I managed to tune up shop in Marietta on Clay Street just at the end of the runway when they were building these they go over and it would be like a total eclipse of the Sun I loved it
I was in Guam and a coworker & I watched a C-5M taxi in front of us. Super quiet! We didnt even realize that it had taken off...😂 China Airlines is a good airline. Flew an A340 from Okinawa thru Taiwan to Houston...great service. B777 will be the next great Boeing heavy now that B747 production stopped yesterday. B777...one of my favorite birds.
Had my first look at a C5A in June of 1970 at Charleston AFB. Amazing airplane. Can still remember the high pitch sound of the engines. My first flight was to Guam in 1972 in support of Operation Linebacker 2.
My dad worked at Lockheed in Marietta, GA., where they built the first C-5’s. We went to all of Lockheed’s Open houses once a year. The C-5 came over our house when it would take off and land. They are magnificent!!!!
I flew the C-5 for five years of my 27-year USAF career, but only flew the old A, B, and C models. The original TF-39 engines made such a distinct sound, and despite the problems, were a great powerplant. This new "Super Galaxy" is such a beaut....wish I could've flown it, as well.
When i was just a wee lad my mom would drive us kids out to denver i think maybe colorado dprings but think denver and we would watch the b-52's land and take off ! That was cool as heck !! That was in the mid to later 60's . I love military planes and there other stuff !!
My last flight as a C-5 flight engineer...SCM modded C-5 68216...LAX to Travis. That airplane , built in 1968 is now the world's oldest flying jumbo jet.
I put enough hours of my AF career just maintaining 8216. Interesting to have someone walking into that bird wanting to go into the pax section then finding out there is NO pax section!

Brings back some great memories. I've got 2500 hours in "FRED." I was at Travis AFB twice for a total of 6 years. Gulf War veteran, IP in both Aerial Refueling and Tactics. It flies like a much smaller airplane but taxies like a building with wings. Good times...especially the flyover at the White Sands Resort in Mombasa Kenya in 1994.
Loved fly on this AC. Flew from Ca to Saudi Arabia for gulf war on one. I find it amazing to watch as it takes off. You wonder how in the world did this massive airplane get off the ground. Worked the airfield in Somalia and was amazed each and ever time one of these landed and took off. A few AC left with extra holes in them!
This brings back lots of great memories for me. From riding on the C-5 to Northwest to United to Asiana to many others such as Air Berlin, Thai Airways, Cebu Pacific, and Malaysian. It used to be super cheap and easy to fly and travel all over the world for it was the golden age of jet travel from about 1990's to 2019 where costs and snafu's were kept at a bare minimum for most people. Man dreamed of powered flight for all of 5000 years and we got see and do it! I think that's so cool.
For me it was that 747. I rode one into Saigon, Vietnam on 23 April 1975, the last Pan-Am flight that started out as scheduled but became a Dept of State ordered rescue flight. Saigon fell severa days later. It was the only time I got to visit the send floor area.

It's a total rush listening to those engines spin up to full throttle, more so as a passenger and feeling the power lay you back in the seat. And to think, just over 100 years ago, this kind of travel was unheard of.
Sounds like fake news....had you actually been on one, you would know passengers sit facing the rear of the plane, so on takeoff you are not "laid back in the seat".
Were those the Jerry Lee Lewis engines that AF officers used to talk about how good the engines were but when they occasionally did fail it was "a whole lotta shakin goin on, Goodness gracious great balls of fire." 😂
I remember years ago when they closed Lockheed in Burbank, they used the C-5's to move equipment. It was amazing seeing such a huge plane on it's approach over Vanowen St.
I remember the C-5s flying into Burbank years ago for what we eventually learned was to pick up the F-117 and fly them to Nevada. I was surprised to learn they could use the shortish runways in Burbank and the C-141 couldn’t.
@@pdqkevin the 141 flew out of Van Nuys to Asia during the Vietnam war, the air demonstrations after desert storm at the Van Nuys airport were spectacular. Sonic booms, low flyovers at speed etc.
Great times flying it. Awesome plane that would take you to the other side of the world in a day...or two. Flew one trip where we flew east...and kept going that general direction until we got back to Dover almost two weeks later.
I flew in on as a kid.. At the time our fam always flew "space available".. That means we waited at March AFB and if there was an open seat, we could fly for free.. The seats faced backwards and there were hanging lightbulbs along the center... It was super cool and very dim inside.
I was on tdy and took C5 from Diego Garcia island to Clark Air force base in the Philippines, then took a civilian airline to New York, that was a great experienced riding such a humungous plane.

