Let’s get up close and personal with the new Volkswagen ID5!
Mat’s got hold of Volkswagen’s new electric coupe SUV, and in this video he’s going to find out if it has what it takes to compete with cars such as the Kia EV6 and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
The ID5 is based on the Volkswagen ID4, and as a result they look identical at the front. It’s the rear end where things get interesting. You get a swoopy rear end, a spoiler and a full-width light bar. It looks more interesting than the ID4, however it still doesn’t look like £50,000 worth of SUV.
Step inside and you’ll find decent interior quality and plenty of cubby spaces. Passenger space is decent, despite the sloping roofline robbing a bit of rear headroom. While you do get a large infotainment screen, it’s a bit of a fiddle to use and overall the cabin isn’t as premium looking as the Kia EV6’s.
All ID5 models get a 77kWh battery pack with up to 316 miles of range. Motor-wise, you can have a single-motor rear-wheel-drive model with either 174hp or 204hp, then there’s the hot GTX model with dual motors, all-wheel-drive and 299hp.
The range kicks off at just under £50,000, however the car Mat has here will set you back close to £60,000. The question is, is it worth it? Stick with Mat to find out.

Brushless electric motors have been around for ages and aren’t that complex either. Also there’s no excuse for that interior for a car that’s 60k. This car is ok, there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s just too expensive for what if offers and looks like. Plus the performance is really anemic. Like I said why would anyone take this over a Tesla.

Look at his Peugeot 2008 review in 2020....Matt stated he got 47.1 MPG during the review. I have owned the same car for 3 years and it has averaged 33 mpg.
He DOES take bribes from manufacturers, and it is blatant. I will never trust any of his reviews....ever. Anything that is 'Go right ahead and buy it' is probably a fake review.
I test drove 5 cars and also the ID.4 and the ID5. When I drove the ID.5 it blew all the rest out of the water...it was the easiest and most comfortable car to drive, the driving position is high - as good as the Kia Sportage.
These Moto Journos are quite dim. If you spec and ID.4 up to the battery and trim of an ID.5....they cost the same. But these lazy journos just use the one copy and quite that.

I would say those door handles would be among the 5 things I hated about the ID4 - the button response is temperamental which drives you round the twist after a very short time. I rented an ID4 for a weekend about a month ago to drive my son to University. My son got so frustrated with it I thought he was going to try to rip the door off of it's hinges at one point (and we only rented the car for 3 days). The design of the interior door handles is also flawed. Somehow 3 of us managed to get the skin on our hands pinched by them on a few occasions while opening the doors. If it was just one of us, I wouldn't have thought anything about it, but 3 different people with 3 different hand sizes, screams that something isn't right. Otherwise, agree on the other points in the 5 things to hate - the touch sensitive buttons all over the place were a general annoyance, and borderline dangerous on the steering wheel. All in all, a bit of a shame really as it spoils an otherwise good car. I came away with a list of 6 or 7 regular irritations from the weekend (all of which seem to still be in place for the ID5) and went and tried the Skoda Enyaq 80x. Not one of the irritations could be found in the skoda - (mechanical operation door handles on the outside, physical buttons on the steering wheel etc.) - so I subsequently ordered one 🙂

Coincidentally, almost exactly TWICE the price of the new MG4EV, which has the same range, same motor power, and is a second faster 0-60. The MG4 also has a tiiiny instrument binnacle, but for half the price you just don't mind as much. Yes, the MG4 is smaller, and essentially made in China, but VW's styling department has really lost their way, and their design/engineering innovation from the past has gone missing. It might as well have been made in the far east too. VW must be absolutely raking in the profits from their EVs and the brand snobs who simply must have a VW.

I've come to appreciate the haptic buttons on the VW steering wheel. Their main advantage for me is swiping. You don’t need to look down or fidget when you swipe. Simplicity. It took me by surprise when I realized how swiping works on the steering wheel. It’s amazingly intuitive. When you need to adjust ACC cruising speed or sound volume or skip songs, you just swipe your thumbs across the middle of those panels , effortless - no need to look down or find the right buttons. It’s a pity those buttons are misunderstood. Coupled with VW's AR-HUD, I never need to take my eyes off the road.

I just checked it out in the showroom, its really unappealing. No clever touches at all. If feels like they’ve gone, how can we get a car out in half the time?

Complaining about the lack of a frunk/froot is a bit silly considering how snub-nosed the ID cars are. Rather than having a massive half-empty engine bay (and filling it with a tiny storage area not useful for more than cables) they made the front as short as possible, thus freeing up much more interior space. THIS is how EVs should be designed, they don't need ICE-sized fronts.

@carwow when doing brake tests, it really isn't helpful to see a shot of the interior of the car, or a shot of the front wheels of the car. Consumers want to see how the car handles hard braking. Does it have nose dive, does it skid and turn, does it plant itself well when braking hard. Would be much more useful to see an exterior shot of the entire car from the front /rear/side from the time brakes are applied to when it comes to a stop.

Nice to finally have a good old car review instead of the plethora of drag races and other stuff ... especially the car comparisons were so good, but are rarely done these days. I recently watched the 3series vs. C class vs. A4 and 5series vs. E class vs. A6 again. It would be time for updates of those since over the past few years several of these cars have been facelifted or replaced by new models. What would be really interesting would be comparing the PHEV versions of these cars since for the main target group (company car drivers) those are among the most relevant models these days.

01:14 Sorry, Matt. Looks disgusting as a convertible... well, more so.
    You're a mad lad, Matt. That's why I follow.

This is one of the worst looking electric vehicle I’ve ever seen. Considering that I love VW golf, polo, T-Roc… what is this fat, chunky, goofy car? This reminds me of an overweight golf. Come on VW, look at the competition: IONIQ 5, Tesla model 3 and Y, Skoda Enyaq; all cheaper or comparable options way better looking. So fucking disappointed my lord.

Strikes me so deep about being the past owner of a 1998 Passat Estate with its beautifullly blue backlighted dials and red needles and red buttons in a very well built interior, with one of the best aircons in the industry back then... and now this ID range infotainment system that doesn't even has backlight in the buttons and feels made out of plastics that came out of the cheapest chinese store in the neighbourhood... really gets the "WTF were they thinking" award. And can someone call this "evolution"?

Could we have a horn test in each review please Mat? I feel it’s really important in buying a car!

I know EV’s are getting better and better with quality and range but I do feel as though VW are getting a raw deal with all the negativity towards the ID range. Most buyers have families and aren’t spending time scratching the interiors of their cars!! Those “scratchy plastics” are hardwearing and if you have small kids - or grandkids, they’re actually really easy to wipe down and keep clean.

Q5 has the same deep door pockets and items get stuck in there. I store an umbrella in mine on one side, and yellow vests in the other.
