I play mostly themed special events (but not too many weddings), so the genres I spin vacillate from gig to gig. The demographics at my gigs are also all over the place, and I've often found that mashups can help, in that I'll drop older cuts mashed with newer beats and please both the old and young.
@@digitaldjtips yup, and I've done that, too. And sometimes, you just can't please everyone. There's always at least one or two people that not only would refuse to dance to a mashup, but will yell at you for spinning an original 12" mix because it's not the same radio edit they're accustomed to. In my case, I try to ensure that the way I mix and the variety of my spins is part of my identity, so they know before they book what to expect. Then I work with the event planner to prep for the theme and crowd they're expecting. That being said, I do occasional weddings too, which are often cookie cutter events demanding the same playlist of popular wedding songs and not the right setting for mashups or experimentation.
Hi Phil, I missed the Live stream, I started at 13, I am 62 now. I played all the records 7", 12", and some LP's from New (Still have them all). I have done 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and now 00's. I have done Punk, ska, reggae, disco. pop. house, rap, Jungle, and Rave Ext: I moved from Vinyl to CD, MIni Disc, MP'3 and now MP4, as I am a Vintage Video DJ nowadays again from all Era's. But If a Hen night or Birthday party comes In drops a few Quid behind the Bar. I will Rave the place to the Ground. Just Love It.
Can I ask which kind of house DJs play. I'm stuck in my own headspace. I love anything with vocals. I'm always asked when I play music at an event (I'm not a DJ by the way) to play music with vocals. Which genres should I stick to. I love house music. Should I stick to house or also play deep House, tech House, funky House? We all know house is a diverse genre. But should I just play house itself, since the classic house genre has lots of different styles.
What you said around the 5 minute mark is true, for me at least. I mostly spin house & techno, but there are so many subgenres that fall under the house & techno banners, that I did find my style & sound, yet I do have a variety of things to play.
It will be great to have a interview with Paul van Dyk, Aly & Fila, Ferry Corsten....and ask them “How can play Trance & Progressive in professional career for 20 years and not get bored?” Thats the only music style I would be playing, if I was a DJ. Since I am not, so I listen to it for 20 years and still in love with it.
Found a great way to play multiple genres .... I mixed using all different tracks to the theme of “Rn’B” ... but challenge yourself by say Key or tempo ... I’m a Music Nerd first gay dj second .... played in many countries ...
Nice intro! Personnally, I cannot just play 1 genre.. I get bored of it! And once you know how to dj, it's the same for all! Learn the basic with one and then build-up your skills from there!!
I like to start with progressive house, then onto tech house & at prime time, techno & acid. Strobes, smoke, yellow smiley projection 😁 No weddings, no pop, hip-hop & no compromise. Of course, I have some mainstream remixed in tech house style etc & some acapellas but in the main, I follow my plan. Upfront about my style & so no disappointments. Only a hobby for me & so I'd rather play my style & have fun.
I think it's cool to go away with genres, but focus on a style, like making a set from adjetives, "dark" "tribal" "summer", etc. I find more interesting to view a set like that and use different genres to play around within the style i've chosen.
The short answer to your question is yes, but then you take on the responsibility of being that. Every weekend I wear a tshirt that says House Music, making it clear what my musical bent is. That doesn't mean I'm not there to entertain the crowd with whatever's required by them, no matter what the genre is. Case in point: at a bar I'm playing at, the crowd asked for dubstep. I knew very little about the music, but it make people dance, so I learned it. The hot track at the time was Skrillex's remix of Promises by Neo: cool song! I was standing there wondering what to do next. Thank God I learned math; dubstep was similar in speed and structure as some hip-hop tracks. The hot track at the time was Jay-Z and Kanye's new track Paris. The people heard the beginning riff of the song, and the place went up for grabs. Seems I've made a career of doing unusual mixes of genres that don't "go together" All it took was am open mind and basic math skills.
i just cant help myself.I love music period and thats how i approach my djing.I have done gigs where the genres have been hard house for instance but i have added a bit of hard trance trance and faster house with a bit of techno.Thats just one type of club.I have been known for being a good warm up dj.I have one persona but i dont do weddings etc.Because i have no reputation for being house or trance or otherwise i have always been free to stretch music policies a bit and warm ups are my natural place.
Play everything put yourself out of your comfort zone. What you gonna do if the dj before you plays something you don't? Also don't alienate your audience with your music choices.
Played a 180 BPM track at a party last Saturday. When down my list sorted by BPM and it had to be open format in that range. The crowd loved it.

That's a good approach, you've just got to be careful you don't end up annoying both sets of people!

"And sometimes, you just can't please everyone." Very true, well worth remembering

Awesome story, thanks for sharing your enthusiasm!

My view: Play what inspires you, forget genres.

Good to have you here for the replay.

We've actually interviewed Ferry Corsten 😀
A wild Laidback Luke appears!

11:57 I felt that sigh a million miles away, Phil 😂
Thanks for watching 😄
I specialize in old skool reggae from the mid 60s through to mid 2000s, love me old reggae, but I also play other genres if and when needed
Nice one !
Love that quote
Thanks for watching :)
If I've unlocked Serato Pro via hardware, can I plug in another piece of hardware to have it work? Or is it better to just purchase Serato Pro?
i would assume you could. Have you tried?
If you haven't bought a license then it will only work with hardware that unlocks Serato Pro

Glad you liked it 😊
I play dancehall, Reggae, Hip Hop and Rnb as my basis and to keep the vibe i throw in other genres.
Nice one!

Makes perfect sense Michael.

That's a cool way of looking at it

Be A Jack Of all trade.
Thanks for weighing in
Agreed with you Phill. Greetings from Croatia, Zagreb City. 😘
#DJLoREana 🎧
Thanks for watching
Here in New York, you better be a DJ that plays everything or you won't have a chance to get the gig.
I had to learn Latin Kompa. Soca. House r n b. And dance hall. As well as top 40s 😆
Versatility definitely helps with getting gigs
Well, i like to play as many genres, i would just like people to know me as an electronic music dj, not just a dj who plays a particular genre !
Nice one Paige
Jack of all genres here.
Nothing wrong with that!
Play everything put yourself out of your comfort zone. What you gonna do if the dj before you plays something you don't? Also don't alienate your audience with your music choices.
Good tips. Thanks Robert.
Wow how awesome would it be for Laidback Luke to just show up while you're streaming live.. Lolz...
Glad you liked it 😄
i cannot enjoy playing other genres i love to play house and techno music all the time !
Guess u be stuck in 1 area
Fair enough, nothing wrong with that as long as you're happy with the restrictions that places on you
idealis but wise..
Thanks for watching!
i am a confusion
Are you? Can we help with that? :)
My rules is to play almost everything. I do not play vulgarity, twangy country, and Drake.
Everyone has their limits 😄
Philip I thought you were on lock down
Not any more Sylvio (haven't been for weeks) - In Gibraltar
@@digitaldjtips I could swear you mentioned lock down where you were very recently.
djs should be able to do all genes of music
Thanks for weighing in Tony
LMAO
A master of one of course, not like Carl Cox
What genre do you play?
