Steely Dan is such a tricky band to cover, not only because on their records they used assistance of 'creme de la creme' or lets say top of the line musicians but also because they often used very unusual harmonies and arrangements. To do SD cover, it is not enough just to learn song, you must re-create original musician's style and tricks, to be as close as possible with sounds and to catch the original groove at least 99%. Not an easy task even for pros. But, HSCC band passed this test like a hot knife through a butter. Well done!!!
I agree with your point. SD music is very complicated to reproduce. There are details even in the nuances. HSCC does a good attempt, but not quite there. Although enjoyable
@@sgtdarryldm I think we understood each other. "Not quite there" is fair remark, though I'll have to say my story. I tried few times to do covers of SD songs. We played it quite well if we talk about musicianship. Then comes problem of main singer(s) - Donald F is not F.Mercury but he has such a distinctive voice and pronunciation, if you try to imitate, sounds very bad. Then, back vocals, distinctive, precise. Who has such back vocals? Finally, sound of instrument is not just in instrument but in musicians's fingers. It is not an easy job to replicate Carlton, Lukather and Graydon (just for an example). Finally, production. Many decades after SD made those records they still sound magnificent, productionwise.
I'll try to move this to basketball court - imagine extremely talented kid who learned all M.Jordan's tricks. We're sitting, watch and enjoy, and say - Not quite there! :D Cheers, my friend :)
@@dejan.stankovic You are absolutely correct. I remember the days that SD was the standard you took the stereo shop when buying a sound system.
@@sgtdarryldm That's true, I believe many audiophiles even today still use SD records to test hi-fi equipment.
Lastly, let's not forget that we're talking about HSCC's live version of SD song here. Though it is polished to some extent, it's far away from conditions SD had in the studio these years, many tracks and takes, and also great musical producers. Let alone the fact that YT degrades sound on videos to some extent.

I grew up on 70's rock and it is so refreshing to know there are still people who can actually sing without computer assistance and actual musicians who can really play. You're true professionals and look like you're having so much fun playing for us. You have our attention HSCC! Keep 'em coming.
The concerns that people have today about the "authenticity" of music and talent were just as prominent in the 1970s. Music critics and writers were very harsh on bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc, due to their excessive use of electronics in their music production. They were often described as lacking the talent of a true musician. Autotune is just the newest version of this.

One thing that makes HSCC so great for me is that the recording is so good that I can play it over and over and listen to a different instrument or singer each time and actually hear them! Then I revel in the great musicianship and production that is the hallmark of HSCC while I listen to most of my favourite songs. André

I've watched so many Steely Dan cover bands. Some are good, some are terrible,. The background singers in this band are absolutely spot on. As good vocally and movement-wise as the originals. No over exaggeration. Perfect. Vocalist was excellent. Why aren't these people mega stars???

You guys are so tight. Remind me of American bands "Atlanta Rhythm Section" and "Toto". You have such a tight smooth sound with no gaps. The mix is right on. The back ups are awesome sounding like a one voice chord with such tight harmony's. I could listen to you guys and all your different performers all night. Oh yeah I do through your awesome videos. The main rhythm of this song has always been the bass... Constantine was perfect!! Jordan's vocals are always on point...The beautiful Melissa and Pina have that wonderful harmony that really made this song great!!! Great performance by all !!!!

IF there was any doubt as to the immense talent of HSCC (there wasn't), doing a bang up job of covering Steely Dan has removed all doubt. Fagan and Becker wrote THE MOST COMPLEX and ingenious music ever to hit popular radio. Where as most popular songs have fewer than ten chords on their chart, there are many, many Steely songs that have more than 40 different chords. HSCC is the REAL DEAL!! 👍👍🍻😎

Jordan has such a cutting gold voice. Can take over a song and own it. The backup vocals by the lovely Melissa and Pina perfect. Jacks sax sultry as ever. The band picture perfect. Not easy to do Steely Dan but you guys just own anything you want.

The 2 keyboard sound gives their tunes so much depth. Agree they aren’t noticed as they are providing rhythm only.

As a guitarist and drummer myself l thought Ok now HSCC are getting out of their depth if they want to to try and cover Hey 19.

One of the harder Steely Dan songs to cover - but for HSSC, just a walk in the park as usual !! I’ve come to expect nothing but absolute perfection from these guys n gals. 100% pure Aussie talent right there.

LOVE IT - the comment by Dejan below is right on as well. WISH WE HAD MORE LIKE THIS IN TODAY'S MUSIC. This hit was on their 1980 album "Gaucho". He's gotta' be one of the first of the smooth jazz in pop styles which was popular in the '90's. Always a fave style, as is HSCC for such a superb recreation of the song.

Wish they'd come here to play on stage for Sydneysiders. The live devotion, dedication, passion, details, expression and music arrangement is perfect, hypnotizing and awesome. I think they definitely perform better than the originals on stage. After all, live covers should recreate the same original mood that transports our memories and tingle our spine, my personal choice. HSCC is surely spot on. What incredible and amazing talents we have Downunder, Woah!
