I love Reeve and Pryor and although I dont dislike the film, it was a real letdown after Superman 2. I always felt Pryor was miscast. What I liked about it was the junkyard battle. That was classic. Very solid review Matt
I've always enjoyed this film, I agree with you. I do find the pacing a bit slow and it could have been tightened up in the editing room, particularly with the scenes with the villians, but Reeve and Pryor make this very enjoyable. Rip Christopher Reeve, such a charismatic and beautiful human being he was!
Never understood the hatred for this film. I think it is a great movie with a fun story. I would agree, I think it is my second favourite also. Great reviews so far.
Nice review. Even though, to me, it is a step down from the first two films, I enjoy this movie quite a bit and don't think it's nearly as bad as most people say it is. I will gladly watch this movie over Superman 4, Superman Returns (which I thought was okay), and the Zack Snyder films featuring Superman.
I first saw this when I was 9. I enjoyed the humor in this. I still watch the other points of view just out of curiosity. The junkyard fight was always worth the wait.
The robot transformation scene is genuinely one of the scariest scenes, and definitely a childhood trauma moment for sure. Right up there with Large Marge, Beetlejuice as a snake (or just about anything from Beetlejuice), The Thriller video...Michael Jackson with the cat-like eyes at the end and we hear Vincent Price's laugh at the end (not to mention the transformation scene, same as American Werewolf in London with the same growls and howls, and same director - i.e John Landis), Dan Aykroyd in the Twilight Zone movie ('wanna see something really scary?') as well as the demon rabbit, the entirety of Nightmare at 20,000 Ft but especially that gremlin, and also Nancy Cartwright being sucked into the cartoon world (ironic she would do the same thing later as the voice of Bart in one THOH segment). The poddling having his life drained, the Mystics, the Skeksis. And well...any and all sorts of 80s and 90s childhood moments that gave kids nightmares..
I always had a soft spot for this film. I use to rent it all the time back in the 80s! Some of the bits go on TOO long, like the drunken Pryor scene, or the army kryptonite speech. But Reeves actually gives his best performance as Superman here! Truly misunderstood.
Superman III was my first introduction to the superman movies. I can understand why people have a huge disdain for it. The slapstick comedy just wasn't needed at all. But overall it's an entertaining campy superhero film that does what a superman film is supposed to do.
Just to point out, that intriguing relationship dynamic between 2 loves(one for Clark and one for superman) you absolutely do have in The Quest for Peace(my favorite superman film)instead of,o'toole,it's,Hemingway& I enjoyed her comedic pursuit of Kent lol I also agree with you on this film, superman 3 being my 2 favorite :-) I too was terrified once the villian sister became a cybernetic nightmare!! Pryor was a great addition& I still want to play that game the computer was doing against the man of steel,AWESOME! As a child, after viewing the quest for peace,I was disappointed with 3 but one night,as a adult,I watched the film and it changed my opinion drastically in a positive way :-) there was always sequences I liked about 3 but as a adult& after that night,I admired the entire movie same as you :-)
Great movie. I think it might be better than 2 and equal to 1 if we are being honest. Compare it to the modern hero shit of today and its brilliant. Not why nerds or critics they would have issues with the slapstick humor given the previous two films always had that bruh. Nice change of pace from the second movie.
Richard Pryor was funny, Christopher Reeves is iconic as Superman as ever, Lana Lang was a solid romantic intrest, Evil Superman vs Clark Kent and of course the computer plot, of yeah great review of my personal favorite Superman flick
It's a great film but better than 2? Maybe it is. The action and humour is. The scene with ross the boss and gus on the phone always gets me. Drunk superman is great, so is the fight. "You always wanted to fly Kent, heres your chance" He does more in this film that was lacking in 2, so think your right. I luckily saw all 4 films in the cinema as I'm 47 and remember seeing 1 and 2 back to back in a double feature. Was never keen on superman 4, too preachy and the radioactive villain was poor. I'll give it another watch soon, maybe it will grow on me. Good review.
Saw this in the theatre in 83 I was 8, I've seen Superman 1-3 in theatres I was 3 almost 4 when I saw Superman the movie and I still Rember it, i thought Clark had better chemistry with Lana then Lous. I Rember the computer game with superman and the missle scene and always wanting to play a game like that . The graphics were amazing for back then, apparently tht cost big bucks to make tht computer scene. Also people forget Reeves had to really fly on harness hook ups and take off and land. No green screens back then.
Nah I don’t see no controversy Matt because I also like Superman 3. The shit you might get for this review reminds me of another third film that I love and that’s Batman Forever so I can relate. Superman 3 is fun and it’s not that bad. Good Superman vs evil Superman is the best part of the movie and it’s really awesome. And I would say that’s what saves the movie for me. I’ve seen a lot worse superhero movies. Superman 4, Batman and Robin, Spider-Man 3, BVS, and so on are a lot worse. Good review Matt
I don't give a damn! I've loved Superman 3 since I was 4 years old! It's laid back and fun! Plus! Chris Reeves plays an awesome Evil Superman! Very intense! Awesome finale as well!
