The Super Cub is an excellent choice for hour-building in the South Island. I've been in London for 30 years, but back in my youth I used to fly the CAC's Super Cub, ZK-BNL on similar trips across the alps - great days - so enjoy it!
@@leonfenemor3050 I recall having BNL up at 10,500 ft above a pretty solid cloud deck flying Chch > Murchison (pre GPS). I estimated when I should be above Murchison, fortuitously found a hole in the clouds & did a spiral descent for an overhead rejoin of the circuit at Murchison. On another trip in BNL, I was returning to Chch, from Hokitika and as I was descending to the Canterbury plains down the eastern side of the main divide, the blackest Southernly Front imaginable was sweeping up the plains. I had to descend under this pitch black cloud deck which was so dark that the Tower sent an instructor out (in the days when the CAC was on the eastern side of the airport) to wing-walk me through the darkness across 02. Few place prepare you for dealing with rapidly changing weather & terrain like the South Island.
That was a great video and for a young man you have a playlist worthy of an old fart, like me, who is moving back to NZ and want to be doing exactly what you did. Back country flying in NZ is awesome Thanks
What a great first "Tour". That is such inspiring country; and you don't have to fly for a week just to reach the start! All the best for your planned aviation career... may you get weather like that whenever you fly! 😜 Liked & Subscribed.
Excellent flights from Nelson and return from several SI strips. Most impressed with Rakaia , Manuka Point Station also the private strip and Hut where you stayed. The Cub ERB performed well and your flying skills are superb.
Awesome video thanks. You picked the right weather window for sure! That's a wonderfully forgiving aircraft to gain hours on. P.S. love your playlist :)
Beautiful video! Keep it up! It brings back memories of when I traveled all across New Zealand in my camper. I'm considering going back next year to build my flight hours-I really miss the country. Greetings from the Netherlands, from a PPL student on the path to a commercial license!
Absolutely awesome loved this! Surely it must've been fairly tough to plan this from a weather perspective as the south island demands fairly nice weather for safe vfr flight? And also were you comfortable navigating, was it fairly easy to always fix your position in such a hilly environment? Just asking as I'd love to do something like this in the future.
Hello, We picked the most perfect 2 days weather wise. I used Oz Runways which has a GPS position which makes it much easier to navigate rather than using a map.
@craiglatimer3295 Thanks, you can start at any age but the youngest you can fly solo is 16. I'd recommend starting lesson a few months before his 16th birthday. See if you can get him into your local Aeroclub's Young eagle program.
@ thanks for the reply, he has done a U fly experience at the Otago Aero club where the pilot takes off and lands, and you do the flying, he loved it! (I did one too and really enjoyed it) I will get in contact with them 👍
Great trip in a Cub, good to see you got to stay at Don's hut at Manuka point.
Well done mate
Thanks!

Thanks, Yeah the Cub is such a cool plane to build hours in.

Wow what an adventure!
Nice strips I haven’t seen or been, thank you. Nice landings in your tail dragger ☝️

Would love to have met your "old" flight instructor. Great flying, Leon.
I loved this. You have great taste in your music. Your video was awesome. Good on you
@markelliott6112 Thanks Mark!
Great choice of music and not a single "selfie". Well done, mate! You are going to be a great airline pilot.
@paulsmith6184 Thanks mate!

Well done young man, proud of you.
Thanks!
Great video. I have done all those strips and more in a C180. Your timing is spot on to aim for a career in the airlines. Go for it lad.👍
@chriskiwi2601 Thank. I hope to get a C180 and C185 rating in the future, such awesome planes.
@leonfenemor3050 Yes a real plane!!
Loved it! Great soundtrack 👌
What an awesome watch lad!
Well done.

I enjoyed that ! Inspirational, well done. From a hang glider pilot. It was great seeing you land on all the airstrips including Murchison
@@davidmaule2045 Thank you
What a great trip. Good watch. Well done.
Stopping to milk some ridge or thermal lift in a cub, that's awesome! What a great flight
Nice video Leon.👍
Great concept. Please create more. Minor suggestions - voice over could be more to the front and transitions smoother. But very enjoyable concept.
Wow a great Grand Tour around SI
If only 😅

Love to know history of ZK ERB.
Yeah, Ira, it's a cool aircraft. It used to be a flat top sprayer back in the day.
Nice little production you’ve done there man. I love arm chair travel. Have you done gliding. Many thanks.
Thanks, I have not but I'd be keen too at some stage
now i've done my first ever south island flight i now need more
Very cool, my 13 year old wants to be a pilot, what age can you start learning?
