Not the most surprising - cisse was on fire, had some genuine talent in the team, Ben Arfa had the potential to tear apart a team, and the other teams in the tournament that season we faced were quite weak.
@@kaihiggins725 Then the same with Cabaye the next season. Didn't replace him properly until Jonjo Shelvey. So many mistakes in that era man. Any normal club would've held it together and finished 4th-9th for the next few years.

@@kaihiggins725 Pardew was definitely over-hated looking back. But winning 5 games in 10 months is unforgivable. He was finished by then and was pretty rubbish at Palace too, then his career just declined rapidly. He also made some of the worst excuses I’ve ever seen for losses in interviews
The win over the PSG last year in the first ever Champions League game I've attended was the best night of my life so far but will never forget being there for Cisse's header v Anzhi and second leg v Benfica even when we went out. Was a shocking domestic season for us but loved the Europa League adventure.
I remember watching first leg of the beneficial game being frustrated as hell. We were still very dangerous that season creating so much attacking but some of the goals we gave away from defensive mistakes were unforgivable (hence why we also battled relegation that season).
Remember this season like it was yesterday. So much bad luck (and some stupidity) in both legs of that Benfica tie, it could’ve ended so differently. Benfica made the final that year too. Rarely had it so good during my time going to games, I’d just started going before our previous European campaign (2006-07 UEFA Cup, we won the Intertoto Cup in qualifying that year), two of only 4 or 5 decent seasons in my 20l years going. After holding onto my season ticket through the years where many gave them up, getting to see those Champions League nights last season were quality! Hopefully more European nights to come!
Some absolutely dreadful defensive howlers in this video.... The one against Metalist and the mistakes in both legs against Benfica. And how was that not a penalty on Cisse in the 2nd leg against Benfica???
agree with the other guy, he had some good games but he was consistently mediocre throughout his career, had some bad injuries too - solid lad but never great but not as bad as some fans will make out
@@pauliewalnuts5803he really wasn’t at all 😂 the man just wasn’t backed. Wanted to sign Erikson, Vertongen & Lukaku but Mike Ashley wouldn’t even enter transfer negotiations for them

@8NEXTONE8 I know we didn't go down but we went from 5th to 16th in 1 season. We were crap and we were close to going down that season. We wasted such a good chance to build on the previous season.
It was only crap after we sold Ba. We were fine half way through the season a decent run from top half again. We sold Ba and basically played with no striker all season

10 years ago Newcastle surprisingly reached the quarter-finals in the Europa League. Let me know what team you want to see next 👇
Not the most surprising - cisse was on fire, had some genuine talent in the team, Ben Arfa had the potential to tear apart a team, and the other teams in the tournament that season we faced were quite weak.
@stuboy13 we should have been relegated that season and cisse couldn't stay onside to save his life for most of the season ! It really was a shock !
Wolves
Still amazed the ref doesn’t give a penalty
A video on that Stoke City team with Crouch, Diouf, Arnautovic, Moses, Bojan, and Nzonzi would be cool.
Yes 😍
We finished 16th in the league lost to liverpool 6 nil and the mackems 3 nil but still made the uel qf. Anything can happen with newcastle !
I hope Newcastle can reach the quarter final or maybe even advance further in this season’s Champions league
Cabaye, Tiote, Cisse, Ba, Ben arfa best players I've seen in a NUFC shirt
Ben arfa was a baller
Cabaye was hands down the best of that period , then Ben arfa and ba . Cisse was alright but not the best
Crazy how this team almost battled relegation and went to the quarters of the Europa League
Newcastle never do things the easy way that's for sure !
We were fine until we sold Ba & didn’t replace him

I remember this, think the games were on ITV4 the year Chelsea won the UEL
I went to every home game in that Europa League campaign. Was a nice bit of light during what was the dark days of Mike Ashley.
How this team was destroyed by Mike Ashley in such a short time still baffles me
I remember the atmosphere at sjp for the second leg qf…..special night… so unlucky! The noise in the last 20 minutes!!! Love the toon!! 🖤🤍
Still pisses me off we got robbed against Benfica. I reckon we would of made the final that year

Timmy timmy Krul, Timmy Krul. Adopted geordies the lot of you

That Anzhi team ♥
How do u get footage from so long ago in such good quality?
God I loved this team
In PL they fight against relegation that season😮

Robbed against Benfica at home!
Sylvain Marveaux was so underrated. Great player
Barely ever got a game
@@bailzzzzzz Yep, Pardew was reluctant to play him with Ben Arfa. Marveaux was technically very good
These highlights made obertan look good. But he wasn't.
@@Beattie755 Yeah, he had no footballing brain. Was just fast. Marveaux and Ben Arfa were a different class
@@DanielCordone9 sorry but I wouldn't put marvaux on the same page as Ben arfa.
cisse was good man
It cost us a place in the prem. Got relegated through injuries. Didnt have the squad to cope with europeon competition, same as now.
Do a Benfica one man
We should have beaten Benfica man. Who knows what could have happened after that
haha that kiss by pardew
Newcastle era smith given owen martins oh nostalgia epl
Please don’t mention Owen, we don’t like him
one of our worst teams, no thanks lol
Forget to name the season(12/13)
Ameobi looked great, did he dip after that? Plus, kinda weird seeing Carlos Bacca at Brugge
He had moments but very inconsistent. This was about as good as it got for him

Credit to Pardew tbh for making the most of Obertan, he was far from great but wow the speed
Same with Sissoko, pretty shit player really but looked unreal for us before bailing to COYS
No credit should be given to Pardew he was woeful

Absolute fluke we made it this far, our team was crap that season 😂

We really should have gone down that year. Loosing 6 nil to liverpool and 3 nil to the mackems what a joke we use to be !
