I lived in Idaho Falls and worked for Mountain Bell during this tragedy ... Unless you experienced it first hand, you have no idea how devastating it was!

My father worked for Mountain Bell at this time, but in Colorado. It's nice to read your comment and to see Mtn. Bell featured so prominently here.

Gee, the background music in this documentary sounds like the stuff I used to hear in malls. It is too relaxed for such a tragedy.

Almost seemed like a pleasurable disaster.

I do not know why anyone would live down from a dam, ever.

I lived through this as resident of Idaho Falls. We spent three days sandbagging along the river trying to protect the hotels. I worked at the Stardust at the time of the floods and they paid us to sandbag along the riverfront. It was located along the river.

Teton dam collapse occurred just a month before I joined the Navy -- and lo, four years later, I'd find myself stationed in Idaho Falls for the Navy Nuclear Power Training Unit out at the INEL site. Arrived barely five months after Idaho Falls got about an inch of ashfall from Mt. St. Helens.

Broke on my 2nd birthday. My family were living in rigby at the time and were evacuated from our home. My mom saved all the paper clippings for me for when I got older to know what happened...

i later found my self in the basement of Rexburg high school cleaning asbestoes off of pipes so we could paint the pipes, at the time we didn't know how bad asbestoes was we knew it was full of dirt and had to go before we could paint,

My grandparents front door was only about a foot above the waterline in rexburg. They said they saw a neighbors house float right by their frong yard and turn the corner

this is one of the weirdest videos I've ever seen - the music is jarringly inappropriate, and the choice of interview clips make what should be a gripping tragedy into... I dunno what. Somebody said it's an ad for Bell? Bleah. So weird.

It's time for the dam to be rebuilt. The site has millions of dollars worth of infrastructure in place that can be used for the new dam. The site is perfectly suitable for a concrete gravity dam, not an earth fill dam.
The dam would provide power to thousands of people and be an extra source of water for the snake river when Palisades runs out, which has been happening for the past several years.

I lived in rexburg at the time. Now we dr right below the old dam in Wilford. My grandpa told them the dam wouldn’t hold. No one listened. This mistake took life later on to stress. Lost employment. It was a lazy stupid mistake .

My aunt was just telling me about how she attended Rick's college the semester after this happened. a geology professor there told a story about how he warned them that no matter how much concrete they poured into the rock there, the dam would break. Later he was away when it broke, but his wife had been stockpiling toilet paper as part of the mormon 2 year supply thing. The toilet paper absorbed all the water entering the basement saving their house.
I wonder was your grandfather a geology professor?

@@Arondight27 USGS did their job warning the Bureau of Reclamation that they were building in an area of unstable basalt/rhyolite bedrock; the cracks were obvious and numerous. But USBR decided they'd passed the point of no return in terms of their investment in it. Overall it was another in a long line of failures of the Federal Establishment -- but not by USGS or the local geologists in the area. They issued the warning and the warning was ignored.

By the time I was transferred to Idaho Falls by the Navy in 1980, one would've never known there'd _been_ a flood -- nor ash from Mt. St. Helens. I had a hard time picturing the old Riverview Hospital where my son was born having water lapping up against the entrance. My one dinner at the West Bank Hotel I was on the first floor looking out toward the Snake River and realized that if I had been sitting there 6 years earlier I'd have been shoulder-deep in water.

I want to see that guy running from that dump truck getting sucked into the dam. I watched that on tv in Mtn Home when I was 9. Cant believe he made it, he was sprinting to get away.
