  • The first phylum within Spiralia that we will investigate is Platyhelminthes. These are the so-called flatworms. What are their characteristics? What are the clades within this phylum? Let's set ourselves up for a thorough investigation!

    Fun and educational, as always, Professor Dave! I giggled a bit at the notion of a "free living flat worm" when first mentioned. It brought to mind the notion that some flat worms might be falsely imprisoned for some reason.

    I love learning about these little duderinos and their amazing organs. Really helps you understand the complexity of ourselves with our fancy schmancy big city poop holes and one-way kidneys.

    Another excellent presentation. Please keep these coming (and go slow on the complex chemical reactions). Have followed and recommended your channel since the start and appreciate the improvements and the diversity. Thank you for restoring some faith in what TH-cam can be.

    Wow, I hadn't realized that so many flat worms were so beautiful. Many of these are as pretty as nudibranchs.

    Oh no professor Dave knows the power of the infinitely cuttable flatworm, now he is INVINCIBLE 🧬😂😂
    I just think it's kinda interesting that they have a Phyarnx and Pharyngoal cavity but evolution scrapped them of a circulatory system, always been fascinated by the flatworms

    Have you ever heard of Bogleech/ Jonathan Wojcik? I would love to see a biology team up to talk about worms. Plus his writing deserves a lot more eyes! He loves creepy crawlies more than anyone I have seen.

    Just wondering.......what and when was the last common ancestor of Chordates and Platyhelminthes? Similarities abound.
    Edit: according to the chart at the end, we're closer to Echinoderms. Wouldn't'a guessed that.

      correct, we're both deuterostomes and we have an endoskeleton. We'll get to them eventually, but there's a lot to explore before then

    Haven’t even watched this video yet but here’s a thought I had on the John just to give you all of the image.…
    If intelligent design is created using intelligence where did the intelligence come from?
    Like, Any human that designs anything intellectually had to gather their knowledge from external sources so where did God gather it’s knowledge from if it’s using intelligence to design things?

      There have been some adjustments to taxonomy in recent years due to the fact that we have more DNA evidence, however, that is nothing to get discouraged about. That doesn't mean that the framework that we got in high school/university was useless. Science is just discovering more and more all the time. So it's not "everything I learned in school was wrong" it's "we know even more stuff now, cool!"

    I just realized your cladogram is missing a phylum, that being Acanthocephala. Xenoturbillina and acoelomorpha, should really be shown on the cladogram as the phylum xenacoelomorpha, instead of xenacoelomorpha broken into its separate 'classes'. The phylum Acanthocephala, commonly known as spiny-headed worms, are from my research most closely related to the rotifers of the phylum rotifera and are are a sister taxa to that group. Which also means they are part of the spiralian clade called gnathifera, which I pronounce the g in it, because it is of Greek origin, and all letters in a Greek word are pronounced, with the greek for jaw being, γναθος. But the modern Greek is σαγόνι.

    • @billyr2904
      @billyr2904 ปีที่แล้ว

      @einmaniac I actually just found that out very recently, and I was a bit surprised that spiny-headed worms, aren't there own separate phylum.
