CDT Thru Hike Ep 5: Pie Town to Grants - "My Volcanic Playground"

  • My Volcanic Playground - In this episode of my Continental Divide Trail Thru Hike Documentary, I hike from Pie Town to Grants. It's a 4 day, 108 mile hike with the highlight being El Malpais National Monument. It's a massive old lava flow. The Spanish explorers who first passed through the area walked around it, and called it El Malpais, "the badlands". A hostile terrain like no other, yet so interesting and alluring. Here, I discovered some lava tubes that I explored underground for a while. I also walked the rim of an old volcano with elk running around inside! There's also La Ventana natural arch which was pretty neat on it's own. This section is a great example of how you choose your own adventure on the CDT... seek out the cool stuff along the way, or take the easy way and road walk around it all. You can guess what I chose to do!

      Thank you! Looking back on the hike, I really enjoyed the early days when I wasn't so pressured to make it to Canada before winter sets in. I could stop what I was doing and explore for a while without feeling too guilty about eating up time, since I had so much left. Of course, that all changed closer to the end. And yes, the Toaster House is generally up there among a CDT hiker's favorite town stops I think. I was blown away the way that works, basically on the honor system. That would NOT work in Detroit!

    Wow, I just stumbled across your video. We purchased the Thomas Ranch, now called TLC Ranch. We still provide water, camping and most of the time a home cooked meal with the hikers. We are new to this area, thank you for showing me what is out here in our neck of the woods. This video made it fun following your adventure. Thank you for sharing it!

      I've heard the ranch changed hands, congrats on your purchase! It's really awesome that you guys are carrying on the tradition of helping CDT hikers. Folks like you make a lasting impression on us hikers... the kindness and generosity of people I met along the trail are some of the things I cherish most about the whole journey. So thank YOU for making the CDT the amazing experience that it is!

    Wow 17 lbs down by Pie Town and 90 miles of road walking in this section... crazy days. Good to know about the ice caves. Were the lava tubes and volcano rim on trail or a side trip?

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I was doing pretty good keeping my weight up until the Doc Campbell's to pie Town section. It was a long hike and I was rationing food by the end. But after this section my weight stabilized for much of the rest of the trail. Losing a ton of weight was one of my biggest "fears" before hiking the CDT. I once lost 15+ pounds in 7 days hiking a high route in the Wind River Range. I only brought 13 pounds of food, should have had 18+!
      The lava tubes are right along the actual CDT. However, it seems like few people hiked this section. The volcano was way off the actual CDT and is a route few hikers would take. But, there are other volcanoes along the actual CDT route in the Chain of Craters area. I didn't hike that section either but you can see them on the map. I can give you a more precise location of the tubes if you're interested.

    Just don't like the music all through the video. You do could cut it down by half - how about the sound of your foots steps or random bird sounds , even the wind ? This is a nice

    • @SeekingLost
      @SeekingLost  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey I appreciate your feedback! Honestly, the wind noise had a lot to do with my decision to go heavy on the music. It's almost always windy on the CDT, and I wasn't able to figure out a good mic setup with my gopro mounted on a gimbal before the hike so I just used the built in mic on the gopro.
      But the biggest issue from an editing standpoint is that often times, every other clip is silent and every other one is loud with wind noise. So it makes it hard to have extended scenes of nature noises, at least if you are trying to keep the clips in chronological order like I did.