Nice review again Matt. I actually also love Superman 3. For awhile like Ghoustbusters 2, I thought 3 was well received like its predecessors. So when I found out that people hated on Superman 3 it seemed kinda shocking to me. I never understood why it got so much hate. Granted, its has some goofy humor but like with you, it never bugged me(except for the opening and the part where Gus falls off of the building). I thought Richard Pryor was funny. Clark and Lana are great. Robert Vaughn is great as Ross and has a some memorable lines. Also Jimmy gets a bit more to do in this than he does in the others. It does help that this was the second Superman movie I saw. But I don't like Batman and Robin, and I saw that a lot when I was a kid. And I think another reason why the comedy never bugged me is cause the first two films had some goofy humor also, so I don't know what makes the humor bad. Glad you enjoy it also.
Great video, I agree Superman 3 was silly and not as good as the first two, but I still had fun with it. Interesting trivia, Annette O'Toole played Lana Lang in this, and later starred as Martha Kent on Smallville!
I've always had fun with this film, i don't love it as much as the first two but i still like it, i feel the exact same way about Batman Forever, but not Spider-Man 3, that movie actually sucked, Lol
Stallonefan03 i like Batman forever waaaaaay more than returns and Batman & Robin. Forever is my second favorite after the 89 one. Of the 4 older movies
I never understood the hate this gets. I too like it better than Superman II. Superman II has elements to it that never sat right with me. Supes just giving up his powers for some lovin' always seemed like a rash and undercooked plot development. It felt contrived in a way that didn't feel natural to the story. His conflict about loving Lois and being torn between his father's words about being Superman just kinda happen to rationalize the plot device of him losing his powers. There is no real drama to it. It didn't feel natural. Superman III, in many ways, is the most human Clark/Superman story of the original 4 films. The Smallville and Lana stuff is so good. Reeve is at his best in the role in Supes III. I will fight anyone on that, lol. We see Clark at his most vulnerable and human here in a way that is the most relatable to the audience. Pryor is awesome in anything. How this film got so much hate for having a fucking LEGEND like Pryor in the cast is beyond me. I LOVE the flavor he brings to the film. He has some real cute chemistry with Reeve. I think fans just need to learn that these older, pre-shared universe superhero films were made in a different time, a different era of filmmaking. Back in the late 70s and early 80s these were just...films. They weren't made with the modern studio mindset of epic franchises and shared universes. No, they were just movies. About Superman. Nothing more. And the crap this film gets for being "cheesy" just blows my mind. Sure, it's a bit more goofy than Superman 1 and II, but do ya'll REMEMBER those first 2 films? Nothing in Superman III is all that much more silly than what came before. Superman III isn't perfect, Duh. The villain is rather meh and I miss Kidder. The plot with the computer mumbo-jumbo does date the film as a strictly early 80s time capsule, but damn near every film dates at some point. Either you take films on their own terms or you don't.
I'll be honest Matt this film isn't all that bad actually.Richard Pryor was fun in the film. Christopher Reeve is amazing and his story with him struggling with his darker self culminating in that brilliant junkyard fight was really effective. The film does have a little too much cheese and comedy for me and at times like that crappy opening sequence seems unfit for a Superman film, but all in all its a decent film that gets trampled on too much for some reason.
I won't go into the negatives since its self explanatory so I'll just go over positives: things I like about this film 1. Christopher Reeves stellar performance as the Good and evil Superman 2. The Junkyard fight 3. The original story treatment of this film would have been worst because it would involve Braniac adopting Supergirl only to fall in love with her, writing Lois out of this film worst than in the actual movie because it completely writes her out of the franchise by saying that due he constantly being in contact with Superman and being in love but not being able to handle the pressure , she decided to move as far away as possible, and most of all Superman and Supergirl have a romantic relationship EVEN THOUGH THEIR FIRST COUSINS, I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP! Here's a link to the full Story treatment for Superman III: www.comicbookmovie.com/superman/a-review-of-the-original-superman-iii-treatment-a39421 With that said I would rather have a Superman movie that goes too over the top, as oppose to Man of Steel devoid of any humor, my problem with III is that it losses focus be on your Title character which Superman IV does not do and in my opinion is better than III.
I saw this when I was really really little around 2006 when I was 5 they where playing it on tv I'm guessing because superman returns was coming out at the time it was actually the first ever superman movie I ever watched before that I had only seen the old Max fleisher cartoons of superman on some random public domain dvd I got at the wearhouse it has been so long since I have seen superman 3 I flat out don't remember the plot I will have to give it a rewatch at some point
