragile to not so fragile was disrupted by comparison with Floor's very different arrangement. It also makes it difficult to compare the arrangements, like you did so well with Let it go, since you don't hear the arrangement uninterrupted.
As for Lara, I'm just a fan, not a fanboy, but as you could tell she has an absolutely stunning voice. So speaking as not a fanboy, this version of 'je suis malade' th-cam.com/video/dVvlmpo5g9k/w-d-xo.html might be the best live performance of any song I've ever heard because of the emotionality she brings to it. Maybe even better than Heart covering 'stairway to heaven' in front of Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center Honors th-cam.com/video/LFxOaDeJmXk/w-d-xo.html.
If it wasn't clear, I was hinting you should react to both the videos I linked to. :) I'd love to hear your insight on both performances. Both also get a lot of reactions, so they tend to do well for viewership. ;)

I love both versions. But the interpretation of the song belongs to Laura. She wrote it in the first place.
Floors version is a cover with her own interpretation. So to ask who's version is better is not relevant.

Wrote it in the first place? Maybe the words, certainly not the music, which is "Albinoni's Adagio" or "Adagio in G minor by Albinoni, arranged by Giazotto", which I led an orchestra in playing in about 1975.
I'd never heard any words to it, although I had heard an interpretation by Yngwie Malmsteen, which is 15 years older.

Thanks Michael, I see that Phil just commented on this as well, but i was going to just repeat what he informmed me of on a different comment. So leaving the origination of the music out of the equation, I will agree, but versions were amazing to me, both women really went to town on it. But if I had to pick a version to listen to, I would go with Floor's, not becasue it's better but because I like that kind of Sassy attitude that she added to the music a bit more that the delicate approach that Lara took.

For starters there's no winner here. Lara's version is flawless, a girl vulnerable and sad, keeping it low and breathy until knocking it out on the last part. Floor as we know, is a perfectionist. Hair style, makeup and clothing has to be right to reflect where she's going with the song. As for doing covers, the point is to make a song your own, and Floor knows that she probably can't sell herself as frail and vulnerable. So she attacks the song from the start, even in the soft passages, as a strong woman missing the feeling of being in love, rather than the guy who obviously left. She amps up the power a little earlier than Lara, but very controlled, before going full powerhouse at the end. That's how you do a cover ! Love both versions !

    Hi Chanda,
Nice! I think you need to do more of these comparisons!
Lara is an exceptional singer, as is Floor, but there is one substantial difference for me, personally, and you can actually add Dimash to this comparison as well, IMO.
Dimash: great singer, very technical, and really showing off how good he technically is all the time, but personally, I do not get touched by his singing. Lara: I get oocasionally touched, occasional goosebumps, with "Je suis malade" probably most intense so far. However, with Floor: spine chills and goosebumps all the time, and with Adagio, it is chills and goosebumps upon goosebumps from beginning to the end. There is no other singer which actually manages to achieve that when I listen to a song. No other singer other than Floor pierces my soul and touches my heart as she does, all the time, every time.
You did find the best performance of Lara for this song, BTW. The others I have seen were not as good iMO :). Funnily enough she is dressed kinda like Floor when she does metal , with the black leather coat / dress . Even then, goosebumps a few times, and as mentioned, with Floor, chills and goosebumps continuously, and often tears too.
BTW, saw one other comparison, and although Floor's interpretation is completely different, they hit exactly the same notes at the same time in the song.
And yes, I think you expressed it very well, Lara like Whitney, and Floor like Aretha, and JHud. Very good comparison, I would totally agree!
    Enjoyed your reaction very much!
    Love, warm regards, Wim

What sets her apart is her rock-solid technique at low volume/slow tempo as well. Very difficult. I've come to think of her as something like a vocal chameleon: her control is so precise, she can change her timbre/breathiness/brightness/placement etc on command to convey _exactly_ what she wants to about the emotional heart of each story. I think Floor can still learn from Lara as to how to put even more feeling into a song. And I'm a HUGE Floor fan (she is number one because of her versatility) but if you listen to Lara singing live you'll know what I mean.

Sorry to say but what you are saying is complete nonsense, if there is anyone who can put emotions in a song it’s Floor, she has showed this in so many songs. If you knew Floor more you would have known she will never try to copy the original versions and will always give a different twitch to the song. I am convinced in this song she could have changed it easily in the same emotional way as Lara did, but I am happy she did not because now we have two equally wonderful versions as perfectly described by Sean and its to the listeners which version they prefer.

@@robbo8013 I know and love Floor very well, but in this case Lara emotes much more then Floor in this particular song (in Lara's live performances) which is not strange because it is her song. In my opinion what you write is not thought through.

@@Meine.Postma i respect your opinion and nothing wrong in preferring Lara’s version , just like Sean preferring Floor’s version, but what triggered me to write this comment was your statement Floor can learn from Lara because she puts more emotions in a song. That sounds like a general statement and not just this song and that I do not agree at all.

Not getting in the middle of this one, but what I think I can say, is that Floor would agree, we can constantly learn and improve what we do. I don't know much about Lara, so can't say she would agree or not with that. Also just to make a quick note about my preference of Floors take on this, it's not down to a technical ability or talent, it more that I like that Sassy Attitude sort of feel that Floor put in her presentation. But both versions really are amazing, especially the way that Lara ended her version.

I couldn't pick a favorite, they are both amazing performances, just quite a bit different in they way the presented the music, and to be fair that says alot as I would normally just pick a Floor version of anything. :)

Personally, this song doesn't appeal to me, even though both of them are great singers. I've heard some Lara Fabian's songs but everything I get from her is always sorrow, melancholy and I find it boring. I've seen Je sois malade and sincerely makes me sleepy. Floor's version is a little more interesting but I don't like the song itself. The only thing about Floor's is that the lyrics seemed to be addressed to Marko, meaning you left but when you are ready you will come back. That's the feeling I get from Floor's, probably very subjective.

Hey Marcelo, thats cool, every type of music isn't for everyone. Is this the type of music I would normally listen to on my own, no not really, so I totally get where you're coming from. As for Lara, I'm not really experienced with her catalog, but i'm interested in checking some of it out for my own education, I will definitely check out Je Sois as that seems pretty heavily recomended. Also thanks for checking out the vid and leaving a comment :)
