Why the Leica Lux App let me down

    Hi Robbie - I’m the founder of Fjorden (which @arminhirmer mentioned, and which was just acquired by Leica) and now also the Head of Product for Leica LUX!
    Just wanted to say that I appreciate your honest feedback. For what it’s worth, I think your example photos are great (beautiful composition and colours) - though, as you correctly point out, the digital bokeh rendered in the LUX app can’t match real Leica M-lenses! Sometimes, we get close (and we have many ideas in the pipeline for getting even closer), but ultimately, nothing beats the feeling of shooting with a real Leica.
    Our goal, though, is to give users the next best thing - photos as close to the unique Leica aesthetic as possible - if their real camera isn’t in reach.
    As for the manual control not being available in Aperture Mode: Unfortunately, that’s a limitation of the iPhone. It gives developers access to either a depth map, or manual controls and RAW files, but not both. Fingers crossed that changes at some point!
    Cheers,
    Victor

      Hi Victor,
      Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to respond! I really appreciate your insights and understand the challenges you face with the app. It's great to hear that you have many ideas in the pipeline to improve the digital bokeh and overall experience. I'm excited to see how the app evolves and gets even closer to that unique Leica aesthetic.
      I also apologize for not knowing about the limitations that the iPhone has, and I’ve updated my comments to reflect this. Your feedback means a lot, and I'm looking forward to future updates. Cheers!
      Best,
      Robbie

    To say that the app is not really like an M camera or feels like shooting with an M camera is kind of beyond ridiculous. Duh, wow how insightful. Waiting to see if the Fjorden addition to the IPhone will improve the experience. Never been a committed IPhone camera user but maybe it will get better over time. It is just brand new and probably has a lot of improvements coming over time

    • @robbiesumantri
      @robbiesumantri  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get where you’re coming from but the fact that the app is branded with Leica will invite a surprising amount of people to expect it to replicate shooting with an M camera.
      I’m sure improvements will come over time but I don’t think anything major will happen in the near future as a lot of it might depend on the hardware that Fjorden has no control over, the iphone itself. Although, I’m really hoping to be proven wrong. Again, I wanted to like the app. But it really felt terrible to me 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    I don’t think Leica really intended this to be like their cameras but just make it a bit more fun to shoot with your iPhone. I took the subscription for a month because the other features in the paid version make it fun. You can’t compare an iPhone to a real camera of this class anyway and can use other apps but because I only use my phone for social media the paid version is actually kind of fun to play around with especially because all the features are unlocked and when I get tired it I can always end the subscription and besides photography is just a hobby for me so I would never expect an iPhone to replace a very expensive camera but maybe instead it may interest those who never experienced the real Leica cameras may want to after trying out the app. Just my thoughts about it.

      Awesome that you like the app. Yeah and the app has very good filters and might encourage people to try their cameras. But, I also think that they are very aware the app suggests that it will come close to the real thing.

    Been playing with this for the free trial period and wonder how to access the manual controls mentioned in the Leica press release. Obviously, exposure comp is there but how about shutter / iso / and focus? The color profiles are OK, but the lens simulations are pretty rough. Hope they put a little more work into this or getting people to subscribe is a vain hope. Thanks for the review!

    I’ve been having a bit of fun with the free version of the app, but it’s simply just skins for an iPhone camera. And there’s not even a purchase option, they want you to subscribe every month. Not sure why the Germans have been on this path lately (BMW, merc, now Leica, etc) but not interested in this business model at all. Deleting this app later today and will use my actual Leica TL2 instead.

    So you don’t leica it, huh? It was oddly satisfying when you finally said the app is merely a ‘filter’ because that was my first thought when I saw your thumbnail. Bottom line, do we just skip the faux app and opt for the real deal?

    So you heavily process a file from an M but it’s not ok to use a “filter” for the Lux. Sounds like you’re an Elitist. I’ve got a Q myself, sorry for not having the “skills” to manual focus a M. If the app makes a Lux user happy, why not use a filter?

    • @robbiesumantri
      @robbiesumantri  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not just about using a filter. It would be great if the filters are done well. I think there's potential, but it can be so much better. The Leica Q is an awesome camera, mate. I may be a hipster but hardly an elitist.
      For me, it’s about ensuring that people who pay for the app get the best product possible. I have no problems with using filters like Dehancer, VSCO, and even some Instagram filters. The goal is always to provide value for money and to give users a product that meets their expectations especially when the intention of the app is to showcase what Leica is about.

    Well, let me say this about that...
    I suffered through your sneer because you have the real deal, and you dragged me in with your like-a joke; I was interested in your take.
    From the outset, I get that you are really ticked off that the default aperture wasn't to your liking.
    And yes, photo-genius, the app is really just a set of filters. As is life itself.
    Your true disgust how a $7 application doesn't approach the look and feel of a $6,000 camera is clear.
    And kind of weird.

    • @robbiesumantri
      @robbiesumantri  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for summarising the video 🤣🤣..
      So, what you’re saying is, the Leica logo does not even remotely intend to “suggest” to people that it will get you close to the look and feel of the real thing? To be fair, the leica looks bit is not terrible.
      I didn’t mind the default aperture and I said nothing about that. “aperture” mode is the one that you use to simulate the leica lenses and I was annoyed that it wasn’t the default mode.
      I’ll take weird if it means that I voice out my honest opinion instead of raving about something I don’t like.
      Thanks for stopping by.
