- In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Alex Harrison.
Born in Lincolnshire & spending his younger years finding trouble, Alex knew the Army was the way out of his hometown and bad habits. Knuckling down and joining his local Army Cadet Force, Alex went to the Army Careers Centre aged just 15 and a half. Joining the Grenadier Guards and completing the additional ceremonial taskings, Alex joined his battalion and began pre-deployment training for Iraq in 2006. His subsequent deployment to Afghanistan, attached to the Royal Anglians, is where Alex was injured in a Taliban ambush. Resulting in a .762 round through his temple, a grenade blast and a close call with another round, Alex managed to draw a map in the dirt for his unit to gain the advantage and eliminate the enemy fighters. Alex received a mention in Dispatches for his efforts, and made it back to the UK where he was rehabilitated, later losing his eye due to the damage sustained in the ambush. Alex is now a popular TikToker, is a host of The Bottom Third Podcast and is active in the veteran community.

What a shit hole
Resembles Afghan these days
Good to hear a podcast from a decent normal infantry soldier, who’s not a para or sas 🤣 seen blokes with injuries not recover mentally like he has so an amazing lad, nice to to hear story’s of kajaki as well, that’s where I did my tour and it’s not really talked about
Thank you for watching
Total respect from a former Scots guardsman.
Thanks for your support!
Much respect to Alex for getting out of the other side of a complete nightmare, yes, still damaged on many fronts, but he is still a great example of the resiliency of a serviceman, past or present.
One thing I want to highlight is that the military are in no hurry to cut you off from the full service pay, before the inevitable war pension, because it could put you up to a higher pension scale, because of 'Time Served Prior' to getting a medical discharge. Thanks for starting this channel mate, it is good for all of us former servicemen.
Thank you for watching
I served with Alex in 1GG. I had no idea he was injured in 2007 with the Royal Anglians. I stayed with battalion and was with 3coy. I am glad he is doing well.
Thank you for watching!
Followed Alex for a few years on TikTok. This is the first time I’ve seen him talking about everything in depth… unreal!!! What a bloke…

Another great guest and interview, you have a great approach to your interviews and guests, I love the way you respectfully ad the right level of humor to some dark situations, very unique.
Wow, thank you!
I've noticed this too. I've watched about ten episodes now and Phil always seems to know when to drop a little brightener into the conversation, really steers things well.
Massive tip of the hat to Alex in this episode as well. He reminds me a lot of a good friend of mine.
Great podcast keep them coming. 👌
A fellow Lincolnshire lad. Nice one. All the best to you, Alex. Cheers Phil.
Total love and respect! Great interview, Phil!

Been watching your vids for a week or so and am hugely impressed. Huge respect to all who come your show. I saw Phil at the war and peace show a few years back just gave a wave and got a hi back. Keep up you fantastic podcasts. Stay safe. REpect

Thank you Phil and Alex for a very good but very moving interview. Regards and respect to you both and for your service best wishes😊❤😊❤
Thank you for you service. It must of been absolutely horrendous & shocking to wake up in Birmingham I know im a Brumie
I remember Alex! He served with my neighbour ‘No Legs Nigel’ the tank driver from Leeds!! Really decent bloke and he stepped down when he knew was out of his depth with the Mexicans.
It's great to hear you have a connection to Alex! His experiences are truly inspiring and highlight the bravery of so many servicemen and women 💪🏼
Another brilliant debrief Phil, with Alex. I spent 30 yrs with the RAF, mostly Chinook, 10 yrs contracting on defence projects and now 4 yrs with the MOD as a Chief Engineer, so still supporting the cause. Great to hear these stories that would otherwise be lost. Fascinating, keep it up. Good luck to Alex.
Thank you for sharing!
Hay phill really enjoyed this , sounds like a good bloke . This tour there was a book written about called attack state red , maybe look into getting some of the blokes on who were in this . I came after this tour and was in on herrick 11
Excellent interview boys , I was in training around same time as this lad in AFC Harrogate 2004 /5 , but I was RGJ , my god the frustration of when he was explaining about when he got hit with his sarge bypassing the small compound without clearing wound me up so much , had that situation a few times myself as a rifleman but I'll say no more think we would be better off with just rifleman and junior n.c.o.s half of the times on tour lol , wish this lad all the best for the rest of his life , also you two bounced off one another great in this Phil 👍💪
So true, same can be said for fresh out of Sandhurst platoon commanders…. tactically clueless some of them (some being the problem, inconsistent pot luck ). I learnt most of the useful stuff from half screws
Great interview Phil Alex seems like a good lad, keep ‘em coming pal 💪🏼💯🇬🇧
Great interview. Phil’s a great bloke, really get’s the most out of his interviewees.
Thankyou lads very interesting really good 👍

Great interview lads, you pair of legends! All the very best Alex 👍

Lincolnshire lads always did make great unfanteers. I remember seeing and talking with the Old Contemptables' from WW1 as a kid. Grew fewer by the year.

Would you be able to get Chris Ryan or Andy mcnab on big man both together would be very interesting that bravo two zero book is my favourite war book of all time and lone survivor getting Marcus luttrell on would be amazing Phil x
My childhood friend served as butler at Buckingham Palace when Harry was a teen around 2001/2002 and he confirmed he was a proper lad then too, always partying.