Amazing aircraft. In 1976-77 while serving as an Air Traffic Controller at MCAS Cherry Point, from the tower you could see the ramp/tarmac deflect under the weight of the aircraft as it taxied. I remain amazed how such huge and heavy aircraft are capable of flight. Mindboggling!
I started working on these massive C-5A Galaxy’s back in about 1971. They were, and still are an engineering marvel. A full tank of fuel was 312,000 pounds. The landing gear articulates to allow the huge jet to make tighter turns on the ground and landings during severe crosswinds. It’s hard to believe this cargo workhorse (or newer versions) have been flying for over 50 years.
Wow, last time I was in a C-5 was when I took a MAC flight back from Canada to Germany. Absolutely impressive plane, the size is incredible. We had several tanks and helicopters inside the plane. Only downside? As a passenger you face to rear of the plane. At least we did back in 1995. And really luxurious compared to a C-130.

I was stationed at Altus AFB in 68. General Whip Wilson flew the 1st C-5 from Lockheed to Altus just before Christmas. Lockheed had painted a Christmas wreath on both sides of the nose. He did a flyby about 50 feet above the runway, gear up. Quite a sight.
I like it when military markings reflect a geographical location, like their base. USAF do it, French so it as well altought trough code numbers markings.
I thought this was fake at first, because no one will ever convince me that big hunk of C-5 can actually fly. Have you ever actually seen one fly? No! But I've seen some of those other planes up close, and I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful collection. Thank you.

The first C-5 first flew over 50 years ago, a lot retired but the big boy is still flying with some of the old birds being upgraded to the current C-5M Super Galaxy!
Back in the 80s some genius thought it a good idea to do paratrooper testing with the C-5. I know this because my 1st Sgt in the 82nd airborne was a Ranger at the time. I don't recall how many were involved I just remember him talking about going out and the forcefullness of the parachute opening. A C-141 would be doing 130 knots or so. The C-5 was 200. That experiment was canned rather quickly.
KIND used to have a vantage point in between 23L R six stories up. It was paid parking but worth every minute of it. Then they tore down that terminal and now north off airport property is best for approach and departure but seeing good ground action is now impossible unless you are at the terminal. Nice shooting and great location for you!! I'd love to do this and provide a live feed everyday w ATC audio.
My husband worked on the c5 when we was on guam. If it wasn't kneeled when there it couldn't get back up ( broke). It is definitely a huge airplane. There was a full court basketball game played in it.
My Dad worked for Lockheed Marietta ga. for 30 yrs he worked on every C5 ever built when i see one good memories 1962 - 1992
I had the privilege of riding in a C5 on a hop from Japan to the states in 1978. It felt like riding on a magic carpet! A wonderful experience.

I think the upgraded engines have greatly changed the sound of the C-5, as evidenced in this video. So that distinctive high pitch sound is gone.

Really cool we use to go downstairs when empty and throw frisbees. Had to be world record for how fast a frisbee was going.

I can remember watching C-5's land at Moffett Field in Mountain View. They flew right over 101 and it was awesome!

I remember being a kid sitting across Hwy 41 from the end of the Dobbins Naval Air Station runway watching the first C5A taxi tests with my Dad.

That was a quick takeoff!! Must be light. Many pax aircraft use up more of the runway. Heavier loads FANTASTIC video!!

The C-5M is an awesome plane. The A & B variants are equally as awesome but sound way better with the GE TF-39 engines.

I’m from San Antonio and we have these big boys here at Lackland AFB. I can assure you they take to the air effortlessly

At 1:21 you can see it start to deploy it's cloaking device, and finally cloaks itself out completely by 1:38. Very nice. ;-)

Used to love seeing these all the time in Newburgh, NY. It’s amazing how little runway was required to take off - probably empty?

I have 2 parachute jumps out of a C-5A Galaxy while assigned to the 82d Airborne Division. It was an experience.
